Kali is a 3 year old Shar Pei mix who came to us from Texas. She was picked up there as a stray, and the shelter she was at was having financial difficulties, so we brought a few dogs here. What a dolly this girl is! She loves everybody! Always has wags and kisses for everyone who comes to see her. She can be Bossy with other dogs though. She likes to play, but if they get to rough, or if they are a clumsy puppy like her runmate Baja, she will definitely tell them! Aside from her adorably soft muzzle, Kali has another interesting quality about her... she has double dew claws on both her back feet! Pretty neat looking! I don't know... maybe she has some Great Pyrenees in her!

Rufio

Rufio is a one and a 1/2 year old Pitti/ Bassett mix! Oh My, what a cutie!!! Look at those feet! I am at a loss at the moment about where we got Rufio. But wherever he came from, it was their loss! He is such an awesome boy! For those of you who are Jackson fans, he has a similar personality. He just wants to give you love and kisses! And he is a "leaner", soaking up attention whenever he can get it. Rufio has moved in with Julep, and they are very happy together. They play constantly! Everyone needs to come visit this cutie-pie!

Buford

Buford is a 1 year old Retriever/ Border Collie mix who is a stray from Fredonia, AZ. He is shy when you first meet him and he's a little hand shy. He wants to meet people, he's just not sure who to trust. But once he knows you he is an absolute doll! He's very calm and affectionate. Though you'd never know he was calm from being in his run. Right now he is in with "the young crowd". Our largest group includes Buford, Baja, Bauble, Reba and Jenni. They are all 1-2 years old and they run around playing like crazy! Then they all feel the need to fight for visitors attention when you enter the run, jumping and barking, trying to get the best pets!

Julep

If the inventor of the leash had just one dog in mind, it was Julep. This boxer girl just loves walks, in fact she loves every activity involving people. She probably enjoyed lots of walks and attention from her first person. Unfortunately her person slipped into a coma and there was no one there who could care for Julep. That's how she came to Best Friends.

Julep just moved over from another area called Amra's. To check out some cool photos and reviews from her caregivers there, here's the link to Julep's life at Amra's . You can see from the photos she's into naps and "zoomies" as much as walks. Julep is the total package.

Julep adores people, however is particular about other dogs. Anyone available who can provide a home where she can be the only princess in residence? She's also quite the climber, so a secure fence should surround her castle.

Cedar

What a handsome boy! Cedar is 1-2 years old and came from a shelter in Cedar City not too far from here. The shelter found him tied to a tree in a local park without food or water. Since he is such a great boy, we brought him back with us to Best Friends! This guy is a real sweetie! He needs some work though, as we were informed by a visitor who had him on his first sleepover "....he is just like having a 2 year old kid.... into everything and not quite potty trained." So we'll be working with him on his manners, and we ask for your help too! More sleepovers and outings needed for this boy! And you won't regret it! He is so lovable!!!

Pepsi

This is Pepsi, a 5 year old Shepherd/Lab mix who was originally picked up as a stray in Kanab with her son Dean. We're guessing he's her son anyway. They were both picked up in the same area and they are approx. 2 years apart in age. Pepsi was adopted from the Fairway back in January 2009, and just returned a couple of weeks ago. The people who adopted her said they were moving out of state and could not take her where they were going. Fortunately for Pepsi, she was able to move back in with her old boyfriend Enzo!!!! Enzo loved Pepsi and he actually went through mourning her when she got adopted. He literally laid on his bed for 2-3 weeks, visibly depressed. He didn't even do any fencing during that mourning period. Anyone who knows Enzo, that is really saying something.

So, Pepsi is back with Enzo at the Fairway! Pepsi is an escape artist and needs to be in one of our jump runs. She is sneaky and can squeeze through very small gaps in gates and under fences. So any potential adopters need to have something very secure for her. Really she just tries to escape when there are no people around, because she loves everyone and just wants to be in your lap! Pepsi is a LOVE! We missed you Honey!!! Just look at that face!

