Thanks to everyone who searched, posted and networked for Aurora's safe capture. She's now back at Best Friends getting rehydrated and gaining back a few pounds.

Aurora went missing Friday, Oct 2 from the Squaw Trail area behind Kanab City Park in Kanab, UT (near Best Friends). She is a black shepherd mix with some tan highlights and was wearing a green collar and dragging a leash. Aurora is shy so please do not chase her!

UPDATE: Sighting on Sunday - about noon way up on Squaw Trail. She saw the person and bolted the other direction. good news is her leash is now only about 6-8 inches hanging from her collar so she obviously got stuck and chewed herself loose.

Fredonia Humane Society has grown immensely over the past decade from a small local shelter housing a half a dozen dogs to a nationally recognized organization whose focus is riveted on helping make spay/neuter an option on the Native American reservation as a way to reduce rampant overpopulation. During these last ten years we have had the most wonderful good fortune to network with people all across the country who are just as excited about this opportunity to make such strides and have generously given their time, money and emotional strength. How truly humbling this whole adventure has been with the level of support received and the multitude of friends we have made. For this we are forever grateful.

FHS and Best Friends have secured grant funding to continue this mission for the next two years with an onsite mobile spay/neuter program set for every six months directly at the Gap, the small northern Arizona Navajo village where progress has been documented by two episodes of DogTown on National Geographic channel. Outcome from the first event last October had 60 dogs spayed or neutered by a single veterinarian, which means the next one will provide even higher numbers with two or three vets. Additionally, grant funding will be sought to continue to supply Gap dogs with food, medication and shelter, as well as provide education to residents about the importance of positive human/animal relationships.

Back at home, FHS has entered into a contract with the Town of Fredonia to provide care for dogs who are retrieved within the Town limits by animal control, which is now under the jurisdiction of the Marshal's office. This is the only housing that will occur at the shelter. As such, we are in immediate need of homes for a handful of highly adoptable dogs; ideally they will be placed directly with adopters rather than fosters or other shelters. A letter ~~Home~~ to my friends at FHS

Hello to everyone, it is me! Zinnia!

I guess you guys wonder where I went or did you figure it out already? I went to my forever home and you will NEVER guess who lives here with me! ZEPHYR do!

When I firstest got here, I were scared to come in the door, but then I smelled my brother and I decided to go in. Him ran up to me and we said a quick hello. I found this lovely place to jump up on to (I later discovered it is a couch meant for humans, but that don’t matter much to me) where I could observe everything and see where I were…it wasn’t anything like the shelter.

Ms. Kelly was with me. You guys remember her? She picked me up from Ms. Lisa far far away from the shelter. I weren’t afraid though.

Do you know, I have another Brother now; actually 2 new brothers. When Zephyr left the shelter I thought I was down to only one brother, but now I back to having 2 oh wait; make that 3. My new dog brother is Jiminy and he is B I G!

He seemed very happy to see me; at first. Now him gets grumpy with me so I give him lots of space. I guess him figured out I wasn’t just bisitin but I am stayin forevers. My other brother is a kitty named Bissa. Him ok, but if you stick you nose to close to his face – like when you checkin to see what he ate, he WILL bite you on you nose. He is fun to chase too, but momma says not to do that, but sometimes I just can’t help it. We do share the couch sometimes though

My new home has this great place in the back with a high wooden fence for me, Zephyr and Jiminy to play, poop and hang out. You know what, Zephyr was right, it don’t have that sand stuff it got that nice soft green grass stuff and he was right again; it DO taste GOOD! There is also a pool

and a big shaded deck. *There is much more green stuff on the deck now!

Ok, so the pool is a small baby pool but works for me and Zeph. My new mom, her name is Lisa, she said that next year she will get me and Zephyr a bigger pool to play in! Zephyr and I play ALL the time – we love to play on Momma’s bed; especially when her is sleeping! She makes funny noises when we do that.

