A public hearing on primate research from the EU Science Committee on sixth November has been criticized for disregarding scientific evidence of its limitations and ignoring the potential of advanced alternative techniques. The hearing was requested by the European Commission in light of their proposal at the start of November for the review of Directive 86/609 which controls animal experiments. They are under pressure to introduce a timetable for the phasing out of primate experiments, an intention already backed with Written Declaration 40/2007 last year which had one of the highest ever total of signatures. Despite this their proposal only includes a ban on the testing of Great Apes and wild caught monkeys while experiments on other primates, nearly all of the 10,500 yearly used in Europe, is still allowed. Significantly the ban on Great Apes has a loophole preventing it from being final. This has been described as a missed opportunity by many leading scientists and welfare organizations.

Most of the scientific procedures with primates, mainly macaques, are for drug development, neurological research and safety testing of vaccines. For drug development, human microdosing methods such as accelerator mass spectrometry are proven replacements. They have the added advantage of being useful at the earliest stages of research and studies have shown that they are highly successful in predicting the effects of drugs even at low dosages. They have been approved by the European Medicines Evaluation Agency and are employed by many of the major pharmaceutical companies. Other alternatives available that need more support include molecular methods for vaccine testing and magnetic resonance imaging for neurological research. Still more are In Vitro, using samples of human skin in test tubes to give rapid results, microdialysis and human genetic studies.

There has been limited success from research into major human diseases using primates. The results have not translated well to benefit humans. For example, twenty five years of using primates for Aids research has failed to find treatments or cures. In fact, it is alternative technology that has produced the crucial breakthroughs in understanding this disease. Total replacement of primates is achievable with more research and development but the European Commission are resisting progress in favour of maintaining the status quo. Replacing primates in laboratories with alternatives is not simply a humane goal but a scientifically sound one.

One new technology improving rapidly is human neuroimaging according to a recent article published in the Neuroimage Journal. This article is a collaboration of some of the Britain's most respected professors who, realising that animal experiments were failing to deliver, discussed their replacement with the latest technology. Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry are one of the pioneers of brain imaging and are using it to produce results in the study of pain symptoms that years of animal research has not discovered.

The value of animal research is exaggerated by those who have an interest in its preservation. It uses artificial methodology not taking into account differences between human and non-human anatomy. For these reasons it is an unreliable way to investigate human diseases. The immense resources would be put to much more effective, efficient and humane use when redirected to alternative research more directly applicable to humans.

Our MEPs must realize that primate testing can be replaced with alternative technology, in the many cases when it has shown to be an improvement. When more investment is needed to develop these alternatives this must be made available. This issue must be addressed when the revision of Directive 86/609 is debated in parliament. They must also strive to ensure the first reading is completed before April next year, when all attention will focus on the June 2009 European Elections. If you agree this is urgent please contact your MEPs and tell them so.

Further information from
http://www.eceae.org
http://www.scienceroom.org/

Thank you for your time.

Tony G. of London, England

Animals in Need of Help : PETCONNECTION OF KANSAS CITY BEING ROBBED OFF BY A GRINCH!

PLEASE give this serious consideration - Pet Connection does so very much for the pet/animal rescue community (daily) without asking the public for help...find it within yourselfs to step-up in the time of need.. Yesterday, we were the victim of a crime that will have grave costs to our pets or for those that we are not able to rescue. Our trailer and all the supplies for building 8 new dog and cat rooms was stolen. I am so sad, disappointed, and everyone at our facility is feeling a little defeated. Jason Huff and myself got most of the supplies donated and spent 2 days loading it all for TPC so that the cost would be minimal. Replacement value of our loss: $4000. We were going to start construction over Thanksgiving. Jason and I cancelled holiday plans with our families so that we could build these much needed life savers. Our Christmas gift to the homeless pets was an important one. We estimate that these rooms will help us successfully house and rescue 15-40 additional pets each month. Almost 70 percent of the rescued dogs at our facility were scheduled to be euthanized in area shelters simply because of space constraints.

If anyone can send additional funding for this project, we would really appreciate. If everyone we have helped this month, would send $5......that would be about $3000. If everyone on this list sent $5, that would be $35,000. We need help. Please send your pledge today. I know that together, we can make this horrible turn of events seem small.

If we do not receive a rally from our friends, we will not be able to complete the project until much later. I'm turning away about a hundred animals a month, please help me. We need these resources to be available as soon as possible. We needed them yesterday.

Please cross post to anyone that may be able to assist.

