Pet Photos with Santa!

Toledo (Ohio) area pets – naughty and nice – will have the chance to visit Santa this holiday season! Humane Ohio’s “Pet Photos with Santa” fundraiser will take place on Saturday, December 5^th from 10 am – 2 pm at Pet Supplies “Plus” Central Ave. (6923 W. Central, Toledo 43617) and on Sunday, December 6^th from 10 am – 5 pm at Pet Supplies “Plus” Alexis (849 W. Alexis, Toledo 43612). Freeze Frame Photos is donating their time to take the photos and Kohne Camera & Photo is donating the printing, allowing 100% of the proceeds to benefit Humane Ohio!

There are different photo packages to choose from:

$10 – two 5”x7”s and eight wallets

$20 – same as $10 package plus an additional eight wallets OR an 8”x10”

$25 – 24 cards and envelopes

Children and families photos are welcome too (with or without a pet). Photos will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. No appointments.

Proceeds will benefit Humane Ohio’s low-cost spay/neuter clinic which fixes 14,000 animals a year! Humane Ohio can offer low-cost spay/neuter prices to pet owners because, as a 501c3 non-profit organization, it receives private donations and grants – and holds fundraisers like “Pet Photos with Santa” – that help subsidize the true, higher cost of spay/neuter procedures and keep prices low for clients.

Humane Ohio also has a “wish list” available at www.humaneohio.org for anyone who wants to collect items and supplies for the organization this holiday season. People and organizations are also encouraged to hold pet food drives to benefit the Humane Ohio Pet Food Bank, or to bring pet food donations when they come for Santa photos. The pet food bank is a partnership between Humane Ohio, Feed Your Neighbor Ministry (a program of the Toledo Area Ministries), Pet Supplies “Plus” and Petco to make pet food available to pet parents in need.

Humane Ohio operates a low-cost spay/neuter clinic to serve pet owners, stray/feral cat caretakers, animal shelters and rescue groups. Humane Ohio believes that all animals should receive the highest quality veterinary care possible. Their clinic uses state of the art instruments and equipment, all spay/neuter surgeries are performed by qualified, licensed vets (DVMs) and every patient receives a brief physical exam and quality pain medication. Humane Ohio spays/neuters at least 14,000 animals a year and runs the Humane Ohio Pet Food Bank in partnership with Feed Your Neighbor Ministry, a program of the Toledo Area Ministries.

Squeaker's Fundraiser on 11/13 Benefits Humane Ohio

Squeaker's Cafe (Bowling Green, Ohio about 20 - 30 minutes south of Toledo) to host Humane Ohio fundraiser on Friday, November 13th from 6 - 8 pm. Includes vegan (no meat, no dairy) Italian buffet and music generously donated by the Root Cellar String Band playing old-time music on fiddle, banjo, guitar and bass. $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

If you are not able to attend the event, you can still support Humane Ohio and get a great vegan Italian meal for you or your family by purchasing a ticket for a "to go" meal ($15, must be purchased in advance). Tickets for the event and "to go" meals may be purchased at Squeaker's (175 N. Main St., Bowling Green) or by calling volunteer Margaret W. at 419-575-2530.

Humane Ohio operates a NON-PROFIT, low-cost spay/neuter clinic to serve pet owners, feral/stray cat caretakers, animal shelters and rescue groups. Humane Ohio’s “Raise the Roof” campaign continues through 2011 with a goal of raising $270,000. This amount will pay off the new building so the organization will not carry a mortgage and can help more people and pets, and it will cover all of the expenses associated with the building like moving and closing costs and building materials. Slaske Building Company donated most of their time and labor. People can support the “Raise the Roof” campaign by making a one-time or recurring monetary donation, sponsoring/naming a “Recovery Cubby” where the dogs and cats recuperate after their spay/neuter surgeries, donating an item(s) off of the “Raise the Roof” wish list, or creating their own fundraiser. Naming opportunities at the new spay/neuter clinic are available for businesses and individuals

