We are looking for ways to invite more groups and shelters in every county to join us. That's where you come in! Please contact your local animal rescue groups or shelters in NC and invite them to join the Pet Foster Network if they have not already done so. We can help them recruit more foster homes. EMERGENCY!! PUPPIES IN DESPERATE NEED!! Will be euthanized by 4:30 today EST!!

My name is Crista and I am a volunteer with Surry Animal Rescue in Mount Airy, NC.

We have received a call from Surry Animal Control where they have 4 puppies that they are going to put to sleep if they don’t get them out of the shelter by 4:30 EST today. We would love to take these babies, but we simply don’t have the funds or foster homes available right now and have been unsuccessful networking with other rescues. These are adorable 7 week old shepherd mixes, 2 male and 2 female, and it seems that they may have some type of neurological disorder where they are shaking. We had a vet look at them, and he definitely thinks it is something neurological but he is not a specialist and he thinks that it is hard to say, but as they get older, they may come out of it. They are very playful and loving and just need a chance to thrive.

Please let me know as soon as possible if there is anything you can do.

Foster Dog needs new family - urgent (foster parents are expecting baby in 7 weeks)

My name is Kristy Bochniak and I'm a foster parent for a rescue organization in Charlotte North Carolina called Crossroads Animal Rescue (crossroadsanimalrescue.com) . We have a special situation that we need your help with. We have a very special foster dog and her name is Mocha. Mocha is a 2 year old German Shepherd/ Rottweiler mix. My husband and I have been fostering Mocha for a year and a half and are having a hard time getting her placed because of her temperament. Mocha is a very sweet dog but she is untrusting of others, especially other animals. She is extremely dog aggressive and has put our trainer's dog in the hospital. My husband and I have two cats and a dog that she has learned how to live with (although she has bitten our dog three times) but she is very unpredictable and we would not feel comfortable adopting her out to a home with other dogs. Mocha has been through training with two different companies and does very well with obedience but we have been advised not to adopt her out to anyone with other pets or small children. Mocha is also very protective of my husband and I and our home. She has accepted us as her pack members and I do believe that she would do anything to protect us. While this is a desirable trait for some people, it is hard for us to have any guests in our home and we see this as a problem for anyone who may be interested in adopting her. My husband and I are very attached to Mocha and feel extreme responsibility for her well being because we are truly the only beings that she trusts. The problem is, we are expecting our first child in about 7 weeks and we have been advised that she should not remain in our home. We were really optimistic that she would have been placed in a forever home by now and are starting to worry as her options are beginning to dwindle. Because we are a rescue our first thought was just to transfer her to another foster family but all of our other fosters have at least two other dogs and it would be very risky to place her with any of them. I am hoping that someone on this site might be able to help us out. As a rescue we feel that we have exhausted most of our options and I'm afraid to think of what might be her eventual fate. Please let me know if you have any advice that may help Mocha, she really is a great dog and in the right home I feel she would really thrive.

Pit Bull Needs Knee Surgery for Torn ACL

Hello,

My big, (just turned two this past week) Pit bull, Rocco, has torn BOTH his ACLs. Rocco is a wonderful boy who is already a therapy dog, has his CGC, was a kayaking dog until he injured his knees running. He was a very active boy, and as a pit bull was trying to teach people around him what amazing dogs they are. He had to have emergency surgery for the left leg just so that he could walk again, and he is recovering from that; however, he still has the right one to go, after the left one heals (has approx. 4 weeks to go on that). I was able to scramble around with baking dog biscuits and asking for donations for those, had a yard sale, I make custom necklaces featuring people's pets or whatever they'd like on them, like family members, etc. Anyway I am finally getting this first knee paid for. I still need to somehow raise enough $ for the second knee. The surgery is $2500 and then there's rehab which can run $100-150 per trip...when the doc wants him in rehab 2-3 times a week, that really adds up.