Animals in Need of Help : Urgent 2 Huskies Need Rescue in KY

PLEASE CROSS POST
I saved these poor babies once now they are in need of rescue again. I recieved a call from a lady out of town that said there were 2 red huskies at an animal shelter in KY that were set to be put to sleep, she said she had a rescue set up in Florida that would take them. So I went and pulled the dogs and took them to a kennel to be boarded until we could get transport set up for them to go to FL. We have been having a problem getting transport set up and the rescue fell through. I have to have them out of the kennel by Tuesday because of the coming holiday, the kennel is full. Please if you can possibly help find a rescue that is willing to take them I will drive them a couple of states in any direction. If I can not find them a place to go they will have to go back to the shelter. I have no room here I already have 9 dogs with us and the limit here in town is 5. I am pushing it already. Please if you or any rescue you know of has room for just one. Please cross post and send this to everyone you know these dogs are beautiful and deserve a second chance.
The pictures of the dogs are attached to this e-mail.
Description:
Tyee- Red male husky; he is neutered, utd on vaccines, and microchipped. No one cared. The neighbors saw him suffering, yet nobody did anything until it was too late. Someone had placed food by him, but by then he was too weak to even get up. Someone contacted (KZTV) a news station that stands up for people and animals alike.

Shepp was taken to animal control were he was cared for by the vets and staff there, I know for a fact, for I was able to see him from behind the glass on Friday afternoon. The tech, vets and staff that were there with him, treating him with such compassion and care. Shepp passed away later that afternoon, which was devastating to the vets and staff.

His will to live was there, he wagged his tail and even tried to lift his head. However his body couldn't take it, due to the extreme neglect he endured for a month. He left this life. (KZTV Action 10 News) has set up a site for Shepp they will remain attentive to this story .

What is needed is signatures on a petition started out for justice.

In these cases of cruelty it is often difficult to catch and charge those responsible. For one month.Shepp had no food, little or no water. There are many that are in dire need of help and it is appalling how far this went on.

Our VOICE can make all the difference...

Please take a moment, as hard as it is, please, view the video. It tears me apart, but to bear witness we shall speak out for those that cannot.

Thank you my dear friends. And please REPOST Shepp's story far and wide. That justice may prevail and to those who stood by and did nothing you must be held accountable as well. Many are wonderful with children and can be great fun to have around.
The mere fact that these greyhounds who are now redundant and are being put up for re-adoption by their owners/trainers prove that these racing dogs are viewed as disposable commoditites!!!

Please, if you have room in your home for another dog please consider adopting a greyhound today.
Please send this very special appeal to all your contacts across the UK for maximum coverage.
Many thanks for your support.
Greyhound Crusaders/SWAP team UK
We all make the difference

Animals in Need of Help : Urgent - Stolen dog please help (UK)

Urgent - Stolen dog please help (UK)
Tuesday, August 19, 2008 10:40 AM
From:
"Cornwall's Voice For Animals"

----- Original Message -----
From: South West Animal Protection
To: "Undisclosed-Recipient:;"@me.freeserve.com
Sent: Tuesday, August 19, 2008 8:16 AM
Subject: Urgent - Stolen dog please help (UK)

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY TO ALL UK CONTACTS ESPECIALLY THOSE IN THE SOUTH OF ESSEX (UK)

Urgent - Missing Dog - Stolen from the Essex area in the UK

Please see below the urgent appeal from the owners of 'Genie' a beautiful Lurcher cross (see photo left and also attached poster for full details) who was stolen from their van in Essex (UK) on the 10th August.

Any sightings please phone Kate or Gwain Theobald immediately on these numbers:
07894 647054
07970 571229
01322 278073

If you live in the South Essex area please could you print off the attached poster and circulate widely in your area, thanks.

Let's do everything we can to get this precious girl safely home.

Many thanks
SWAP team UK

----- Original Message -----
From: Lucinda Read
To: Action for Greyhounds (UK) ; greyhoundcrusaders@googlemail.com
Sent: Sunday, August 17, 2008 12:52 PM
Subject: Fw: Stolen dog please help

Lin, Helen,

Please would you send this message around as well.

Thank you
Lucinda

Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2008 1:17 PM
Subject: FW: Stolen dog please help
========================================
Subject: FW: Stolen dog please help

Please could you pass this on (it’s an E-mail that has been passed on to me…)

Thank you,

Love Christina

x

Please help I have had my dog stolen from my van in Essex if you live or know anyone that lives in the south of essex please could you print off the attached poster and stick it up around your area. She is around 18 months old. Dolly is given 3 injections and anti-biotic tablets to be given twice a day along with a special diet to build her weight back up slowly.

