Plan of Action to Find a Lost Dog

In order to find a lost dog, the search should be organized and there should be one point person. We have developed this simple plan of action to help your organization find a lost dog. This checklist should create cohesiveness and a team approach to successfully find your lost dog. Accidents do happen, do not assign blame –it is counterproductive and distracts from the common mission. Communication is key. Please keep key people updated on a daily basis by either using email, phone tree or free conference call.

Assign one person for each duty or couple of duties:

Start Search – before you start your search, place a blanket that your dog or foster dog has used along with a dish of canned food or tasty human food where he/she was last seen

Call Animal Control, local shelters, police department, veterinarians and rescues, animal service busineses - make sure you have all current information about the lost dog (color of collar, tags, current picture, breed, etc).

Call your local highway department or public works department

Call either of the automatic calling services below to inform general public about lost dog (there is a charge)

Place ad in local and surrounding newspapers

Create flyer and print at least 500 copies (dependent on size of area) –Search and pass out flyers. Check out site: http://www.missingpetpartnership.org/recovery-posters.php

Call local chamber of commerce to get regional street map of area where dog is missing. Also go to googleearth.com to get an aerial view of the area. Or http://maps.yahoo.com

Divide map into sections and highlight. Assign each section to a volunteer to distribute flyers. Use 3 miles radius.

Also use separate map to record sightings of the dog. Be sure to get time, date and exact location of the sighting. Suggestion: use an excel spreadsheet to record sightings.

Contact your local ACO and/or shelter for a dog trap. Make sure the trap is large enough to fit your dog.

Search dogs

Place something that has your dog’s scent in a plastic bag – in case there is a need to bring in a search dog.

Don’t give up! Many dogs are found weeks or months after they are lost.

It's a party for the pets!

Walk Begins: 10:00AM

Eclipse, the trick horse, will be on hand to amaze you with his talent and a super-special mystery guest just might make an appearance!

Pets and their human companions are invited to join us as we demonstrate our concern for homeless animals and raise money for WCHS. All animals lovers are invited...with or without a pet.

AFTER THE WALK...PRIZES!

Join us as we express our gratitude for a job well done, and honor the top walkers bringing in the most pledges

WE HAVE A GREAT COURSE!

The 3-mile or 2-mile Walk will begin at 10 a.m. (all walkers leave at the same time) from Jackson Park in Jackson. Water for the animals and their companions will be provided along the route.

FREE NAIL CLIPPING FOR DOGS

We'll have a groomer on hand to provide free nail trimming, trainers to offer advice, a pet bakery just for fun, and much more. We'll have a variety of vendors, breed rescue groups to meet...and food to enjoy.

LOW COST MICRO-CHIPPING

The shelter will be offering low-cost microchipping to Walk participants interested in a permanent form of identification for their pets.

SHELTER ALUMNI

Show off your best friend from WCHS. Animals adopted from our shelter will proudly wear a special bandana signifying saved lives and second chances.

THERE ARE A FEW RULES!

Walkers under 13 must be accompanied by an adult
All dogs must have current license and rabies shots.
Pets must be on a leash at all times
You must clean up after your pets.
Participants must sign a release form.

Animals Say Cheese for CCWC

Citizens Corps of Washington County will give pet owners an opportunity to help their pets be better prepared for an emergency with a pet photo I.D. card at the Walk for Animals. CCWC volunteers will take I.D.-sized photos of pets and their owners for a $2 contribution to CCWC. Pet owners are encouraged to keep the I.D. in their emergency supplies kit in case the owner and their pet are separated during an emergency. The Pet ID also allows CCWC volunteers to refresh their skills and test the credentialing system, which will be called into action to credential volunteers during an emergency.

Puppy Mill Protests all over WI - Bill to regulate

This is important because the WI legislature looks like they will finally regulate in Wisconsin - a bill has been introduced with several sponsors. You will find all the info on the site WI Puppy Mill Project. Use the link above to get there.

If you show up at one demonstration - it will make a difference -- the bill will only pass if they think we have the numbers.

This is the culmination of ten years of efforts that seemed futile. The first protest is tomorrow in Janesville and in Hales Corners.

Please make one more effort to get your Representative to add their name as a sponsor of the bill and show up at a protest.

Think how many fires there are at the mills where pups and moms burn alive.

Carlton is a 6 year old black and white ,neutered male cat who came into our local shelter on March 2, 2009.Carlton became sick with an URI, I ended up fostering him and paying for all of his vet bills. The shelter wanted to euthanize him saying he wasn't worth the trouble. When Carlton came to my house he weighed only 5 pounds. He has completely recovered. But Carlton will sometimes have a bit of an attitude and can get nippy or even bite. I think it's mostly due to fear and he may have been abused(Carlton was a stray). Carlton does well with older childern and other cats. He enjoys being pet, chin and ear scratches. He loved the climbing tower we have and enjoys watching the birds out of the patio door.Carlton now has ringworm which I tried treating with antifungal cream, but that didn't work so now Carlton is back at the shelter, and Iam afraid they will euthanize him.If anyone has any suggestions or ideas as far as getting him adopted or even getting him out of the shelter before the ring worm has cleared up please let me know ASAP, Thanks.

