National Geographic's DOGTOWN Filming FHS Follow-Up Episode! UPDATE 4-7-09
4-7-09: The Gap's s/n event was a tremendous success - both days filled up with appts by early morning. The turnout was so great that nearly 60 dogs were sterilized, the majority being male pit bulls. Close to 200 shots were given and a couple pallets of food were dispersed to those who fixed or vaccinated their dogs.
It was originally planned for two vets with the goal of 100, but we ended up with the powerhouse talents of Dr. Mike who smoothly performed all 60 by himself.
Now that the ball is rolling, we're already making plans for a second MASH operation to continue preventive efforts so dogs like Marinara (below) - who was so pregnant she gave birth to 11 pups on the way back to FHS - don't ever have babies.
A great big thanks to everyone from Best Friends, FHS and National Geographic who helped the whole process run so well, and to those who slept overnight in sleeping bags to stay with the recuperating dogs.

Back in the summer of 2007, FHS was very fortunate to have National Geographic come along to film
an episode of
DogTown about The Gap, a rural Native American village in Arizona that struggles with animal overpopulation, strays and disease. After the show aired at the beginning of 2008, we saw it help bring about a better understanding to the plight of reservation dogs by following the stories of Tiki, Hemi and Polly who were all found at the dumpsters.
And now they're back for a second time to capture a monumental event that has transpired from the collaborative efforts of FHS and BF.
Friday and Saturday, April 3 & 4, a MASH-style mobile spay/neuter operation will take place right at The Gap with the projected number of sterilizations at
100. With spring and puppy season now upon us, this couldn't be more timely for reducing the numbers we expect to find at the dumpsters over the next several months.