To celebrate the fact that they’ll be making a bigger impact on pet overpopulation, Humane Ohio will be hosting an Open House Celebration and Pet Food Drive on Saturday, October 17^th from 11 am – 1 pm. People in the community are invited to tour the new spay/neuter clinic, located at 3131 Tremainsville between Laskey and Alexis, where at least 14,000 animals a year will be fixed. K100 will be broadcasting live, Max & Erma’s dog mascot “Scraps” will be on hand, there will be complimentary food/drinks, and every guest will receive a doggy bag full of goodies and a coupon for $5 off a spay/neuter or a free rabies shot at the time of the spay/neuter. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 11 am.

Hello, I'm looking for a home for a wonderful cat that I am fostering. His name is Sparky. He falls in the "special needs" catagory and I have not been able to find a forever home for him in the 7 months he has been with me. Because of an illness as a kitten, he is a bit wobbly and does not always remember to head to the litterbox until it is too late. He is not physically incontinent; his brain just doesn't give him enough warning that he has to go to the box. He is about 16 months old and very active and playful. He is non-aggresive and gets along great with other cats. Sparky is a little shy with new people but guickly warms up to them. He'll be your best friend if food is involved. He has been adopted once, but was returned because of his problem. I'm hoping to find someone who is equipped to live with incontinent kitties and will open their home and heart to him. If you're interested I can provide much more info about him, and a photo. He would be so happy to be with playful cats about his age! I am more than willing to transport him to another state if need be.

Ohio has been hit very hard with the home foreclosure crises. Near Akron, Ohio, a foreclosed home had over 98 cats living in it. Only one man has attempted to deal with this crisis. Time and resources are running out. All other avenues have been exhausted. To make matters worse, one of the major rescue group in Akron surrendered around 110 animals in late July because of animal neglect charges. And another situation of animal neglect resulted in 29 cats being seized. These three situations have overstressed the humane community in Akron.

Our little NYLA has been adopted. We can not thank everyone enough for all the support, guidance and networking. Nyla is with her new family and is placed in a home that will be perfect for her on going rehab and continued care.

Four older Percheron horses need good homes

My father is very ill and no longer able to care for these horses. Some are well trained in pulling wagons and equipment, would be great for training younger horses. Have all mostly been just pets last several years. We have been contacting rescues in the area but many do not want such big horses, or such old ones. Really need to find homes ASAP, it is too much for my mother to handle. Please contact me if you have any possibilities. They are located in Junction City, Ohio. We do have a trailer, we could deliver, but of course would want to check out barn first. Thank you.

Great Event! Canine Fun Days - August 15 & 16, 2009 Moreland Hills, Ohio

Need something really fun to do with your dog? Or are you looking to adopt?? Come to the Cleveland Metroparks Polo Field in Moreland Hills August 15th and 16th! Put on annually by Greyhound Adoption of Ohio, Canine Fun Days is a weekend packed full of great events for all breeds! And over 25 rescue groups will be represented!

There'll be lure coursing (fenced, of course), both straight and round, agility, and a GREAT fun dog show, with $100 and a beautiful silver trophy for the "Costume Class" winner! Other classes include “Best Buns", “Best Trick", “Prettiest Eyes", “Kissing Contest", “Dunking for Dogs (hot dogs, that is)", “Tail Wagging” and more! If you’re in the mood for “low and slow”, come watch the riotous “Basset Hound Races” and “Wiener Dog Races” (all Basset and Dachshund-like dogs eligible)!

And not to be missed: Rescue Lane. where more than 25 Northeast Ohio rescue groups and shelters participate, with pets awaiting homes. Our Rescue Lane is a wonderful place, full of hope and the promise of a new life for many of the area’s homeless pets. From Labs to lizards, cockers to cockatiels, Scotties to skunks, your new best friend is waiting!

