Anatomy of a Rescue, Part 2
A look back at one of the largest cat rescues in history

By Sandy Miller, Best Friends staff

This is a continuation of Anatomy of a Rescue – Part I, which chronicles Best Friends’ rescue of over 800 animals from For the Love of Cats and Kittens (FLOCK), a nonprofit organization in Pahrump, Nevada.

It takes a village
Jerry and Linda Bell lived just two miles away from the FLOCK property, but they didn’t even know it existed until they saw a story about the rescue on the evening news.

“There’s no reason to be on that street,” Jerry says. “The property had a solid fence around it and no one driving by would have any idea.”

Jerry and Linda headed over to the rescue site the next morning.

“We looked around and were completely overwhelmed by the magnitude of the situation,” Jerry says. “How could anyone get a handle on this?”

They asked Patti Lindh, who was coordinating volunteers, how they could help. She handed them some rakes, pails and large trash bags so they could help clean the yard, which at that time was one big toxic litter box. Jerry and Linda came out most every day to the rescue site, helping out wherever needed. Jerry would often make two trips a day to Las Vegas to take cats to veterinary appointments. Linda brought home cooked meals for the rescue crew. They ended up adopting four of the Pahrump cats.

Jerry and Linda are just two of more than 500 volunteers from 27 states and two Canadian provinces who came out to help at the rescue site between July 2007 and January 2008. Some canceled summer vacations and drove thousands of miles to scrub out cat boxes in 115-degree heat, all for the love of cats.

Another 100 volunteers helped out at adoption events, which casinos in Pahrump and Las Vegas kindly offered space for. There are the local veterinarians who offered their services, and the people who dropped by the site every day with loads of cat litter, cat food and other supplies. Best Friends volunteers, members and others also opened their wallets. The overall cost of the Great Kitty Rescue as of April was between $500,000 and $600,000, and donations, both cash and in-kind, stood at $338,000.

All those who helped in this rescue should know that every time they read a story or see a photo of a Pahrump cat doing so well today, that they played a big part in that.

Going home
It was the evening of Sept. 17 and Juliette Watt, Best Friends’ resident pilot, eased the single-engine, four-seater Mooney Encore down on the runway of an airport just outside of Austin, Texas. She and Elissa Jones, manager of Best Friends’ Guardian Angel program program, were carrying some precious cargo – eight feline leukemia positive cats, including Cover Girl.

Smith was there to greet them. They began unloading the cat carriers and putting them in Smith’s SUV. Smith looked into the carrier that held Cover Girl.

“I just looked at her and said, ‘There’s my baby,’” Smith says.

Shadow Cats is part of Smith’s home, which she shares with her husband, Roy, a veterinarian with his own practice, and usually between 50 and 75 cats. It’s an amazing place, with beautiful, spacious living areas for the cats, including enclosed outdoor areas.

For all the poorly-run FLOCKs in the world, there are thousands of people out there like Smith who are running wonderful rescue organizations. They have adequate space for the animals and enough volunteers to help care for them. And they have open door policies, which Smith says all organizations should have “because it keeps you honest.”

“When there is secrecy, they set themselves up for getting in over their heads,” Smith says.

Smith would later take in nine more Pahrump cats.

“We need more Sheilas in the world to make it a better place for all of us,” Watt says.

Saying goodbye
The rescue site officially closed down in early February and the remaining cats came back to Best Friends. Thayer says one of the last things she saw was a Nye County animal control officer putting chains and a padlock on the FLOCK property. That felt good.

Many of the cats have since found forever homes or have been placed with other rescue organizations. Others still reside at Best Friends where Woodard and other staff and volunteers continue to work with them in the hope that they, too, will one day find forever homes. The rescue continues.

(Snow, shown to the left, is still available for adoption along with many of his friends at Miss Kittys in the Rescue Village.)

The executive board of FLOCK is now facing 17 Nye County charges relating to animal neglect and one charge of further engaging in acts of animal cruelty in what is considered to be one of the largest cases of institutional hoarding in U.S. history. Best Friends attorney Russ Mead worked closely with Nye County officials in preparing the case against FLOCK.

“As far as we have been able to determine, this is one of the few if not the only time an organization has been charged with animal cruelty,” Mead said after the charges were filed in June. “One of the lessons from this animal hoarding case is that we all need to be vigilant about the animal welfare and animal rescue organizations we support. The horrible aspect of this crime is it was done systematically to such a large number of cats by people hiding under the umbrella of a nonprofit.”

Former FLOCK president Sheri Allen, who was not charged in the FLOCK case, pleaded not guilty to 13 counts of animal cruelty and neglect charges in a separate hoarding situation involving more than 100 animals at her own home (those animals were also placed in the care of Best Friends). She agreed to plead guilty to one misdemeanor charge related to animal cruelty and neglect in exchange for a suspended 30-day jail sentence and 40 hours of community service. Her home is also subject to random inspections by Nye County Animal Control.

