Pahrump to Phoenix to Parents: Adoption event Jan. 18-20
In just a short time, 75 of the cats who are walking miracles will be cruising down the highway to Phoenix, in search of happy endings in homes of their own.
Pictured above is Zappa. Zappa is a truly wonderful and sweet boy. Until a week ago, he was so shy and you couldn't even touch him. One day HE suddenly decided that he likes people again and since then he has started to rub around legs and he cuddles and purrs and can even be picked up. Zappa's story is a true miracle and he now wants a wonderful loving home.

So, where do these cats come from, what makes them so remarkable and why do they need the best of the best cat moms and dads?
This is probably the single largest cat rescue in history. Some 800 cats were trapped in institutional hoarding in the Nevada desert. More than 700 were starving and sick at a compound. They were roaming freely over the grounds, terrified, hiding in bushes and under trees, running in fear when people approached. Many had severe medical conditions that required additional care. In addition, there were also more than 100 cats who were suffering in the home of a hoarder and these were seized as well and turned over to Best Friends for care.
All these cats were underfed, underloved, frightened, neglected and sick. Best Friends promised to help them and make life better for them. That meant doing everything possible to get them ready for new, loving homes.
Through the heroic efforts of the Best Friends team and valiant volunteers, most of the cats have recovered in body and spirit. They are already in loving homes or with exceptional rescue groups across the United States and Canada.
Still, Best Friends had several special cats who needed extra TLC before they were ready to go home. Repeatedly, cats who at first appeared to be fierce ferals or completely unsocialized have been able to work through their fears and show us that they were housecats once upon a time.
Many of the cats going on this mobile adoption event are in search of very special families that can make the lifetime commitment of love and time to help them finish the journey back to being family members.
“We are in urgent need of people who are willing to make the serious commitment it will take to help these cats who have suffered so much,” said Danielle Aymar, Best Friends adoption manager.
Now, there will also be some over-the-top friendly cats at this mobile adoption event who just need a place to unpack their catnip. We'll even let you guess which ones were always friendly and which ones have "melted" in the Shy Cat Social Club.
The cats will be traveling in style in a climate-controlled truck. Potential adopters and well-wishers will be invited up into the truck for introductions to these special cats. There will be portable “meet-n-greet” rooms where families and cats can get to know each other comfortably.
“Thanks to an outpouring of donations and volunteers, Best Friends has been able to make major improvements in the health and well-being of these cats,” Danielle said. “But now the cats we still are caring for are going to need families who can understand and work with their special needs. In other words, we need the biggest hearts in America.”