Also present on Rescue Lane this year will be GAO's Greyhounds from Guam! These wonderful greyhounds were essentially abandoned on Guam, when the island's only greyhound track closed, last November. Greyhound Adoption of Ohio, along with rescue groups around the country, stepped in to help these poor, unfortunate pups! After a journey of more than 7000 miles, several of the Guam Greyhounds will be present and looking for their first-ever homes!

The festivities begin on Saturday at 10AM and on Sunday at 10AM, with our “Blessing of the Animals”! All breeds and “non” breeds are welcome!

Hours for the event are 10:00am - 5:00pm both Saturday and Sunday.

Nyla is a special gal that needs a home....help us find that loving family

Nyla is a special puppy living in Florida but know that transport will be arranged for her to be with her new

family when they are found. She has been with Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida for 5 of her 7 months

and has taught us a lot about love, determination and life. Nyla has stiffness in her back legs and hips and

with therapy she is doing wonderful. She may look a little different physically, but she is absolutely no

different than any other loving playful puppy. She is completely independent and requires no assistance to

function like a normal puppy. Nyla can swim, run and play. She is a "lap lab" as she is smaller than a

pocket lab (about 35 lbs) and fits perfectly on you lap. She has been around children and cats and has

passed with flying colors. Nyla is very mellow and would do just fine with a family in a condo because of

her small size. Nyla is house trained, crate trained, and knows basic commands. She is not a chewer and

is out of the early puppy phase behaviors. Nyla is one of the sweetest labs we have ever had the

opportunity to meet, learn from and love. Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida would be more than willing

Please help stop this from happening again. This "rescue" group was raided last week. The 2 women that run it are being charged with 15 counts of animal cruelty. If you have any facts in this case, please contact the Humane Society of Greater Akron - humane office Tim. Let's make sure this doesn't happen again. There are links in this story that take you to all related stories. Please look at the pictures and see if you agree with the director, who claims this is only 24 hrs of mess.

Pete, adorable little pittie boy, is in URGENT NEED OF A HOME/RESCUE! Mike, the Dog Warden, is desperately trying to place Pete before the owner turns him into the pound, where Mike will be forced to put him to sleep immediately! I received an email from Mike today, 6/30/09 confirming that Pete is still in need! Mike will be away for several days but will check his messages as soon as he returns. Please email or call and leave a message if you would like to help this little boy!

This sweet old gal is sitting in an overcrowded and chaotic shelter, scared and confused as to how she got here. Patty came to the Humane Society of Greater Akron several weeks ago as a stray and no one has come looking for her. Now she sits, waiting to find what her future holds. This is where a kind hearted rescuer needs to step in!!! We need help for Patty!

She is a 10+ year old yellow lab and approx 65 lbs (she is not too thrilled we are revealing her weight to so many!!!!) She has been fully vaccinated, heartworm tested (negative), wormed, and up to date on flea and heartworm prevention. We do not believe her to be spayed. Due to moderate arthritis, she is on senior vitamins and joint supplements twice daily to help her feel better and move a little easier She also has some dental disease which may need future attention. Because her teeth are not the best, she is a huge fan of canned food...oh yes, and she also LOVES hotdogs as well!

This girl is low key as most of her days are filled with lounging around and getting plenty of beauty sleep. She is very fond of large fluffy dog beds/blankets and getting as much attention from humans as possible. Gets a little annoyed with other furry friends so this older gal would love to be spoiled and rule the roost as an only doggie! Her temperament with people is wonderfully loving.

It tears us apart to see her so scared and alone at our shelter. No one is adopting her and she deserves better than a noisy shelter kennel to live out the rest of her time on this earth. I am afraid she does not have much time left at our shelter before a decision may be made to euthanize her so WE MUST GET HER OUT ASAP!

Patty will be released to an approved and reputable rescue at no charge....we would just like to see her go somewhere safe that will give her a chance. A donation of wet food and a few extra comfy blankets will come with her of course!!! Any rescue interested, please contact me right away. Transport help is available.
