I won't be attending the conference, as much as I would like to, but I have a question for anyone in the know: I see that the PetCo Foundation is a sponsor.

My folks live in San Diego county and used to shop at a PetCo in North County (Carmel Mountain Ranch). Mom told me today that she will no longer shop there and will drive further, to another pet store chain, because the PetCo has begun selling kittens.

Is PetCo still a sponsor for the conference? Did we know that they're selling kittens?

PetCo Stores and the PetCo Foundation are different companies. I do not know of any PetCo stores in our area selling kittens. They do provide room for rescue groups to hold adoption days.

It turns out that the kittens and cats my mom heard were from a rescue but in no manner I've ever heard of. They aren't brought to the store for adoption events. They live in the store which means constant caging and no socialization. It is my opinion that this is not rescue; this is warehousing.

For shame PetCo.

Moonvine, thank you for telling me the two are separate. I shall research this. I suspect the average person doesn't know this because of the similiarity of the names.

The local rescue group that I volunteer with uses the cat area at our PetCo to showcase their cats. They rotate the kitties out on a regular basis, so none are there more than a week or so and then they get a break in a foster home. Our volunteers visit them daily to clean the area and socialize the cats too.

PetCo very generously donates not only the space, but also the litter and (I think) the food. Without this venue, our foster only group would have a tough time getting these cats the exposure they need to find loving homes. In addition, PetCo allows us to have weekly adoption events at their store and donates food to the group for the other animals that we help. We are grateful for their support.

southerndogmom: The PetCo Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3). PetCo stores are a for-profit business. They are linked in some ways, but are not the same legal entity.

I'm not sure how having cats in cages at PetCo for adoption is any different than having cats in cages at the dog pound for adoption.

The cats housed at PetCo have a tendency to be adopted out much more quickly than those in foster homes, because they are there and can be seen during hours of operation.
