It’s a Pittie Party

Best Friends’ John Garcia joins Love-A-Bull in Austin for Pit Bull Awareness Weekend on October 24-25.

All smiles and wagging tailLook at that face. Now what could be more lovable than such a sweet smile? Sadly, not all people look at pit bull terriers and pit-bull-type dogs in the same way and Love-A-Bull wants to change that.

To help alter those perceptions, the organization is hosting a Pit Bull Awareness Weekend in Austin, Texas on October 24-25. And Best Friends’ own John Garcia, Dogtown co-manager and star of the hit National Geographic show “DogTown,” will be the special guest.

“National Pit Bull Awareness Weekend brings attention to issues facing pit bull owners on a regular basis, such as breed-specific discrimination, media bias, neglect and abuse, lack of education and understanding, and other challenges,” notes Meghan Turner, co-founding board member of Love-A-Bull. “We want to debunk the myths that surround these dogs and promote the positive image that should be attributed to the many loving pit bulls in families out there. This weekend allows a concentrated effort and progress to be made on their behalf in communities nationwide.”

The event begins with a family-friendly evening on Saturday, and of course leashed dogs are welcome. Garcia will be on hand for the fun activities, including games, crafts, prize giveaways, and informational booths. Local animal welfare organizations and shelters such as Happy Endings, Austin Pets Alive, EmanciPET and Town Lake Animal Center will also be at the festivities.

John Garcia and Georgia the Vicktory dogThen at 7:30 p.m., enjoy a screening of the “DogTown” episode “Saving the Michael Vick Dogs.”

Garcia will return on Sunday to lead a pet parade through downtown Austin. Love-A-Bull will be awarding prizes for the person and dog wearing the best costumes.

Turner hopes the weekend events can help change the minds of people who are only familiar with the negative stereotypes surrounding pit bulls. “It is important for the public to gain a greater understanding of the true nature of pit bulls and how, in a nurturing and appropriate setting, they can truly be anyone’s best friend (and in the case of the Vicktory Dogs, how former fighting dogs can be rehabilitated).”

This is a much needed event! I hope that these national Pit Bull Awareness parties really change the negative views that a lot of the public has about this wonderful breed. Pit Bull owners are truly bleesed! We know what we have and others have no idea what they are missing!!

I have never had a pit bull, but I do support anything that will bring awareness to the discrimination against them. They are beautiful dogs and I hope some day soon they will be treated properly and not with fear and trepidation. Go for it John, you are a wonderful spokesman for the pitties and for BF.

Good for John and good for Austin. I love Best Friends and wish I could be there. I just adopted a pittie from Colorado who was a refugee, but now Brandy is safe and part of 4 other rescue dogs and loving life in Sun Valley, Idaho. We will try to do a party here as well. Thank you everybody.

Great work! This is needed in cities across the country. I had the opportunity to meet the "dogtown" staff when I was out there in August. Let me tell you that they are the nicest, most dedicated people I have ever come across. John was actaully on vacation at the time. We were sitting in his and Michelle's office when he rushed in to get supplies to help the local animal control. Even on vacation he has the animals in mind. Long live the pit bull!!! America's Dog!
