43 is the number to beat now
The team at Best Friends rabbit rescue ranch in Reno experienced a personal best on Tuesday with 36 spay/neuters performed in one day. And then they bested themselves on Wednesday with 43 spay/neuters. According to Best Friends Rapid Response Manager Richard Crook, when things “really get going” 43 spay/neuters might be considered a slow day.

“We have a small army of vets coming in to volunteer,” said Crook (pictured left). “And when we get all our systems in place, we should see spay/neuter numbers increase.”
One thing that will help immensely is an additional anesthesia machine, expected to arrive at the ranch next week. Also, Crook plans to build a small room in the back of the ranch to prep the bunnies for their operations. When that’s in place, the vet techs can do the prep work instead of the vets. Currently, the doctors prep the bunnies, re-scrub in and then operate.
“Once the prep room is up and running, the vets can just spay, neuter, spay, neuter all day,” said Crook.
There could come a time when the number of spay/neuters reaches over the three-digit mark a day. When that happens, it shouldn’t be too long before the number of spay/neuters necessary decreases to no digits!