David has now made himself homeless to care for Dolly because he already has a dog, baby and girlfriend at home, and Dolly simply does not get on with my own dog Lulu. HE IS SLEEPING ON HIS FRIENDS FLOOR TO CARE FOR HER.

Dolly has a huge open wound on her leg and needs urgent surgery to her leg and, ear and head, this is due to take place next week. The vet has estimated it will cost between £350-£700, which is a big leap!

David has chipped Dolly already.

Dolly can be re-homed and is already toilet trained, walks well on the lead and is learning to sit stay etc. She is not hyperactive when with people, and is easy to have around. It’s just when she gets left alone or is with other dogs that she is a pain in the ass.

It’s funny that it was man who has hurt her and caused her physical and psychological pain and yet it is our attention she still craves.... would we be as forgiving as people?

If you want to help Dolly, you can do so very easily:

1)Send love and support.

2)Invite as many people as you can to the Facebook group 'Save Dolly' where you will also find regular updates

3)Send money, (make cheques payable to the Victoria Park Village Fundraisers and send to 487 Roman Road, London, E3 5LX). The European Chemicals Agency, based in Helsinki, Finland, is responsible for managing the registration process. REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation & restriction of CHemicals) is the world’s biggest ever chemical testing programme expected to test thousands of chemicals on millions of animals over the next 11 years. Before 1981 in Europe chemicals were put on the market without being tested by legal requirement. REACH aims to correct this by testing the 30,000 or so chemicals imported or manufactured in excess of 1 tonne a year but still relies heavily on animal testing. This is unacceptable considering the advances that have been made in new technology in recent years.

Preparing for REACH, Europe needs the co-operation of industry and this is proving a problem with many giving priority to commercial concerns rather than consumer safety. The European Commission estimates the cost of REACH to the chemical industry will be between €2.8bn and €5.2bn. But it also pointed out that with this investment money will still be saved over time and the benefits to human health were worth it. This belief is valid provided the testing methods used are the best available. The task is too important to allow for inefficiency. In theory, animal testing should only be done when no better alternative exists. Validated alternatives are considered at least the equal of animal tests but the European Commission's list of approved methods does not include non-animal techniques that were approved for scientific validity in 2007 by the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods ( ECVAM ) . This delay has been criticized by the European parliament MEPs because it will encourage companies to continue using animal tests when validated alternatives based on human biology are available. ECVAM does important work and they must be given the support and resources they need if they are to achieve what we all want - a complete system of modern tests to reliably find and eliminate all dangerous chemicals from our environment.

The chemical companies of Europe may not use the latest technology to determine the toxicity of the substances they use when required to do so by the REACH regulations. Citizens of Europe can help to make sure this does not happen by contacting their own national politicians and insisting they support the use of validated alternatives as a legal requirement for the testing of these chemicals.

British Citizens can take action now to improve the standard of testing of many of these chemicals. Toxic chemicals are used in household products and must be tested under the REACH regulations. Protecting our health and environment means testing these with scientific alternatives we can trust. The UK Government must stop issuing licences to test household products and their ingredients on animals. Early Day Motion 1215 asks them to do just this so that only validated non-animal methods based on human biology will be used to determine the toxicity of these substances. Ideally the support of 200 MPs is required if this is to be effective.

You can examine the content of EDM 1215 and see who has signed it at
http://edmi.parliament.uk

Started in 2003, the Humane Household Product Standard (HHPS) is the only international scheme which guarantees a product has not been animal tested because companies need to provide proof. With Its own logo, it enables consumers to easily identify products that have not been tested on animals.

To learn more about the HHPS go to http://www.gocrueltyfree.org/

The RSPCA have endorsed a petition, "Take Action", which asks the British government to work towards ending the use of animals in experiments by replacing them with humane alternatives.

Please sign this RSPCA petition at http://www.rspca.org.uk/
(In the current campaigns section)

For more information visit:-
http://ec.europa.eu/environment/
http://www.eceae.org

Thank You

Tony

All Around the World : Zimbabwe: ZCTF Report 15th June 2008

----- Original Message -----
From: Johnny Rodrigues
Sent: Sunday, June 15, 2008 8:11 PM
Subject: ZCTF Report 15th June 2008

ZIMBABWE CONSERVATION TASK FORCE

15th June 2008

As the economic situation rapidly deteriorates in Zimbabwe, we are receiving reports that poaching is escalating at an alarming rate.

