Ohio: The Search for Curly (Missing Dog Update).
The search continues for Curly, a beagle mix who went missing during a transport pit stop in Kirkersville, Ohio on the morning of April 18, 2008.

By Susan Meyer: Executive Director, KAT 5 Animal Rescue

Curly, who spent the last six months at Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah, was on her way to her “forever home”. Curly is a very scared dog that is unpredictable. Curly escaped near the Flying J Travel Plaza located at Exit 122 - East bound of I-70 in Kirkersville, Ohio.

Curly has since been sighted several times a few miles from this location. She has no pattern of movement. It is very important that no one try to approach her. Curly will be caught with the traps put out in relation to the sightings of her.

Volunteers have the search covered at this time.

“We do not want her spooked more and to then run farther”, said Paula Evans of Second Chance Humane Society today.

Curly was last seen yesterday near Fairfield County, Ohio. Curly is still dragging her lead. She darted across I-70.

Curly appears to be in good condition other than having lost a lot of
weight.

“We need everyone to stay calm and stay positive”, Evans, said. “Dogs pick up on your emotions and she is running scared”.

Curly was wearing a red collar with three tags. (The contact information on the tags is Best Friends). The collar looks like this: http://www.jbpet.com/Lupine-3and4-Combo-Collar-Solids,267.html

Curly’s lead is one inch wide and four feet long. The lead is light olive green with a cotton snap.

“She has chewed many a lead off. So I have no doubt that she can chew it off if it becomes entangled”, Becky Tegze of Pets Alive in Middletown, New York said.

Cathy... thanks for the thoughts and prayers. I know, I keep telling her the same things... THIS IS YOUR MOTHER SPEAKING, please, please, get in those traps already and come on home. Hunter is waiting. He will share everything he owns with you. Mac shares some things w/me but not everything. Mom even got you a new crate and a pink mat to go inside. He says "pink, what's with pink?" Mac (our big bro) and I don't like pink. Oh well, boys, Mom is going to have a little girl to spoil. Mom has even told us that we have to make room on the bed for one more. Oh well. That is wonderful about the sighting this a.m. in the barn sleeping with the farmers dog. Yeah, Curly. That's it... keep on trusting. Just a little bit more. Know that soooooo much love is coming your way. Love, Mom (Dee)

I so pray that she is safe and ready to be "caught." She must be so tired of running. Thank you all of you for all that you are doing to bring her home to us. The furnace man was just here for our annual tune-up and Curly-Girl's brother, Hunter, just could not get enough scratching and petting from him. I almost cried. Eight months ago, when we first got him, he scooted away from attention. He was so not used to people lovin on him. Now, he is a love bug. Wants his share all the time and even comes and initiates it. I know this will happen for our Curly. She will just need time, lots of lovin and TLC (some cheese won't hurt either). Hunter is also very treat oriented. His blindness has never been an issue. He has adapted so well to it and sort of uses his big bro, Mac, as a seeing eye dog. Follows him everywhere. He also likes our beautiful cat, RedBoy. We have a nice pack and can't wait for that little girl to join us. Thanks for listening, Dee

Tonight, tonight, I'll see my love tonight.
And for us, stars will stop where they are"

sorry for the breaking out in tune with some west side story....................

many many many prayers.............

What GREAT news!! It is happy endings like this that make animal rescue bearable. Everyone working together and all the prayers made this happen. I thought about Curly every night before I fell asleep. As a transporter it is my biggest nightmare to have a dog get loose. Thanks to everyone on the ground who helped get Curly to safety and to a new happy home. I will sleep good tonight!

Thank you everyone for your kind words and shared concern for Curly Girl! Don, Paula, Peg, Becky, Danielle, Bonnie, Cathy, Cathy, Mike, Rich, Jim, Dee, Joyce, The Flying J, John, Jim, Junebug (Don's dog who helped to search for Curly), Mike and Kelly, Sebastian, the community...THANK YOU!

How Curly was finally caught:

The day before Curly was caught she was seen going into a barn owned by a wonderful couple named Mike and Kelly. (They saw the flier and called). Curly had cuddled up with the family's cattle dog named Sebastian in their barn but was gone now. (Finally a pattern may have emerged to Curly's aimless wanderings!). Don, Paula and Peg closed up the holes in the barn (having received permission to do so) and camped out for the night hoping to finally get Curly. The cattle dog was crying (we think for Curly) and then Curly was there going into the barn! At about 3:30 AM Paula, Peg and Don closed the door and almost got Curly but she got away! They spent the remainder of the night and early morning waiting for her to return.

The next night the couple saw Curly go into the barn via their security camera. When they walked into the barn Curly bolted again and they threw a coat over her. They then chased the coat around! Curly then entered a stall and they closed the door and phoned Paula. Paula headed over and got Curly!

The couple's daughter said to Paula that they figured, with so many people looking for Curly, she must be Donald Trump's dog! :) This couple is going to receive the $500. reward for Curly that Best Friends put up. Sebastian, the cattle dog was instrumental in Curly's return as well. We have since learned that the 2 dogs that Curly lived with in Utah were cattle dogs!

Curly was seen by the Vet yesterday. She had ticks and some parasites but is otherwise doing well.

Congratulations to everyone involved. Sounds like Sebastian would like to have a companion!

thank you susan for the detailed update. and (again) thank you for all your hard work - and NOT giving up on us or Curly

mimi sebastian may need a friend. BUT not this special girl... she will be going to her new home in NY with her REAL/Blood brother and family (as long as best friends says she is healthy enough).
maybe we can get sebastian another friend. :)

cant wait to see you curly-girl!

Paula - thank you for everything,
CathyP

Thank you Sebastian for helping in the rescue of our little Curly-Girl. As soon as I get your address we will be sending you a thank you package from Curly and her brother, Hunter.

Can't wait to meet our little one as soon as she is realeased and can travel. She is having lots of R&R with Paula. We hope she can be transported next weekend sometime.

In the meantime, you are ALL in our prayers with gratitude. What an effort on the part of so many people.

While she isn't Donald Trump's dog (as quoted by Sebastian's human sister in the post above about her capture) she is coming home to a family who will cherish her and she will never want for anything for the rest of her life. She will have 2 doggie brothers (Hunter, her natural brother) and Mac (our big golden retriever) and one cat brother (BigRed) a wonderful orange tabby boy who loves dogs.

Her brother, Hunter, is slowly going blind but does very well. He will just love having another doggie in the house. Mac, a golden who never gets enough attention, will learn to share even more. There is more than enough love in this house for all of them. We are so happy to bring Hunter and Curly back together. **Now, Simba Sue is at Best Friends awaiting adoption (another sibling). Maybe Sebastian would like to meet her. Wish we could bring her home also, but, our immediate goal is to get Curly-Girl home and settled in.

Thanks again... Dee

Hello there,
Was hoping I could find out if at this point Curly has been transported back East to her new owner.

I was SO relieved when I heard she was caught.
I am not lying when I say that it completely made my entire week (or more) once I heard (and not many things in the rescue world do these days).
I was one of the people that went to the Flying J to try to help out on the first Saturday that she was missing. Who could have known at that point that this ordeal could have such an incredible ending !!!!!
So great.

Best wishes,
Cathy C.