Dean

This is Dean, a very wonderful Shepherd/Lab mix. Dean has been with us since November 2008. When he first arrived he was very fearful of men, which manifested as him doing some scary barking whenever men entered his run. We have worked with Dean continually on his fear since his arrival, and he has improved considerably! He is still fearful of some men, especially those wearing cowboy hats, but for the most part he is an extremely sweet, lovable boy - who in my opinion is VERY overlooked.

Dean does have a couple small behavior issue that have to be kept in mind if you are interested in adopting him. First, he failed his cat test, so he can not go to a home with kitties. Dean also will sometimes 'gaurd' his food from other dogs. This is really a simple fix. Just keep the dogs separate when feeding and remove bowls before letting the dogs interact again. And last, Dean is what we call 'leash reactive'. This means when he is on a leash, he will bark and pull toward other dogs he sees if they get to close. This is an interesting one to me, because here at the sanctuary Dean goes on off leash hikes with multiple dogs 1-2 times a week, and he does beautifully with everyone! In fact, he is one of the easiest dogs to place new dogs with in his run whenever we get a new addition to The Fairway. He LOVES other dogs and loves to play! There's just something about that leash that makes him feel vulnerable when in the presence of an unfamiliar dog, and he feels the need to react.

Dean is absolutely one of my favorite boys here at the Fairway (don't tell the other babies!!!). He is extremely intelligent and very adoring and loyal. I know Dean's people are out there and he will soon be in a loving, caring home. But until then, we will continue to love and spoil him here. Won't you come visit this wonderful boy!?

Shiva

Shiva! Bless her heart! This beautiful little girl is the Fairway's new "project dog". Shiva is extremely shy. She was relocated here from the Lodges where she has spent the last 6 years of her life. Originally Shiva came to us at 2 years old from a hoarding situation. She was very withdrawn and not wanting any human contact. Over the past year Shiva has started coming out of her shell. Her caregivers at the Lodges have been sending her on walks with volunteers daily, and if you are lucky, she will even take a Ginger Snap or two from you as a treat! They felt Shiva had progressed enough to make her way over to this side of the street where she could meet more people and continue her progress toward finding her forever home. The move has been hard on her though. So we are working with her daily to help her through the transition. Soon Shiva will be out walking with her runmates, Reba and Bauble, exploring her new surroundings and enjoying life to the fullest!

Bramble - Currently in Foster Home

How would you feel if you had been born outside and never had your own home? It's no wonder Bramble is a little shy. But maybe her run mate, the gentle and gracious Astra, is setting a good example, because Bramble's curious stare just radiates wanting to get to know you.

Still a little on the shy side, Bramble now willingly rolls over for belly rubs. Hey that's a start, Bramble. And she has a fierce bark that would drive a burgler away, something that could come in handy in a forever home, right? But don't let that intimidate you, she's really very easy going. She was born in 2005 so she has plenty of time to enjoy her first home. Could that home be with you?

Jackson

What can I say.... Jackson is a doll! Just look at that smile!!! Jackson came to us from Sage Canyon and he is quite possibly the cutest thing ever!!! Don't touch his feet though! He freaks out for some reason. We have to muzzle him for nail trimming. I've tried playing with his feet just to get him use to someone handling them. He still won't let me get close. Kind of funny actually!.... As soon as I go for the paw, he pulls away and darts to the other side of the run. He's starting to think its a game. Not exactly what I had in mind!

Anyway, Jackson is such a loving soul. He always has wags and kisses for everyone who comes to visit him. He does not get along with many male dogs, however he is quite fond of his run mate Desiree! Desiree does have to be the boss, but Jackson doesn't mind. He's a sucker for the ladies!

Dogs of The Fairway : Rugby - ADOPTED!!!

