Vet Tech Brings Rabbit Back to Life!
Sarah Waltke is normally a vet tech in New York, working with Dr. Laura George at Catnip and Carrots Veterinary Hospital. But recently, she came to the Bunny Rescue Ranch to help the rabbits in need. And boy, did they need her as it turned out!
Not only was Sarah a huge help day in and day out of her week-long stay. But one day, there was an emergency.
Patty the rabbit had stopped breathing. No one was sure what had caused it. Patty was rushed over to the medical area where Sarah immediately began giving her mouth-to-mouth. It was a small puff of air every two to three seconds to keep oxygen running to Patty’s brain while the doctor worked to get her breathing on her own. But then Patty’s heart stopped!
Immediately, the team went to work giving Patty heart compressions and epinephrine to bring her back to life. With continued CPR and epinephrine, the heartbeat returned! But Patty was still not breathing, so Sarah continued to give her mouth-to-mouth.
After 15 minutes, Patty was at last, breathing on her own again.
She was kept warm and monitored closely for the next several hours. And the next morning? She woke up and started bouncing around as though nothing had happened. Today, she’s a healthy, happy rabbit!
“This bunny had a strong will to survive,” said Sarah. “A lot of people worked together to save her. I feel we were a small part of a giant miracle.”