I been here in this place for a while now (31 days in human counting) and I got the situation figured out…a’course, Zephie filled me in on lots of stuff, but I figured a lot of it out all by myself. Here is what I know:

1. My new momma is a sucker for a cute face

2. Couches and human beds are wonderful to sleep on *note bone*

3. My momma will give you what you want if you look cute at her

4. If you are scared enough; you can fit through a doggie door that is meant for smaller dogs (noise Monster – see #14) excepts if u are Jiminy

5. My momma loves to hug

6. Poopie accidents are frowned upon but understood it’s an accident

7. My momma loves to kiss you

8. You get treats more frequently

9. My momma takes me on walks and car rides

10. Belly rubs Rock

11. My momma protects me from mean Jiminy

12. Bows in your hair aren’t all that bad

13. My momma will protect me from Zeph when he bites my legs or grabs my ears and pulls

14. You can easily go from 0 to 90 in 2 seconds flat when a big noise happens (referring to #4)

15. You can in fact, pop out a screened in window without ripping the screen (see #14)

16. Kitties are fun to chase

17.Them Cell phones don’t taste good. And finally;

18.Having your forever home with a forever momma is reely very good.

Don’t you guys worry any about me. I am very good. I have my brother Zephyr and we play all the time. We sleep together when momma isn’t home and we get into trouble…well, Zephyr do; I just follow along to observe. He do try to blame me for stuffs like when he ate up momma’s new BF Magazine and hid it under my bed in my crate.

I’m learning that those humans aren’t so bad; at least my momma human isn’t so bad. I gave her a kiss the other day to show my appreshashun for all her do for me. I think she liked it. I may do it again.

Hi Timber and Bunny. Miss you guys…..just a little.

Thanks to FHS for letting me stay there and rescuing me from death. Momma, Zephyr and I will be forever thankful for that. Jiminy is still on the fence.

I hope you all find a forever home really soon…..put on your reely cute faces and sit on your bottoms and look longingly at them humans; it works, I swear! *see picture under #1

Relationship-based Dog Training

Instinct. Emotion. Feelings. Your dog has all of these traits and more but often displays them in what seems like uncontrolled behaviors. To him it's natural; to you it's frustrating. Help him become a happier, more confident and better behaved family member with the motivation and enthusiasm of relationship-based training.

Positive reinforcement is important for training any species – even humans! – by creating an upbeat, constructive environment rather than one that elicits fear and shame. The key is to ignore incorrect behavior and praise/reward your dog when he performs the right one. The first time you see your dog have that "light bulb" moment as he's figuring out the desired behavior, you'll appreciate how relationship-based training taps into a dog's natural abilities. Their joy of accomplishment is contagious. Set them up for success from the beginning and you will see results almost immediately.

Athena Update

Athena, the little girl who was left for dead in the hot sun after being hit by a car, has been accepted into Healing Heart Sanctuary in Kanab, a remarkable organization that rehabs/rehomes injured and disabled animals. She had followup X-rays mid July to assess her body's healing process, and it's still wait-and-see for surgery. Enjoy photos of Athena leaving the clinic and meeting her new pals.

Adoption Update: Autumn's Paradise

From mom Kelly:

In just a few short months Autumn has definitely decided the Pacific Northwest is the place for her. I think we'd have a hard time getting her to move away. She is in love with the grass, lakes, rivers, food and most of all the squirrels.

She goes running with Jenny and I every morning on a squirrel filled trail about a half mile from my house. The whole time we run she has one eye and ear on constant squirrel patrol and if she hears or sees one the chase begins. I'm attached to the other end of the leash so I spend a lot of time holding on for dear life. If she sees the squirrel go up a tree, she tries to climb the tree. It's hilarious to see her leaping up the tree with all 4 paws off the ground trying to get the squirrel.

