She must be Cinderella
Cover Girl and friends going home to people with hearts as big as Texas
How do we know Cover Girl is Cinderella? Because she will soon be heading to a palace in Texas, with a couple of other feline-leukemia positive cats, from the Nye County Cat Rescue.

For those who don’t already know her story, Cover Girl was a painfully emaciated and sick little girl when Best Friends rapid response team first arrived in Pahrump, Nevada. Best Friends had been called to the F.L.O.C.K facility, which was supposed to be a sanctuary, but had turned into a hellish concentration camp where many cats were diseased and starving. Nye County Animal Control seized the 400-plus cats and asked Best Friends to come in immediately to make life better for them.
The heart-breaking image of Cover Girl struggling to stay on her feet and walking away from the camera immediately became THE image of the rescue.
The Best Friends team discovered Cover Girl was a feral among ferals, a brave-hearted warrior princess who would not give an inch, not even on the verge of death, not even to overt human kindness. Then we discovered she was feline leukemia positive, had skin cancer, and other insults to a warrior princess’ dignity such as ringworm. .
Everyone was fighting for her life so hard, but what could the future hold for Cover Girl. How were we ever going to find a home for her? No worries, her home found her off the Nye County Cat Rescue site.
The Texas cat palace Cover Girl and her friends Frogger and Salty are heading too also is the home of Sheila Smith and her husband (who just happens to be a vet and owns his own cat hospital) Dr. Roy Brenton Smith. In addition to having built the feline Taj Mahal for their own 67 cats, Sheila and Dr. Roy also oversee Shadow Cats www.shadowcats.net, an organization dedicated to feral cats. Shadow Cats believes that feral cats have a right to live in the environment and they are committed to trap-neuter-return-maintain to humanely manage their numbers.
One of the Shadow Cats volunteers, Susan Dubose, sent Sheila the link to the Nye County Cat Rescue. She saw Cover Girl’s photo and it took her breath away.
“I initially thought I would sponsor her, but then when I found out she had leukemia. I thought, ‘How many people are set up to care for cats like this?’ I didn’t think many. So I thought if anyone was coming this way and could escort her...And Danielle Aymar (Best Friends adoption manager) and I got to talking about options...and here we are today!
“I had no idea what her name was or that she was the Cover Girl of this rescue and that so many people were concerned about her. All I knew initially was there was a cat in such obvious distress and I responded to that. Your photographers shoot from the heart don’t they?”
And Sheila and Dr. Roy live from the heart.
Sheila is a registered nurse, so she has a special place in her soul for the most needy, human or animal, like feline leukemia cats rescued from hell in the desert. Since Dr. Roy founded and operates Central Texas Cat Hospital, their cats’ medical needs are definitely attended too. His motto is “Real Men Love Cats.”

Shadow Cats used to operate a shelter in addition to the TNRM program. But the Smiths had to make the painful decision to close the shelter because people kept dumping cats and kittens there and it got beyond what they could commit to doing. So the highly adoptable cats went into foster care and are actively being promoted for adoption. The ferals, seniors, feline leukemia, and other cats with medical problems who could not easily be adopted were integrated into the Smith’s household.
So Sheila and Dr. Roy were uniquely qualified to offer Cover Girl a home. And listen to what life will be like for this feisty feral and her friends:
“They will have four rooms and a small enclosed sunning deck to call their own. It is called Cookie’s Place- named after my Top Cat, Cookie Princess Warrior.
“Cookie is 11 years old and my “angel”. She contracted feline leukemia from a rescue cat I brought in several years ago. My wonderful Cookie contracted leukemia from her — although she is still quite the healthy and dominant diva right now! We have dedicated ourselves to Cookie’s remaining years and have a special place in our hearts for feline leukemia-positive cats because of this situation.
“The leukemia cats are the ones that get to sleep with us every night if they want to. They all have access to a sun room, our bedroom, a second and third bedroom. They are all connected by cat doors which they freely navigate.

“The rooms are all cat friendly. From the second bedroom they have access via kitty door to a safely enclosed sunning deck where they get to watch the great outdoors. There are lots of chairs, beds and other amenities to make their lives comfortable.
“Medically, they are looked after and monitored daily. They will start off in large open condos where they will get to meet the residents slowly.
“With Cover Girl being feral, we will take things at her own speed and provide her with privacy and low/no stress while still watching over her. She will progress at her own pace and whatever she wants to do (or doesn’t want to do) is fine with us.
“Being feral, if she does become symptomatic, we will just have to play it by ear. We will not let her suffer but we won’t cut her time short either. They all eat premium food and get supplements
“Their house mates include Cookie, (Top Cat and Famous Artiste!- has raised money for SCR with her works), Licorice ( understudy to CPW), Tigger,(docile Mama), Wren, Rocky, ( Tigger’s two sassy but adorable five month old kittens), Dakota, ( the grumpy matriarch), Petunia (who rules everyone when Cookie isn’t looking!), Cap’n Jack ( a one-eyed, FIV+ and FELV+ boy), Salty, (the shy one),Sabre,(Big Daddy) and Robin (the social butterfly).

“The cats live pretty harmoniously and for the most part get along- until Petunia decides it’s time to remind everyone that Cookie might be Top Cat, but its really HER that runs the show… which then gets Licorice going…. I can only imagine what Cover Girl, Frogger and the second Salty will have to say about all of this!”
And all any of us at Best Friends can say is “Wow! Thank you!”
