Cover Gir was tucked in September 13, 2008 at Angel's Rest amid the other angels from the Greaty Kitty Rescue 2007.

And if you again hear suffering, the anguished cries

Pictured is Sheila Smith who opened her heart and home to this "feral" warrior princiess of a cat. But with Sheila's special methods of helping frightened cats, Cover Girl was able to overcome her fears and learn to relish being petted and having the best spot on Sheila and Dr. Roy's bed.

Cover Girl's Legacy

Cover Girl’s mission
both life and death
to draw
and notice to
abuse and hoarding.

She was the face of Best Friends Animal Society’s

One of almost 800 cats
sick, starving, neglected in the Nevada desert,
Cover Girl’s image
inspired people to save these orphans.

If her life story saves one animal
from the clutches of abuse,
then her legacy of hope
will prevail.

I've looked at these photos over and over. I've read every word, counted the pebbles and put Cover Girl's face on my desk top hoping that I could bring myself to write a few words.

As I read the comments I know that I am not alone with my sadness and my inability to hold back the tears.

Cover Girl is more than a cat.

Here are a few of the many memories that this day at Angels Rest brings to mind.

The days Before Best Friends when Cheryl and I cried as we helped one cat at a time, crying, yelling at Maggie and praying for Best Friends to come.

Watching the first truck unload.

Meeting Russ for the first time.

Billy and her mom, the first volunteers coming to help.

There were the early days when Michelle helped Sherry and Mackenzie with intake.

The day I realized that the cat in the hospital was the cat Troy took a photo of, Cover Girl. I went and got Mackenzie and showed her the cat and the photo!

The day Barbara was putting up shade for the kitties and saw me crying and gently asked if I might want to get out of the heat.

People from Las Vegas making the drive over and over to help.

Volunteers from far away making the desert their home to care for the kitties.

My total amazement at what a wonderful organization Best Friends is and how each and every cat was special.

The evolution of the rescue from cats running free to all in cabins.

The big sign at the Nugget that said "Cat Adoption" was the day I felt I had made a difference. I wished I could have had my mom with me to hug.

So many cats and so many people to help them. Everyone made a difference in the lives of the Pahrump kitties.

Cover Girl's story was read by all of us. Shadow Cats was put on the map.

The day before Cover Girl crossed I looked at her new video and marveled at how much she was loving to be loved.

Shelia wrote:
She enjoyed the petting and strokes of not just her immediate family but also the ShadowCats volunteers who came on a regular basis. She also knew she had an extended national family that loved her dearly as this was part of our everyday conversations.

I would ask her, “Do you know who loves you baby girl? She would look at me with clear, soft eyes. “The whole world,” I would tell her.

Cover Girl our Warrior Princess I will always remember you and all who paid the price.
