The cost in dollars has not yet been determined, however, the loss of many animals’ lives was immeasurable after a fire at Second Chance Animal Shelter in Killeen earlier this week. 99 cats and 15 dogs perished mainly due to smoke inhalation. Many of the larger dogs, kept outside, were spared.
Dozens of volunteers, including soldiers and staff from Ft. Hood Army base, have been helping with the cleanup and care of the surviving animals. However, additional assistance is still needed.
