Hooray! The cats can stay
Recently a nearby renter moved and left his 7 cats. We had helped him trap these cats and get them spayed & neutered. 2 of the kittens were fostered out because they were so sick. As I was tending to one of my other colonies, a neighbor informed me that the man had moved from the house and abandoned the cats. I added these cats to my colony rounds. The owner of the property said he wanted to re-rent the house and would love to let the cats stay, but if the new renter doesn't want them, they would have to go. Since the original caretaker had not socialized them, I knew they would not be adoptable and moving them to another area in Mayport would only mean they would be back at "their home" base within hours. I stressed over this problem until today when I showed up to feed them and was told the new renter loved the cats and they were welcome to stay! I was told I could have full access to the property to care for the cats, including installing small shelters for the winter! Every once in a while--a feral gets a break!
