UPDATE: Fosters needed! Best Friends LA Pup-My-Ride Approaches the 500 Mark
In just five months, almost 500 dogs have gone from overcrowded LA shelters to adoptive homes awaiting them in Salt Lake City.
By Laura Thompson, Best Friends VolunteerUPDATE: Fosters needed! See below for more information.
On any given day in LA shelters, there are an overwhelming number of small purebreds, designer hybrids, unique mixes and tiny puppies, all clamoring to get out of kennels. Meanwhile in SLC, a dearth of such dogs and puppies available for adoption means that there are many people waiting with open arms to welcome them.
Pup-My-Ride alleviates this problem in LA and meets the demand in SLC with twice-monthly transports of up to 25 little ones at a time - as many as will fit crated into the donated cargo van. As of mid-October, 438 dogs, plus an additional 20 to 25 on Oct. 21st, had been brought via Kanab to the Humane Society of Salt Lake City, Utah. The next trip on Nov. 4th will bring the total number to 500 or more.

None of this would be possible if not for the efforts of Pup-My-Ride program leader
Robin Harmon and Best Friends LA volunteers, who prepare the dogs in the days before the transport, load them into crates on the day of the trip and drive the cargo van to Kanab.

For the upcoming transport on Nov. 4th, Robin needs volunteer help at Baldwin Park shelter this
Sunday from 10:30am onward, bathing and grooming dogs as necessary, and
again on Tuesday morning, documenting and loading dogs into crates. A volunteer may also be needed to drive three or four dogs from the South LA shelter (no paperwork) on Tuesday at 7:30am to Baldwin Park.
Pup-My-Ride especially needs temporary fosters for redlisted small dogs from South LA and other City shelters for anywhere from one day to two weeks until the next transport.
If you can help Pup-My-Ride in LA as a volunteer or foster, please contact Robin Harmon at RobinH@bestfriends.org.
Then think of 500 Pup-My-Ride dogs waving pawsand wagging tails in thanks from happy homes in Utah!
