Pet behavior : Rescue Dog Causing Problems

I have a great dane/lab mix who has a history of severe separation anxiety. I am not sure of his exact age but guess that he is around 7 - 9 yrs - I rescued him about 3 years ago. We spent our first year together with him going everywhere with me to prevent his damage to the doors in his efforts to escape. He was finally able to stay home alone when my partner and I moved in together and her pug made great company for Quinn. It has been close to 2 years since he has caused any problems or shown any signs of panic. Recently, he has started acting up again, but in a different way. Over the past month he has ingested 2 of my boots, tore into a friend's diaper bag, eaten the plastic turtle food jar, pulled wood from the fireplace and tore that up, completely ingested the leather on my blackberry case and other such random acts. He has done this all when we have left him alone and he shows no such behavior when we are home. I am unsure if this is related to his history of separation anxiety or something different. Any thoughts/advice would be helpful.

Every rescuer knows that many well loved and truly missed pets become part of the homeless animal system because the saddened Guardian just does not know the resources available to help bring their beloved pet back home (eg: Microchips). Not only is this reality creating an uncertain fate for the lost pet, that lost pet is filling a needed space in a no kill rescue which means a truly homeless animal will die in a county shelter. This group can possibly create the needed resource for our community to help more lost pets return safely to their loving home and therefore save a life of a truly homeless animal.

I am pleased to announce our 1st meeting on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 beginning at 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm which will facilitate creating a network for our local animal advocates.

Many times a pet's unwanted behavior is the reason for an animal becoming homeless and discarded when a simple solution was available if only the Guardian had located the resource with the needed information. This group can possibly create that needed resource for our community.

Working Together for Cincinnati's Animals : Jackson needs a home!

This one year old Louisville, Kentucky rescue is in need of an immediate home!

When his last owners moved out of their rental home, this sweet little fellow was left abandoned in the backyard with nothing but a ripped-open bag of dog food. He was found severely underweight and ill. Thanks to our friends at the Shamrock Foundation, caring neighbors, and a volunteer for Best Friends Network, "Jackson" was taken to a local veterinarian and updated on all of his shots and treated for an intestinal infection.

"Jackson" is very social, very friendly and absolutely loves to play with other dogs. He enjoys toys and playing fetch and going on walks. He has not been seen around cats. Now that he is back to a healthy 33 pound weight, he is much less frightened—but still shows fear from loud noises. He panics at first when entering an enclosed space, but is quick to settle down and relax. Honestly, he is seems so grateful to have company, it is heartbreaking to see his sad face when you leave.

He will need a fenced in yard. It is unknown if he is housebroken or not, but because of his age and temperament, it is certain training will not be problematic. He currently jumps when excited, as he has been so lonely for so long, so if he is to be around toddlers, training will definitely be required. He does not bark—a very, quiet, loving, lonely pup.

He also enjoys riding in the car—he sits down and relaxes. This good little boy would make a great addition to any loving home!

Cincinnati Rescue, TNR and Transport : 2 Cats Need a Home

2 Cats are in need of a new home:
a neutered male, approximately 1 year old and a spayed female, approximately 6 months old.

They are indoor/outdoor cats and have their claws. The male loves to be outside but has some litter box problems while in the house.

The person who has them cannot care for them any longer.

If anyone knows of a foster home or rescue group that could take these cats please send me a network message.

Andrew has generously donated the signage on his racecar to Best Friends in an effort to generate funds for the animals. It works like this: People can donate the amount that they would like to give based on the amount of laps that the Best Friends #5 racecar completes during the 2007 Indy Pro Series racing schedule. Donors can participate for the entire season, or just one race.

Cincinnati Rescue, TNR and Transport : Milford Cat Rescuer Needs Volunteer Help

A woman in the Milford area who manages feral cat colonies needs some volunteer help:

The feral cat colonies that she manages are in Mount Aubern near Christ Hospital. She goes to see them in the evenings, because there is somebody (I think a local business owner but I'm not sure) who doesn't want the cats around. She has personally adopted many of them and trapped/neutered/and released most of the others (but there are always some who evade the traps). She needs somebody to volunteer to feed them and check on them one evening a week, on a weekday evening (apparently she has weekends covered). She says folks helping need to get there some time after 8-8:30 PM so that the owner of the local business won't be there and object to the cats being fed. She will provide the food.

I am awaiting direct contact information from this rescuer. If you are able to help please respond to this post with the day of the week that you are available and your contact information and I will pass it along.

I have also found some good info googling low cost spay/neuter in the Cincinnati area. I am guilty of having extended family with unfixed animals so I did some research for them! ;)

Thanks for your email. We would be happy to help you with traps...we have 6 available right now (no charge to lend out) but just call ahead of time to make sure we have them here. Our prices are $30 for all cats male or female with no charges for pregnant/in heat/cryptorchid. These are our standard prices. Vaccines are available if you would like them...Rabies is $8 and FVRCP or FELV are $12. We also have Revolution for $12/dose.

We do have limited funds available for anyone who qualifies as low-income based on gov't guidelines. We decide on a case by case basis.

Just give us a call when you are in town. We do not require appointments for ferals for 1 or 2 cats but if you think you are going to trap more than that; please let us know so we can plan.
