Not sure how to help animals? Drive a leg of a transport!!
Maybe you don't have any extra money to donate to an animal charity. Perhaps you don't have the available space to foster a homeless animal, or have time to volunteer at a shelter. But there is something you can do; drive even one leg of a transport.

Sometimes a transport will move just one dog or cat from a high-kill shelter to a foster family where it'll be safe until it gets its forever home. Sometimes a transport will move many dogs from shelters to rescues where they will go to families who will love them. No matter how many there are or where they're going, the time you give and the distance you drive will bring them that much closer to being happy, safe and loved.

You don't need an SUV, a big cargo van or any fancy equipment either. You can use your every day vehicle that you take to work. Just throw a blanket in the back and maybe a toy and some biscuits and you're good-to-go. It won't take much of your time.....maybe an hour or so, and that hour you give can mean life or death to that animal.

We all know that an animal's time in the shelter is limited, but if no one volunteers for a transport, they will never have a chance at leaving that shelter and finding a family who will love them the way they deserve to be loved. So c'mon. If you've never transported before, now is a great time to start. You can spare a little time for them once in awhile can't you? Please?

Transporting is an awesome experience. Not only do you get to be a part of rescuing a dog/cat that might otherwise be euthanized but you also meet wonderful people who love doing the same thing. My husband and I have transported from one dog to ten dogs at a time, from one hour to six hours in a day (it's your choice). There is not one animal that I would not have wanted for my own. Helping to save an animal from sure death is the most rewarding thing in resuce that I have ever done. And many of the transports we drive for email the status of the animals. I usually cry when I read that they have been adopted! We cannot save them all but transporting saves many lives.
Until there are none, rescue one.....

Hi...is there a database of drivers available for transport "legs" for the States of Nebraska or Iowa? If so, how does one submit their name to participate?

I did not set this community up with a database, however there are many in the "yahoo groups" that do have databases of people willing to drive.

For this community, just set your alert to "on" in each state you are willing to drive in. Then when someone posts that they are in need of a driver in a state, you will receive an alert and can contact the person posting the request if you are able to help.

This is a great group on Yahoo. I joined this spring and have helped many animals get to their forever homes or rescue. It's easy, you sign up for "digest" and get a once a day list of all the postings. You see if anyone is going through your town and sign up if you wish to. Come join us! It's is very rewarding.

I would be interested in transporting, how would I get started in my area?

I have been transporting for about 2.5 years, and I have had the pleasure of driving pits. I can tell you they are the most loving of all dogs. I don't think I have driven a bad dog yet. They are loving because they know they are being given a second chance.

Since I first started to transport, the number of people stepping up to help has been overwhelming. They are everywhere, and it is very exciting to see so many people want to help these dogs find a good home.

Don't forget, there are cat transports too. Cats are being killed even more than dogs. So if there is a cat transport in your area, it would be great to see more people start transporting cats too!

libovere30,

Hi,

I've done a few dog transports, though I'm really a cat person. I'm certainly not a true dog handler, so I have to be careful about which dogs I agree to transport.

I'd love to help with cats, and am all too familiar with the number of cats being killed in Animal Control Facilities.

For the next couple of months, our finances will be tight.. I'd spend the money on a transport in a minute, but I have to live with my husband, who often thinks otherwise. I seldom work, and have time to do transports (short distances or long distances, especially if there will be a 2nd driver).

Right now, if some or all of my gas expenses can be paid, that would be a huge help. It would be cheaper for me to transport 2-3 cats cats (or ?? maybe a couple of small dogs) since I would probably be able to use or Honda Accord, which gets much better gas mileage than our V8 Chevy Silvarado truck.

My husband has been hesitant about my transporting unknown dogs (especially those coming out of a pound that is often full of sick dogs), but hasn't minded me doing so if they ride in a crate in the camper....at this time, there is no opening between the cab of the truck and the camper shell, so I would not want to transport in the camper in our summer heat (we hope to put a sliding rear window in the truck, which would be great to allow cool air in (I can insulate carriers very well to keep an animal warm, but I'd hate to see one get heat stroke).

Like I said before though, at this time, I can only transport if part or all of my gas expenses are covered (I have gotten this covered a couple of times), or on a rare occasion. Our finances will be looking up in the next several months.

FYI: I live in south, central Louisiana, just off of I 10 between New Orleans and Houston.