Best Friends volunteers and staff recently gathered at Angel’s Rest to pay tribute to the 80 Pahrump cats who crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. The moving memorial reunited many of those who had given so much of their time, and their hearts, to this rescue.

A recent visit to Rescue Village found Jinx, the former lunger, enjoying some petting from caregiver C.C. Gonzales. And Licorice, who’d once been so traumatized he couldn’t even be around other cats, was sleeping peacefully in a cozy bed surrounded by other snoozing felines.

Meanwhile over in Texas, it’s hard to believe Cover Girl (shown to the right) is the same cat in that photo Snow took at the beginning of the rescue. She tips the scales at a healthy 8 ½ pounds now, more than double what she weighed when Snow captured those first photos. She enjoys tossing her toy mice in the air and stretching out in the sun. She’s learned how to be a cat again.

“She has the time and the energy to think about something other than just surviving,” Smith says. “She’s never going to be a lap cat, but she’s become a cat who’s comfortable around people.”

Never say never. One recent morning, Smith woke up to find Cover Girl curled up on the end of her bed, off in dreamland. She swears she heard her snoring.

Addendum: We are sad to note that Cover Girl crossed the Rainbow Bridge the morning of Monday, August 18, 2008. Smith noted, “I am so sorry that she did not have a long life here with us and that we weren’t able to keep her from this end, but I AM so very grateful for the time we had with her (it would have been a year Sept 17th) and knowing that before she left this world, she knew not just the depravity of man, but also the kindness and love from so many. She was able to develop trust and to feel safe. She absolutely and beyond any doubt knew she was adored by thousands of people from all over the US - because I told her so every day.”

Cover Girl is scheduled to be placed at Angels Rest on Saturday, September 13. All those who have learned to love and admire her courageous spirit are welcome to attend her memorial service.

I am but one piece of the chain. So many people involved. For example, Jerry and Linda drove nonstop from Pahrump to Austin to deliver the second group of cats and turned around the next day and drove back. Amazing. All the people on the front lines and behind the scenes that made things happen and the continuous legal pressure that is being exerted to extract some kind of justice for the animals. I just happen to get a little recognition b/c I am riding the coat tails of a very famous cat that put her face to the GKR. I never for a second forget it is ALL about the cats.

And yes, I honestly believe Cover Girl WAS snoring!- the little scamp!!

You forgot to mention, Best Friends total income for 2007 was over 35 MILLION.

Posted 8 Sep 2008 5:46 PM by hugecatlover
snooper, it wouldn't matter if Best Friends made 100 million because it is us the people that CARE that donate to them and it is Best Friends that CARE for the animals that people like YOU don't take care of. So I say mind your own busness because yours time is coming, maybe it will be hell but I know for a fact that Best Friends and all the people that put their time in and care for the animals of this world WILL be in a much better place than you. Do you think it takes no money to care for and feed and house all the animals that they care for?? I hope you sleep well at night.

Obviously, this was accidently deleted by BF so I'll repeat the information.
When FLOCK was first taken over several cats (at least 7) were given to Lynda Rhodes. She is NOT a rescue, not an animal sanctuary nor actively involved with any animal groups. She IS owner of Rhodes Ranch. A Pahrump RV park. August 19th Nye County officials raided the property, evicted then tenants and condemned the 15 trailers that she rented to people. My question-BF says they inspect the property and make sure the kitties receive proper care. They were turned loose, with no inside enclosures, a person with very limited funds for their care, and not even a valid business license. This is not my idea of a proper forever home. I have no idea what happened to these unfortunate cats, but I doubt it has a happy ending. So much for BF going the extra mile in this instance.

And hugecatlover:
BF has some wonderful dedicated volunteers. But the volunteers don't decide how the money is spent. In the past 3 years BF has collected 97 million dollars There should be no over-population problem, and no homeless pets.

martinscrew, you are right about ONE thing and that is Best Friends has wonderful volunteers, but if you think all it takes is the volunteers to take care of the animals you really are living in a dream world. It cost money to FEED, SHELTER, GIVE MEDICAL CARE, ETC. If it wasn't for places and people like Best Friend this world would be so much worse off. It is people like you that just DON'T GET IT. So as I said to snooper it is NOT your business, we that CHOOSE to donate. Best Friends doesn't take our money from us WE give it FREE WILL. I also hope you sleep well at night.

This is not the time or place to be distracted by the static that these people are trying so desperately to generate.
Some people cannot survive without feeding off of this type of rancor and their own internal hatred.
The only thing I care about is being with the people that mean so much in my life. The people that share my love for CoverGirl and the message she left for all of us.
Love and kindness to animals will always make the world a better place for all of us.
I will not be distracted from my commitment to Cover Girl's life lessons for us all.
She lived a life that taught us all that love can turn around the heart of the most miserable souls. And she has asked us to take this lesson with us when we meet people like these. There is good in every living being. You just have to look for it and be able to sort the wheat from the chaff.