This is Rugby! He was born in April 2009 and is still just a puppy. He is the youngest little man here at the Fairway at only 6 months old! He is a happy, very smart little boy, and very eager to learn new things. We just introduced him to his new runmates Julep and Flynn, and he is having a ball! They both love him and it is really entertaining to watch them all play. Rugby and Flynn are only 3 months apart in age, so when Julep has had enough, these guys just keep on going! Rugby is also extremely affectionate with visitors. Although we discourage jumping up, if you are at his level, Rugby loves to give "hugs". It is obvious he is a very sensitive soul.

Greta

I LOVE this girl!!! Greta is a Boxer/ Hound mix. We got her from the Enoch shelter, a local animal shelter here in UT. Greta is a perfectly behaved little Angel! She is great in the car, great on sleepovers, great everywhere! She just wants to be with people. Greta does have a high prey drive, which unfortunately means she can not go to a home with cats or birds. She loves most other dogs, but sometimes feels like she needs to 'boss around' other female dogs. She is currently enjoying the company of her runmate Gavin, and we're looking for another match who likes to play.

Chelsea is a beautiful 2 year old Greyhound/ Weimaraner mix who came to Best Friends from another sanctuary that was having financial difficulties. Chelsea is shy when she first meets people, but she warms up quickly. She's also shy when first meeting dogs. When we introduced her to Jackson and Katie Moe a couple of days ago, that was very scary for her! Today, only days later, she wags and is eager to get back into the run with them in the morning. She is just a Doll!

Tinker

This is Tinker!!! She is sooooo cool! We just love her! Tinker is a 1 year old St. Bernard who thinks she is a lap dog! She is oh so affectionate, but is a little shy with some men. Tinker was a present given to a young teenage girl last year for Christmas. When the girl had to go off to college, her parents did not want to take care of Tinker, so they brought her to Best Friends. Tinker is now in a run with Bronnie and Dean, who she LOVES by the way! They play like crazy! I think Bronnie's a little jealous.

Doodle

This is our little Doodle Bug! She is an absolute doll! She is 3 1/2 years old and she's a little thing, only weighing about 30 lbs. Doodle is not in a run at the Fairway. She is staying with us in our kitchen due to her tendency to get attacked by other dogs. See, Doodle has a neurological condition known as Cerebellar Abiotrophy. Her condotion is stable now, but it causes her to lose her balance frequently, and she walks and plays in quick jerky movements. The other dogs do not understand this, or do not like it, so they attack her. She wants to play with other dogs though, which is kind of sad. We keep looking for a gentle, fun dog that she can have play dates with, but so far have not found anyone that will accept her as she is.

Dootle LOVES her toys and she is so entertaining to watch! She shakes them, then loses her grip, and they go flying across the room! Then when she finally locates where the toy has gone, she gets all excited again and goes and pounces on it! It is so cute! You have got to come meet this little girl!

Colt

Colt is a 1-2 year old hound who was found abandoned on Best Friends property with his sister Rita. This guy is so sweet, but shy when you first meet him. It took a ton of people half a day to catch him because he was so unsure of everyone. But now that he's made himself comfortable at the Fairway, he couldn't be more lovable! He is slightly more wary of men, and a bit hand shy. However Bryan, another caregiver here, and some great volunteers have been working with him and he is coming around nicely. It seems that he just needs to get to know you first, then he turns into a love bug!

Bacardi

What a sweet, shy boy! You can read it all over his face ....."can I trust you?" For those of you who know Chelsea, this is her brother Bacardi. He is so reserved and docile. Bless this little boys heart! I can't imagine what he went through to make him so timid and left feeling vulnerable. But he is beginning to warm up to his caregivers, and he LOVES going on walks with his runmates Aurora and Carla. Soon we will be working him up to outings and sleepovers!

Ramone is a short little man in a big dog's body! And oh is he CUTE!!! Ramone is 3 years old Basset/ Terrier mix who came from a home that had him since he was a puppy. They were moving and could not take him where they were going, so he now resides at the Fairway with us! He does have some guarding issues with high value treats, so if he goes to a home with children, it is recommended they be over the age of 12 years. This guy is full of personality! And so very lovable! Come visit him, won't you.