UPDATE: I received an e-mail from the shelter director today, who said carlton was finished with the lymdyp treatments and they are going to move him into a kennel in adoptable. But Carlton I believe is starting to go kennel crazy. So if he does not do well I have the option of fostering him until he gets adopted which could be a year or more. But I am not able to foster anything else while I have him. My guess is that if I don't foster him or even if I can not get to the the shelter quickly enough he will be euthanized (the shelter hsas done that to me before called me to pick up one of my foster babies, and five minutes after calling me euthanized them). If anyone has any suggestions, ideas, or knows someone who might be intrested in Carlton please let me know ASAP - HIS LIFE MAY DEPEND ON YOUR HELP! Thank You, and Carlton Thanks You!

Willow is 10 years old, a male shorthair. He is not at all like his brother Ridley. Willow is somewhat fearful of people and animals, and tends to hide quite a bit. He has a bit of a dark side, and has a history of "violence" at the vet.

Still, he is a sweet boy to me.

Ridley is a 12 year old male cat. He is so affectionate, loves his mom (sleeps on her pillow at night), is accepting of new animals and people. He carries on "conversations" with people all the time...he must have the last word! Oh, he also comes when called.

Ridley is just an all around great kitty. And cute too!

He also loves to munch on lettuce.................

Humane Milwaukee works with Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control (MADACC) to find homes for animals that are sometimes considered unadoptable. Many of the animals have to overcome difficulties before being offered for adoption.

The group adopts out their animals from the upper level of Southridge Mall in Greenfield, Wisconsin. They are having financial difficulaties and cannot take in new animals at this time.

Wisconsin Helping Other States in Need : Please help us save Spike!

We are trying to save Spike. He is a Chihuahua mix that Eddie found as a stray friday night at work. Thru a lot of dedication to find his owners, not only did I discover that he was intentionally dumped, but I also learned that he was a Hurricane Katrina victim. We immediately decided not to dump Spike off to the next family, as he'd been traumatized enough. We took him to our vet and had him checked out. I got the call this morning that he tested positive for heartworm. It can cause congestive heart failure in dogs, amongst other things. This little guy is a survivor. He was able to brave the streets of Portland for over 2 weeks, traveling from Beaverton to NE Portland. He was also brave enough to survive a horrible natural disaster. He has warmed his way into our hearts very quickly, and has made himself a home with our other 2 dogs. The financial aspect is a little hard, as the treatment is going to run us about $750. Please help if at all possible! Thanks everyone!

Animals in Need-Wisconsin : Need help with problem barking dogs

I am hoping someone can help me, we have 8 dogs that I love dearly but unfortunately my neighbor does not. They do not bark all the time but they do when they get excited and then of course it is hard to get that many dogs to be quiet. Well my neighbor is a pain and I would love to get rid of him but seeing I can not think of a legal way to do that I seriously need help. He is unfortunately friends with the town constable and so now he is using that to get me in troulbe. We live out in the country so most people don't mind animals out here but he is a pain well you know where. So now I don't know what to do. I have tried the barking collars but that burned one of the dogs really bad so I won't do that every again. We also tried the ultrasonic bark systems but that made them bark. They are not bad dogs but some stuff will make them bark and then I have a problem. Right now the constable said if he comes back again he is going to fine me $500 every time he comes back . I can afford to care for my dogs fine but not fines like that. I really want to keep them if I can but don't have any idea on what to do. If I do have to get rid of them I want them to go somewhere where I know they wont be put down because after my two human kids these guys are my babies so I really need some help and ideas please.

Wisconsin Helping Other States in Need : Dog-Friendly Chow Mix Seeks Forever Home – Please Cross-Post!

Smokey is an active and healthy 6-years-young Chow/Shepherd/Rotti mix. He has been with 11th Hour Rescue for over 2 years. He is currently at our shelter, but is occasionally fostered by a volunteer with 6 other dogs. If you want a buddy for your dogs, Smokey’s the best! Smokey LOVES other dogs (he knows to be gentle with smaller ones) and is great with his foster parents, however he has “guarding issues”. Trying to “protect” his home and owners has lead to biting. He has NEVER gone after his fosterers and trusts them 100%. His caregiver can take food away from him; check his teeth, paws, mouth; give him a bath…pretty much handle him however they want. He is also crate-trained and housebroken.

Smokey is a “big puppy” who lives to play with and meet new dogs. Yard time is fun time for Smokey! His wariness about trusting people stems from low self-esteem and past abandonment. He does not show outwardly aggressive body language when nervous, which means that he would require a dog savvy home. Once Smokey bonds with you, he would never go after you – and he bonds quickly. His forever family would increase his confidence and trust as a “nervous aggression” dog. Someone who knows when company visits, he must be crated or put in another room to avoid the “guarding” behavior.

He is a great dog that deserves a chance at having a loving home, because he has so much love and loyalty to give to you!

Smokey is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccinations.