You are right mlayton2, it is hard not to respond to these people that don't get it. So found now on I won't give them a second thought.

I know that seeing all of the big-hearted people that responded to help all these kitties from this man-made disaster helped to renew my faith in people.

I recently made my first visit to BF. I hope it won't be my last. When I first heard about all the wonderful things BF does I had a momentary, "to good to be true" thought, but after watching them save over 6,000 animals after Katrina, take in 22 Vick dogs, help that enormous amount of cats from Nye County, and visiting the sanctuary, every bit of it is true. I've met the most dedicated animal lovers and I'm grateful that this group of friends decided to do something about the issues animals face.

They really, truly never give up on an animal if they believe there's quality of life. They fly minature horses to Oregon for surgery and ship horses to Wyoming for prosthetic limbs. They make huge efforts to get animals to other towns for adoptions. It is truly all about the animals.

With what I have read and heard and now seen with my own eyes, I will believe in this organization always.

BF has given me back faith in humans. There are people who truly care for animals and thanks to BF, we are finding each other whether we're in the US or some far off town in another country.

Well, not a second thought ....

What about when I was being fried on blog and blog after blog on this website.

What is even more entertaining, is now you, those who were riding on that "slam Sheri Allen" bandwagon are now saying "I won't give them (her) a second thought.

Well, maybe you should have thought about that when I was unable to respond and was pretty much defenseless against the vile statements being made in this web site.

My sole goal in life now is to put the TRUTH out there about this organization.

There will be much more coming in the next few weeks, Stay tuned.

B - bye

well, i must say after reading the blogs and keeping my mouth closed for years i have to speak.
Sherri Allen is 100% GUILTY of everything she was accused of. It shames me that the system does not look deeper into what really transpires at the Pet Crematory Sherri Allen runs and how she hoards animals,I am an ex employee. i KNOW of HUNDREDS of beloved pets buried on her 5 acre property that she told the owners were cremated, look into the dirt and you will see thousands of bones from animals not "cooked"because of propane costs.she hoards everything from 25 pot belly pigs to horses,in her house there was long dead starved cats trapped in the walls. In one very small room in the prep area there was HUNDREDS of guinea pigs, hamsters ,mice living on MOUNDS of knee deep poop. The bone room where the remains are treated was so full of feces and hamsters they clung onto your shoe laces while you grinded up the bones.Sherrie is 100% guilty. She has a mental disorder and should be shut down. I cried many times for the lost animals that were just buried on the property. The dogs that were left in that back of the trucks that pick them up from the vet hospitals in a frozen state many MANY times were left i the trucks in 100+ temperatures until the next work day and the smell was and IS aweful come mondays the trucks filled with bodily fluids- I repeatedly called the local television stations and no one would persue it.The rotten flesh of your beloved animals sent to her for cremation is a sin. But after reading her "sardonic"remarks again i just had to speak out. Sherri you will pay your price when you meet the Lord, i hope someone will go to your property and dig in random places for the bones of their beloved animals,Sherri goes months without showering, the animals are neglected and i am sick of hearing how bad you have it. You are a truely evil person faking us all out.
now maybe you will worry about the rest of us employees speaking out. Its over Sherri

Gee truthteller this is very interesting. Tell us when you worked there. Did you know Tim and Josh?

Posted 14 Jan 2009 10:31 AM by truthteller
its nice to see there are still people that read this blog.i have had many try to get me to say when I worked at Sherris pet crematory to find out more info. Please, im not stupid-how do i know if the messages arent from Sherri? you see there are many of us that have come and gone from her place of work and there are some in fear of their job everyday because they need to eat. They-we- and the rest have had to keep our mouths shut so we can pay the rent.I vented because the facts need to be known.I will not give out the many names that will convict her unless its to the law.But i say again, she is guilty, she harms animals, hoards animals
and takes advantage of the hundreds of people that send their beloved animals to her for cremation. Most end up in the dumpster without being properly cared for.Its very sad seeing body fluids of your long time per leaking out of the back of the trucks because the storage freezers are full and she cares less.Ribbons, notes, etc on the pets-one last word from their owners in their time of grief...matted with the fluids the words unreadable the love and life gone from the cold dead eyes of beloved partner.THEY ARE BURIED IN HER 5 ACRE LOT! go check for bones! you will find them. Im done here. only the Law will we talk to.

Posted 14 Jan 2009 11:55 AM by Justice4Cats
WOW! I have always wondered about her business practices. I know from talking to Tim, Josh and Jessie who worked for her that they do live in fear of her. The pay check to live on is most important.

What happen to all the dead FLOCK cats? Taken off to the dump!

What government agency is in charge of licensing pet crematories?