What a great pup Curio is! Now at just 9 months old (Oct 2009), Curio has come out of his shell and is eager to meet every new person that comes to visit him at the Fairway. Curio was originally picked up on the reservation near by, and is currently enjoying his days playing with Dean and Ramone in his run, while Bronnie keeps all of them in line (kind of the mother hen of the bunch!). Curio is great with other dogs and as well as children. And he is oh so loving! He would make a great addition to any family!

Bad picture of this beautiful boy! While its still cute, it does not do him justice. He is so handsome, and quite a wiggler! He wants to be right up next to you, so it was really hard to get a good shot of him. Scooter is an absolute love! He came from the same hoarding situation in Texas as Benson. He is still very skinny, but we are putting the weight on. This little guy is so cute! He is a bit hand shy and nervous of quick movements, but he is SOOOOOOO affectionate! He would gladly just lay on top of you all day if you would just pet and talk to him.

Codota is a WONDERFUL 7 year old boy! He was brought to Best Friends by a couple who live in Las Vegas. The couples sister gave them Codota when she suddenly had to move. Unfortunately they found out Codota could not live with cats, so they had to give him up. This guy is so lovable! He loves people and also likes other dogs, although he meets them nervously at first. Codota was not sure of Simbah AT ALL when we first introduced them. A week later, they are the best of buddies!

April

What an awesome, quirky little girl Miss April is! April is a 4 year old Hound mix who was kept on a short chain in a small yard before coming to Best Friends. She does not have very good doggie skills, and tends to act defensively when meeting new dogs. She is getting better however, since being introduced to her runmates Tiberious and Roscoe. April is one of those dogs who enjoys "walking herself". Every time we put a leash on her, it becomes a game to see who will be walking who. But if you ignore the tug of war and just walk, she eventually gives it up.

April also has trouble when she is required to walk on new surfaces. Since she was chained outside her whole life, the only thing she felt beneath her feet was dirt. So coming into the octagon for the first time was a real challenge for her. She has since gotten use to the concrete floors here, but anything new seems very odd to her and she'll flatten out to do a belly crawl across the new surface. Getting into cars is also strange to her. She loves going on sleepovers, but often we have to give her a boost up because she is afraid to jump into the vehicle herself. April has no problems being picked up though. See loves people, and loves hugs and kisses!

Enzo

Enzo first arrived at Best Friends in June of 2005. He was found wandering behind Dogtown's Clinic looking pittifully lost. He was considered semi feral when he first arrived, but through the hard work and committment of the many Caregivers he has had over the years, Enzo has really come out of his shell! Enzo still gets nervous when he is in unfamiliar surroundings, but he loves going on walks and outings with the volunteers who come to see him.

Enzo is a 6 year old Flat Coat Collie mix, and he is most definitely a 'herder'. Any time we introduce someone new to Enzo's run, he feels the need to nip at their heels if they are runnning the fence or if they try to leave the run without him. Enzo had hip surgery a couple of years ago and twice a week we take him to hydrotherapy to keep his muscles strong. Enzo is also terrified of thunderstorms!

Dixie

Dixie.... what a LOVE! Dixie was born in 2000 and came to us from a shelter in L.A. back in 2002. I honestly don't know how she has not been snatched up yet! She is so sweet and loving with people, but she is a bit picky with the doggie friends she meets. She generally does well with one other doggie companion as long as it is a male. So far she has shown no affection for other females though! And sorry.... no cats for this girl either.

Reba

Reba is a 4 year old border collie/ pointer mix. She reminds me of a miniature "Speckles" but with longer hair! We got Reba from Kanab Animal Control where she was dropped off by her previous owner. She is nervous when she is in new surroundings, and startles easily by quick movements and loud noises. But in just 1 day she has warmed up to her caregivers, so it's only a matter of time for this sweet girl. Reba is such a sweet girl and she loves going for walks with visitors. Her runmate Baja seems to be quite smitten with her!
