Wish List for Miss Sherry's Finishing School for Felines
If there are some "Whiskers Wizards" out there or "Feline Fairies" with extra wands laying around, boy would we love to talk to you.

The kitty attendees at Miss Sherry's Finishing School for Felines at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary are making fabulous progress with being offered baby food and then touches with wands and we will be having a series of classes, which means right now there is no such thing as too many wands.

We are using some different types of wands and cats being cats, they all have their personal preferences.

The cloth wand was made by taking a dangling cloth toy and wrapping it around the plastic stick numerous times and then taping it.

The feather wand is the most narrow wand we have. The feather portion is approx 11 inches long, and the handle is another 10 inches long.

The diameter is approx 4 to 4 ½ in – which makes it less frightening than other wands with a larger width. So far we haven't been able to find this baby online, so if anyone has parrots or feathered farm friends who have molted out feathers they are willing to donate to the cats and you are a crafter, consider this a project challenge.

It appears that the cats are sensitive to colors. We have bright blue, which they do not seem to like, yet light brown and lighter colors seem fine.

We are looking for plain long plastic wands as well that we can dip into baby food and wash off after use.

And we have one long wand that has bristly brushes, like the biggest bottle cleaner in the world and some of the cats really like that one too.

Other wish list items

Clorox wipes
Paper towels
Sturdy garbage bags
Baby food (turkey & chicken)
Little blankets that will fit the adoption cages
Soft catnip toys for inside the cages
Dangling toys for inside the cages

We just got back from five wonderful days volunteering at the finishing school. It was the most amazing experience - I encourage anyone to go and volunteer.

I found the best response with the cloth wands Terri made and the refrigerator cleaning brushes - the cats (once they let you) love the brushing. I didn't have as good a response from the feathers, many of the cats didn't seem to like them.

By the way, on my last day there, I was petting Dolly and Dweezil pushed in and lay across my arm to ask for more pets - I had just pet him. He has made tremendous progress. And he is not alone - go see for yourself!

Re: plain wands on wish list. The wand used to adjust mini-blinds looks like it might be a good option *if* a source of wands (without mini-blinds) can be found. I looked for these at a large, chain hardware store in Austin yesterday. No separate wands available. I'll do a little more research.

Check out:

www.dollardays.com

do a search for wand, they have several wand, cat toys, would these work? And, they are a wholesaler, so the prices are very good!

Yes, the wands would work! Thank you.
We are using some wands as an extention to feed baby food. We are using other wands as soft touching/petting surfaces. (So far we have been wrapping the dangling cloth into a ball and taping it in place) We are still experimenting with different types of feather and cloth wands, so as long as they are not too scarey or too large we would love to give them a try. We need numerous shapes and sizes. Thanks again for everyone's help!

If anyone can make blankets for the cages, we have two cage sizes: 18" wide x 24" long and 19" wide x 30" long. Also, we can use larger ones and fold them to fit.

I "Googled" mini blind wands and found a few sites. I e-mailed Levelor and a couple of others asking for donations or quantity discounts. Levelor is sending me 20 of varying sizes. Hoping they arrive before I leave for Kanab next Monday so I can bring them with me!

Way to go, Lora 726! Please post and let us know how everyone is doing when you get to Kanab!

For those who have [discount store] Big Lots!, I found fleece baby blankets for $5; four of these are now on their way to Miss Sherry's. Also a few wands and toys.

I've got lots of soft material from which I could make blankets. How thick should they be, i.e., poly batting or double thickness fabric? I'm sure you prefer cotton, flannel, sweatshirt/blanket fleece, and other washable fabrics.

rootlady, you have the right idea! Any and all of those ideas would work.

The long "bristley wand" you mention sounds like a brush that you can buy to clean clothes dryer vents.

My mother cut up a thick flannel sheet and made double thickness blankets for the kitties, which I'll be mailing of to you soon. More to come after that, as long as you continue to need them.

I don't know how BF feels about it, but at the shelter where I volunteer, my favorite cat beds/pads are made of double or maybe even quadruple thickness Polartech-type polyester fleece - the beds are about 1/2" thick.

The reason I like that material, is that the cats sometimes spill their water, and the Polartech wicks it away from them, so that if no one notices, they're not having to lie on a wet bed. The ones with cotton in them get wet or damp, depending on how much water has been spilled.
