Pennsylvania makes kitten-saving history!
How did they save 1,000 baby kitties in one weekend?

This past weekend, the Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Association (PACCA), an Alliance Participating Organization made history.

That is by dramatically reducing its adoption fees for cats in an effort to incentivize the public to come to the shelter, which was filled to capacity with cats and kittens. This PACCA initiative was set forth in an effort to save lives, and due to the overwhelming response to this special weekend-long program, over 250 cats were adopted!

There was a good amount of feedback generated from the event, and there were some comments made about how our sister Alliance, the Mayor's Alliance for New York City's Animals, weighed in on the issue. Below is a message sent today from the New York City Alliance supporting both the Philadelphia Alliance, and PACCA's lifesaving efforts:

"The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals has not heretofore made any comment, independently or in response to inquires, re: the PACCA adoption event.

However, and for the record, The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals is very proud of its sister Alliance in Philadelphia, which is modeled on the NYC Alliance, and applauds PACCA, a member organization of the Philadelphia Alliance, for its lifesaving efforts on behalf of Philadelphia's felines."

Our thanks to the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals for their support of the Alliance for Philadelphia's Animals and PACCA's special adoption event.

Adoption numbers up is very good. But, I would like to know about the how they screen adopters and if they do follow-up. Many adopters are not suited to being pet owners and all adoptions should be done with the utmost care to avoid situations like the one in Salt Lake City, UT this October. Story below:

I hope the PA group that is showing these fantastic adoption numbers are also practicing strong screening & follow-up with their adoptors.

being cynical ......how much was the original adoption fee? how much of a discount could they have given? I can't imagine that a discount on an adoption fee would greatly increase the adoptions. I just don't get it. So these people that adopted these kittens at a discounted fee, will they be able to pay the vet bills when the animals get sick, or will they need a discount for that too?

I also wonder if they got good homes... As an AC at a shelter we screen really well and still have problems with people taking care of their animals.. Just because you place it in a home doesn't mean it won't be out on the streets being hit by a car etc...

That is just incredible !!!!!!

This sort of thing terrifies me. They adopted out alot of kittens because they dramatically reduced the adoption fee. I get very worried that alot of these kittens will end up neglected and forgotten when their novelty wears off. If someone really wants, and is able to care for, an animal, then a "dramatically reduced adoption" fee should not be their incentive to bring an animal home.

You've got to be looking at this globally, you have your country doing something...at least so good news and good reporting. However it would be nice to read about other countries adopting ASPCA type governing laws for themselves and joining the cause for global animal protection.