I've always kept Autumn on a leash in unfenced areas because based on past history I thought she'd be a runner. Now I'm not so sure and we are very, very slowly working on off-leash trianing. When we first got here I took her to large (22 acres), fully fenced dog park, screwed up my courage and let her off the leash. I figured she'd run as fast as she could and hopefully I could catch her before she scaled the fence. But she surprised me and stuck right next to me, she'd walk a few feet in front of me then stop and turn around as if to say come on mom hurry up. The first time I thought maybe she was just nervous and wanted to stick next to me but we've been there many more times and she still sticks close. So maybe there's hope that she'll be ok offleash in unfenced areas. I'm a bit of a nervous nellie and super scared of losing her so it'll probably take years of her behaving at the dog park before I'm willing to give it a try out in the woods. I don't think she really minds the leash.

She also loves water - she doesn't swim but she does wade into the water until it's half way up her body then she looks down and bites at the water or splashes and flops around like a fool.

She loves the fact that food grows everywhere here and has become quite the scavenger. Our yard has a few apple, pear and cherry trees and she loves to lie in the grass under the trees eating the fruit that falls. Blackberries grow everywhere up here and they are just starting to ripen. We took her for a walk on Sunday and noticed that she kept poking her head into the blackberry bushes. At first we thought she was eating grass blades that poke up through the bushes but then we realized she was eating blackberries. She'd grab the berry with just her teeth then gobble it up. We plan on planting a large garden in our backyard soon, we'll have to find a creative method of keeping Princess Autumn out of the fruits and veggies.

Weekend Walkabout July 18 &19 - Local Volunteers Come Join Us!

If you're in or around the Kanab/Fredonia area on Sat/Sun, July 18 & 19, come join us for a weekend walkabout to help the dogs stretch their legs. It has been a couple of weeks - between the heat and fewer volunteers - since the kids have been able to get their customary weekend walks. Just need 4-5 people for a couple of hours each morning starting at 9am UT time. Thank you! =)

There are always a lot of unknowns when it comes to venturing into the Gap, a Native American village in northern Arizona: How many dogs or puppies will be found? Will they be injured? Starving? Will they have trust enough to accept our help, or will they run for the hills in fear? Will a litter of puppies - who have had the misfortune of learning to be afraid - scamper in all directions where we can only catch a few?

Many times at the stray dog area of this little village, several sets of eyes watch from a safe distance while food and water are put on the ground; once everyone has retreated to a safe distance so these apprehensive dogs feel a bit more secure, the relief is instant to see them converge on the bowls.

Cathie Myers' trip this particular day rendered an entirely new and unknown factor that was both heartening and a definite sign of progress. As Humane Education manager for Best Friends Animal Society, it was Cathie's sole objective to create awareness in outlying communities by empowering residents with the ability to enact positive change. She found out one morning how the two-year presence of Best Friends and Fredonia Humane Society has impacted Gap locals to become involved in their own spay/neuter project.

As Cathie was filling water bowls this early Sunday morning, a local woman came over to the van and asked “Are you from that group in Utah? Are you with Tom [Corrigan from Fredonia Humane Society]?” When Cathie said yes, the woman excitedly told her she had received a call from FHS to say her dog was next on the list to be spayed. Then the woman mentioned she had missed the food drop a few days earlier and asked if Cathie had any more. She gave the woman a bag and went back to filling more bowls.

Soon after, more people showed up to inquire about the spay/neuter program, find out when the next food drop was and to see if FHS had room for litters of puppies. Cathie, while giving one elderly woman food for a momma dog with seven 4-week-old pups, explained how the babies needed to stay with the mom until at least 6 to 8 weeks so they receive natural immunity from the mom's milk and become better socialized. The woman then asked if she could be placed on the list to have the momma dog spayed because she didn't want anymore puppies.

Others stopped by to alert Cathie of stray dogs in their neighborhoods and people feeding colonies of cats who could use some help. One nicely dressed woman on her way to church - after explaining how many dogs and cats she and a neighbor feed together and receiving food for their wonderful efforts - excitedly remarked she was going right back home to put out the food before she went to church. When she confided in Cathie that she often mixes boiled meat, rice and chicken broth for the stray dogs, Cathie realized just how many of these folks care about the animals in the best way they can. She said she is very appreciative to have been given this insight to those who live at the Gap, because it illustrates how the chain of progress can easily grow with the tiniest of links.
