Ohio Residents: When you go to the polls on Tuesday, November 3, vote “No” on Issue 2!
What Is Issue 2?
Issue 2 is proposing to amend the Ohio Constitution to require the State to create a 13-member “Livestock Care Standards Board."
This Board would alone have the authority to "establish[ ] standards governing the care and well-being of livestock and poultry." This Board could also decide for Ohioans, "agricultural best management practices" and handling of such issues as biosecurity, disease prevention, food safety practices, and the protection of food supplies.
Agri-business, factory farms—not voters or their legislators nor even prosecutors or judges―would decide whether the treatment of farm animals is appropriate.
It is unclear how the Livestock Care Standards Board would impact the work of county humane societies in enforcing anti-cruelty statutes, which encompass the well-being of both farm animals and companion animals.
In summary, if Issue 2 is passed, it means that an industry weighted Board not selected by voters will decide what Ohioans eat, how food is produced, including factory farming methods, antibiotics and other drugs or chemicals used, genetic modifications, and cloning, treatment of animals, and the safety and quality of the food supply.