Five white rhino have recently been killed by poachers. 3, including a baby, were shot in the Chivero National Park. Prior to this, the rhino population in Chivero has always been very well protected and these are the first rhino that have ever been killed in this area. The other 2 were also shot in a National Park but we have not yet confirmed the exact location.

We are receiving reports that elephants are being shot regularly in the Kariba area. One informant reported that he personally knows of 18 that have been shot this year.

A fortnight ago, poachers shot a zebra and 3 cows at Imire Safari Ranch.

The number of animals caught in wire snares is increasing and there is a shortage of the drug needed to tranquilize the animals in order to remove the snares. Many animals are therefore dying an agonizing, lingering death.

Some elephants that are part of the Presidential Herd in Hwange have been sighted with wire snares on them. As the tranquilizer is not readily available, it is not possible to remove the snares and some of these elephants are now presumed dead.

In 2005, we raised funds to purchase 12 vials of M99, the drug required to tranquilize the larger animals. One vial is sufficient to tranquilize approximately 4 elephants or possibly 8 buffalo. Thanks to the people and organizations who assisted us with funds, numerous animals of all species have been saved but our supplies are now depleted.

These are photos of a small selection of the snare removals that have been carried out using this drug.

SNARE REMOVED FROM A ZEBRA SNARE REMOVED FROM A BUFFALO

SNARE REMOVED FROM AN ELEPHANT

The drug, which is not available in Zimbabwe, costs R2 200 or USD300 per vial and we are urgently appealing for assistance in replenishing our stocks. This major tragedy worsens daily. Animals do not exist within defined borders and so we have prepared a major action campaign with a ten thousand piece global mailing contacting government officials, TV and print media and international travel agents. We trust that we will have your full support and participation.

The ALLIANCE, presently supported by nearly 100 international ngo’s and the list is growing, urgently needs you to CROSS POST TO THE MOON & BACK, (Bcc) the press release, found at the very bottom of the page, to each and every internet address in your files, personal friends and family, animal activists and business associates. The recipients of this multi national campaign should also be inclusive of your print and TV media, all government officials, Face Book, My Space contacts, regardless of venue. Of the utmost importance, is sending (Bcc) this same Press Release to this block of Balkan government officials.

(just copy and paste the block of addresses into your Bcc space)

office@president.hr

cabinet.minister@mvpei.hr

eu.political.issues@mypei.hrodnosi@mvpei.he

1.division@mvpei.hr

Western.europe@mypei.he

info@htz.hr

glasnogovornik@vlada.he

office@mps.hr

predsjednik@vlada.hr

odnosi@mvpei.he

office@mps.hr

With heartfelt thanks and respect:

GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS AND PROTECTION (GAARP)

Marijo Anne Gills US (www.wagny.org/www.wagny.net) Mark Johnson UK , howlingwolfmoon@blueyonder.co.ukMary Alice Pollard CVA UK moonflower.uk@virgin.net Maria Daines UK marD367@aol.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEDIA CONTACTS

UNITED STATES : Marijo Gillis New York : Tel. 212 427 0587 Mobile 646 284 – 1945 E-Mail Marijo@wagny.org (www.wagny.org / www.wagny.net)

EUROPE : Mark Johnson United Kingdom : Tel. 44 01474 354992 Mobile 44 7947 997110 E-Mail howlingwolfmoon@blueyonder.co.uk

BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE

Witnesses report that countless, abandoned, shelter animals are padlocked behind barbed wire and have been left to die of starvation by officials in the Croatian town of Benkovac on the Dalmatian Coast . Resorting to cannibalization in a fight for survival, the abandoned animals at the Benkovac municipal shelter are representative of the tens of thousands of voiceless victims suffering a similar fate throughout the Balkans.

Officials are hell bent on thwarting the implementation of humane animal welfare initiatives aimed at resolving the nations mounting abandoned animal population. Domestic and farmed animal neglect and abuse, a story without end in the Balkans, has Croatia assuming a pivotal position on the global stage.

Animal caregivers appear to be fighting a losing battle against government authorities who have assumed a brutal stance on animal population control. Officials are prohibiting the implementation of humane action programs and are authorizing the physical neglect of countless sick and dying animals housed in the filthy, municipal shelter in Benkovac. Officials have almost succeeded in destroying the spirit and efforts of humane workers as well.

