Kate Made Blankets
...and adopted a cat!

"Kate Benjamin showed up to the Kitty Tour heavily armed with cage-sized padded blankets she made for all the kitties and left with a sweet girl who was really grateful to go home and leave the hub-bub of the adoption event behind."

Read the full story on the Nye County Cat Rescue campaign here.

Kate, we can't thank you enough for making all those beautiful blankies and giving Flora a wonderful home!

Kate, do you mind sharing the recipe for these blankets? These would be awesome to make and distribute to area rescues - (I'm in Texas). IF they aren't too difficult... I'm not much of a seamstress, but oh my gosh, the picture of you with all those blankets for those happy kitties is awesome. Thanks for posting!

Julie, I've Network mailed Kate to ask her to visit Crafty Critters and let us know how she made them. Lots of people want to know!

Kate's blankets look wonderful! I have made similar blankets for New York City shelter animals by following the directions here:
http://www.animalalliancenyc.org/supportus/comforters.htm

You do have to make sure your rescue/shelter is set up to use them - but they are great - and even help animals get adopted! (You can read more at the link above).

Mishkat,

Thank you so much for that link! That pattern looks very much like what Kate did! I'm going to have to try that. It looks quite simple!

I'll add that link to both the Sewing folder and the Quilting folder on the Resources page, since it fits both methods.

Hello everyone! Thanks so much for your kind words! It was certainly my pleasure to make the blankets and I'm so glad that Flora now lives with me and the rest of my furry crew.

That pattern is exactly the way I made the blankets. I agree that it is important to add the inner quilting stitch to keep the batting in place when washing. I used fleece that I found on sale for $20 a bolt (usually $80!)

I love making things assembly line style, and since I made 100 blankets, I did large batches in steps, first cutting out all the fabric, then sewing the first three sides, then turning them right side out and inserting the batting, and finally sewing them closed and finishing with the inside stitching. Whew! It took many hours, but the kitties seemed to enjoy them.

Now I'm working on making some catnip stuffed toys with the scrap fabric and batting pieces!

Glad to have found this community!

Kate, it's so great to have you here! Thanks for the tips on the blanket-making.

What are your catnip toys like?
