Welcome to the Lodges!

The Lodges, which located in Dogtown behind the Clinic, is home to about 85 dogs. The Lodges has 15 buildings. Each building has four runs with each run housing one to two dogs. In addition, there are several outdoor runs.

The Lodges shares the kitchen in the New Friends building. Most days, there are three caregivers on duty. Because the buildings at the Lodges are spread so far apart, the caregivers use golf carts to get around more quickly.

Volunteers are always welcome! The trails at the Lodges are beautiful but they are not flat so be prepared for a workout! The dogs will also give you a workout because they are so excited to get out that some of them have trouble with “loose leash” walking. Most of the dogs at the Lodges are great with people, just not other dogs. Some dogs have red collars, but there are lots of green collar dogs. Volunteers can walk and help feed the green collar dogs or give treats through the fence and talk to the red collar dogs. For the green collar dogs that are extremely shy or feral, volunteers are encouraged to go in their runs and talk to them and try to give them treats. There are many great green collar dogs that are available for sleepovers too!

On your next visit to Best Friends, stop by and visit the great dogs at the Lodges or take one on a sleepover. Each dog at the Lodges is very special. Come see why!

I volunteered at the Lodges back in September and it was wonderful. The caregivers were great and really care about the dogs . Of course, the dogs themselves were the highlight of my trip!

Lakota Gal and I volunteered at the Lodges. AND, speaking for myself, I did get a work out. There are some fabulous views of the canyon from the trails. Lots of little lizards, too, that the dogs like to chase. A little leash tugging was beneficial for me... it helped me get up the hills. I did have to dig my heels in a time or two on the decent! :o)