Mr. Dinko Ozakovic has fed and watered the animals and cleaned the facility for years and at times has used his own money for provisions and veterinary care. Fired for lodging complaints against the inhumane conditions at the shelter, Ozakovic and others have been locked out of the shelter by local Mayor Mirko Erstic, and shelter directors. Ozakovic states: “my heart is breaking for these innocent creatures who have been brutally sentenced to death by starvation. I see them suffering and crying through the fence and I want to die as well”.

Although supported by a growing coalition of international animal welfare organizations, Croatian citizens appear to be “barking up the wrong tree” as government officials thumb their noses at global pleas for humane intervention. Successful programs ( trap, neuter/spay, vaccination, micro chipping and return to safe haven neighborhoods) are being implemented around the world. Concerned Croatian citizens state that “it is about time to join the “party”.

The world is in shambles; fragmented and marginalized by war, greed, corruption and the heartbreaking debris from man made and natural disasters has ricocheted off the hearts of the compassionate. The animals are not immune.

The international member organizations of the Global Alliance for Animal Rights and Protection call upon the influential, international press to highlight the atrocities in the Balkans. Spokespersons, Mark Johnson of London and Marijo Gillis, a political lobbyist with WAG New York , founding members of the European and American Alliance teams state: “We need to trigger a united public protest, & capture the attention & positive intervention of the Croatian government. Suffering & death by ignorance and inhumanity is not acceptable. Hopefully the investigative press will ignore the whitewashing of the truth by government troubleshooters. “

GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS AND PROTECTION (GAARP)

A Partial List of Voting Supporters.

Welfare for Animals Global (WAG) – United States of America

www.wagny.org
www.wagny.net
www.wagny.net/Greek_Support
www.wagny.net/Egypt
www.wagny.net/Ghosts_of_the_City

http://wagny.wordpress.com

North Kent Animal Welfare (NKAW) - MARK JOHNSON England , Uk

Eastern Daylight
Subj: Anyone with contacts in Scotland? please pass on - Common seals.

FOR PUBLICATION OR BROADCAST ON TUESDAY 27th MAY 2008

Scottish salmon farmers are being targeted in a campaign against the shooting of seals. Animal Concern and the Save Our Seals Fund have put up a £1,000 reward for information leading to a successful prosecution under the Conservation of Seals Act.

From the first of June until the end of August it is illegal for fish farmers to shoot Common Seals unless they have a special Government license. Civil servants in Edinburgh have indicated that they will not issue such licenses to fish farmers as they can protect their stock using tensioned anti predator nets and sonic seal scarers.

It is twenty-two years since Animal Concern secured the one and only successful prosecution under the 1970 Conservation of Seals Act. Since then the Scottish Executive have ruled that fish farmers are no longer exempt from the close seasons for killing seals and any fish farmer who kills a common seal during the next three months will be breaking the law.

John Robins, Secretary to both Animal Concern and the Save Our Seals Fund, states:

"In the past it was almost impossible to take legal action against a fish farmer for shooting seals. With this new interpretation of the law there is a very good chance that we will now be able to obtain a successful prosecution. All we need is the evidence and that is why we have put up this £1,000 reward. In most European countries seals are protected but in Scotland they are persecuted. With the help of the public we intend to give Common Seals the protection they have been denied until now. We also hope to make shoppers aware that when they buy Scottish salmon they are paying for bullets to shoot seals. That’s too high a price to pay for a bit of fish.”

EDITORS NOTES: A copy of our Reward poster is attached. For further info/comment please contact John Robins on 01389841111 or mobile 07721605521. Also note that this interpretation of the Conservation of Seals Act 1970 is not, as suggested in an article in one of Sunday’s newspapers, a new thing which is about to be brought in by the Scottish Government but has actually been the position for some time as indicated in the e-mail below sent to us on 5/9/2006. This makes it quite clear that a fish farmer who shoots a common seal between 1st June 2008 and 31st August 2008 will, according to the Scottish Government, be committing a criminal offence. The problem is that this ruling has not been properly implemented or policed. We hope our reward will allow us to test this in court this summer.

Needs, news and events for the animals of Europe : Bosnia: Situation worsened at Vucijak Farm - Please help these horses!!

