In Memory of Our Special Friend Bryce
We'll miss you sweet boy!
Bryce -- January 1996 - October 2007

Just this side of heave is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he beging to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together . . .

Bryce, dear sweet Bryce: My grief is overwhelming and tears are streaming as I write this. I will always remember how happy you were the day you and I, along with Robin and Joey, went for a walk. I don't know why you had to leave us, but I do know this makes me so very sad I don't know exactly how to express my feelings except through my tears. Dear sweet Joey, I know you will miss your friend even more than the rest of us who knew him. I will pray extra hard that you find a forever home. Bryce and Joey: I love you both, and I grieve for the loss of Bryce and for Joey's sadness and distress. Love, kisses, and prayers to you, Joey, from Wyoming.

Bryce, it's my belief you are a whole and well again, you have all four legs, and you are running free and happy with so many who have passed before you. It's also my belief you will watch over Joey. Tell Dermie, Howie, King, Zeus, Brutus, and so many others - tell them all hello. Love and kisses to you Bryce from Wyoming.

Jeanne and Robin: Thank you so much for giving Joey and Bryce one last chance to be with each other. You gave them both a very special gift, and they will both always remember that gift. Thank you for your kindness and love for them. cc

I read the update when he was taken to the clinic, and said a prayer and hoped he'd recovery soon and get back to playing with Joey.

I'm so very sad to learn he's passed....

I'm confused, what happened, I read how he was doing so well and then??????
Did they find something or did he go into distress again??? How sad for all the caregivers who thought he was going to be Ok....
He can now run and play with Racer and Koala, I bet they all have a great time!!

Oh your last day
You looked into my eyes
And you kissed me.
It is a kiss
I shall keep in my heart
Forever.

I just returned from 4 days of volunteering at The Lodges. I logged onto the site..excited to enter some information on all of the dogs I worked with, and the ones who specifically stood out in my mind. I was heartbroken to see this about Bryce. I took him for a walk (with Joey) three days in a row, and he was so sweet! I was told that he could balance on his two front legs while he pee'd! I was anxious to see that trick..but he never did it while I was there. The people that work at The Lodges are great...they work their butts off! I have worked at other areas of the sanctuary as well, and this time spent at The Lodges was definately the most fulfilling yet. I look forward to helping them out on my next visit..they need it!!

On Saturday afternoon, after Jeanne and Robin walked Joey with Bryce in the morning, I took Joey down to walk him with Bryce again. When Phyllis brought Bryce out the back door of the clinic, we noticed that he didn't look like he was feeling well. Joey and Bryce did a quick sniff of each other to say "hi" and then Phyllis took Bryce back into the clinic. At about 4:00, Terry was told that Bryce's stomach had failed and he was going to have more surgery. Terry, Nola, Thomas and I all stayed while Drs. Patti and Tara took Bryce to surgery. They removed his spleen because it was not in good shape and, when they got to the stomach, they saw that it had perforated. There was nothing they could do for Bryce and they never woke him up from the surgery. Dr. Patti was crying as she told us how sorry she was that she could not help him. After Bryce bloated, Dr. Patti had a difficult time untwisting his stomach and said that it was in pretty bad shape but she hoped that it would heal. Unfortunately, it did not. Terry, Nola and I said our goodbyes to Bryce that evening; I know that we were all very grateful to Dr. Patti, Dr. Tara, Phyllis and everyone else who tried their best to help Bryce. We are very lucky to have such a caring staff of professionals looking after these animals.

Thank you for letting us know the whole story, Emily. And you are right, we at Best Friends are very fortunate to have the Veterinarians and Clinc Staff that we have been blessed with. Our caregivers, and volunteers who knew Bryce will miss him. Thanks to you, and Nola, for the great pictures of our boy, Bryce.

Dear Jim and Emily,
Thank you so much for the full story..I have been thinking about it all day..wondering what happened to Bryce. You might remember me..maybe not. I was volunteering there just over a week ago. I own a mobile dog grooming business in Boulder Colorado..and I am hooked on The Lodges! I have worked in other areas of the sanctuary, but my time at The Lodges was the most fulfilling yet. You guys need more staff! You work your butts off! But I understand that it can be a bit difficult to find decent volunteers to work in such a challenging area. Thank you so much for the update. I am going to go on and enter a little bit of information on each particular dog that "spoke to me" while I was there! It's amazing how much you can become attached to them in such a short period of time. God Bless you guys...and the work that you do..it's a wonderful thing.

Bryce, you will never know how many hearts you touched. We all love you and miss you very much. Thank you for sharing Bryce's story with all of us - it is appreciated. The Lodges doggies are indeed very easy to love - they are so sweet, and so grateful for every little bit of love they receive.

To Bryce:

I will always remember:
Your sweet smile,
Your happiness at going for a walk,
The gentle way you cared for Joey,
The love in your eyes when you looked at Robin the day we walked;
Your gentle soul,
The soft breeze which ruffled your tail,
The way you sniffed the trail as if you had never been there before,
The sparkle in your eyes when you found "just the right bush",
How well you did on only three legs,
Your spirit, your love for life.
I will always miss you, Bryce.
I will also always be happy I met you before you were called home.
With love, hugs, and kisses to you, my friend.

I met Joey 3 days ago and I met Jeanne who loved them both in The Lodge dogs area. I am honored to have met them both but I wish I could have seen them together and have the pleasure of walkin them together along with Jeanne.