----- Original Message -----
From: Last Angel
Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2008 4:47 PM
Subject: Fw: These horses are dying!! We already know that 3 poor foals have died but there are also 4 foals in a critical condition, we have just had this update from NOA:

At the time of NOA's last assessment, 4 foals were in critical condition, and will be unlikely to recover in the conditions at the farm. Bad news is expected for these foals. There are also grave concerns for mares in foal close to their due date. NOA have been waiting for a grant from WSPA which would have allowed them access to care for the horses 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately the banks have had administrative problems and the grant has not yet been received.

Further problems have been reported today 28 May 2008 which could take a further week to resolve. Add to this the fact that the temperatures in Bosnia are currently ranging from 31-36 degrees centigrade and will only get hotter. NOA had planned to have access to the farm before the temperature rose to these levels, but due to the administrative errors, the horses will be left to suffer and starve in the heat for another week without any help. Even when the grant from WSPA finally arrives, it will not be nearly enough to care for these animals for any more than a short time.

Last Angel Equine Defence has set up a fund for the Vucijak Farm horses via Paypal. Please! Donate any amount you can! These horses are dying. Now!!

Thank you

Click here to donate: Last Angel Fund for Vucijak Farm Horses. All money will be forwarded to NOA. Accounts are available to view on request. If you would prefer to donate via bank transfer or cheque, please contact Last Angel Equine Defence email address: admin@lastangel.org.uk

Please sign and forward urgent petition for the horses: Petition to help save starving horses at Vucijak Farm - h?t?t?p?:?/?/?w?w?w?.?t?h?e?p?e?t?i?t?i?o?n?s?i?t?e?.?c?o?m?/?1?/?h?e?l?p?-?t?h?e?-?s?t?a?r?v?i?n?g?-?l?i?p?i?z?z?a?n?e?r?-?h?o?r?s?e?s?-?a?t?-?v?u?c?i?j?a?k?-?f?a?r?m?-?b?o?s?n?i?a?

90 Lipizzaner Horses at Vucijak Farm in Bosnia are being kept in appalling conditions, suffering from starvation and fatigue. The horses are dying. These horses need our help urgently. Three foals have already died due to starvation and conditions at the farm more are expected to die in the days to come.

For more impact, please send an email to the UK and USA ambassadors to Bosnia. On the other hand, the Ministry of Agriculture of Republika Srpska was the perfect ministry for the money laundry of the Republika Srpska yearly budget funds, the money would end up in the hands of ruling leadership without incriminating traces or evidence. Moreover, the farm Vucijak was important part in this money laundry scam since it was on the budget list of the ministry.

"Out of 80 millions KM, 60 millions KM will dissappear in the hands of politicians..." - citation of insider.

Hence, while the farm managment did their scam, starving and neglecting the horses and trying to lure the donations in, keeping the farm in constant need of aid and assitance. The ministry could not do anything to prevent it or help the horses because then the farm managment could talk and reveal the money laundry scam of the ministry,( the farm staff would talk).

For latest updates and documents, please visit NOA's information portal for the horses of Vucijak Farm: NOA Vucijak Farm Horses - h?t?t?p?:?/?/?s?i?t?e?s?.?g?o?o?g?l?e?.?c?o?m?/?s?i?t?e?/?l?i?p?i?z?z?a?n?e?r?h?o?r?s?e?s?o?f?v?u?c?i?j?a?k?/?

Needs, news and events for the animals of Europe : UK: Regarding the Humane Household Product Standard

UK Citizens

Started in 2003, the Humane Household Product Standard (HHPS) is the only international scheme which guarantees a product has not been animal tested because companies need to provide proof. With Its own logo, it enables consumers to easily identify products that have not been tested on animals.

Directive 86/609/EEC is the law that controls all animal experimentation in Europe. This legislation is still being reviewed but the draft of its replacement is expected to be ready very soon. This should be followed by changes in the legislation of each member state.

It is not unreasonable that the UK government use the review of Directive 86/609 as an opportunity to make a superior commitment to the “3 Rs” principle to refine, reduce and replace animals in experiments. A good place to start would be to replace the testing of Household Products with validated alternatives.

EDM 1215 asks the UK Government to stop granting licences for the animal testing of household products including their ingredients. For this to be successful around 200 MP signatures are needed.

Please ask your MP to sign EDM 1215 via
http://www.writetothem.com/

To learn more about the HHPS go to
http://www.gocrueltyfree.org/

The RSPCA have endorsed a petition, "Take Action", which asks the British government to work towards ending the use of animals in experiments by replacing them with humane alternatives.

Please sign this RSPCA petition at
http://www.rspca.org.uk/
(From campaigns then Animals in Research)

Thank you

Tony