I've had a major surgery myself this year and am still paying on medical bills for that, and so I am asking for donations, tips for fundraising, or perhaps you may be interested in a necklace that features your own pet. Playful Lab Mix Needs New Home

Dear Best Friends Member,

Two year ago Andrea, her husband and three children added to their family in the form of a beautiful boxer/lab mix named Beanie. She was coming into a home with cats and two other dogs. Almost from the beginning Beanie was temperamental when it came to the senior female dog that had been with Andrea and her family for many years. Wanting to tackle this head on, they brought a trainer in to work with the dogs and the family all together. Over the past two years there were some moments when Beanie needed a little reminder that manners were mandatory, but over all, things were very peaceful. Last week Beanie, for reasons unknown, became aggressive with the senior female and injured her leg. Thankfully Beanie responded to commands and Nana the senior dog was not seriously injured.

The family loves Beanie very much, but feel that placing her in a new loving home will be best for Nana and the family. Beanie is an amazing dog, has never had issues with other dogs (besides Nana) and has been around young children for the past year which she has loved. She is playful, loving and very smart.

4 cats left behind after owner was evicted

4 adult cats were abandoned in a one bedroom apartment after the owner was evicted. They were sent to a local VA shelter and left at the back of the room where no one would have seen them. Two of them were sick and no one knew. A compassionate and seasoned local rescuer by chance saw these cats and did not have the heart to just left them behind. She took them home and along with her rescue network, fund was raised for medical care and supplies for these 4 forgotten kitties.

We are looking for loving forever homes for these 4 kitties either as a group or in pair. Will consider individual adoption if we must but from what we know, these 4 cats are all they knew each other all their lives. It would be great if at least two of them can stay together at a new home.

Transportation will be provided. All healthy now, shots up-to-date. All spayed/neutered. All around 3 to 4 years. 2 females and 2 males. Pictures below.

Please contact me if you would like to adopt these beautiful cats or if you have any lead.

Desperately need help with a dog!

We have a 7 year old mixed (we're not really sure what) that we found as a stray when he was a puppy. A neighbor said they saw someone throw him out a window. He has always been very protective at our house, but sociable as long as he is out of our yard. We have tried to get him to relax at home, but have not had any success. We did not have kids when we first got him, and he has always been scared of children, even our son (who is now 4). Unfortunately, a couple of days ago our son decided to let one of his friends in the backyard (he's never tried to go there alone) and the dog tried to attack the little girl and our son. He bit the girl's hand, though my son later said she grabbed him to try to pet him, so it explained it a bit better. Luckily we saw it right away and she was not hurt badly. Still, in a neighborhood with a lot of small kids, we can't risk this happening again but it breaks my heart. We made an appointment to have him put down, as I know he'd be classified "unadoptable" by a shelter, but we couldn't bring ourselves to do it today. We are hoping that maybe there is somewhere out there that would take him....he has always been fine away from home and the people at the kennel where he's stayed during vacations for years think he's the most laid back dog ever. He got out of the fence when we lived somewhere else, and went next door and laid on the neighbor's deck while the petted him....it's just our house he tries to protect to no end. We can't keep him but I can't figure out what to do with him. We have 2 other dogs, plus fish and 2 geckos....my husband is in management with a major petstore chain...we aren't the kind of people who try to give their dog away. We would be happy to send money to help take care of him if there is anyone who will give him a chance to live. We live in NC but will drive if we need to if we can find something to do with him. Golden Retriever Needs Help With Chemo Treatments!

Casey a beautiful golden retriever has been diagnosed with cancer. She is currently undergoing chemo treatments and weekly blood tests. I am trying to help her mom out with the treatments. The treatments range from $250-$350 per treatment. The price varies due to the fact of different medicines she may require. I have posted a chip in in hopes to get others to donate and help the family out. Casey is the sweetest dog with a heart of gold. The treatments have improved her quality of life and she is playful as ever. Please if can afford any amount to help them out it would be greatly appreciated. Casey is being treated at NCSU Vet Hospital in NC. Please keep Casey and her family in your thoughts and prayers! Thanks for reading this! I am Casey's biggest fan and aunt Wanda!

Help a Beautiful Golden!

Hi! I'm trying to save a beautiful golden retriever girl from the Columbus Animal Shelter in North Carolina, but I live up in Connecticut and she only has until tomorrow evening until she is killed in a gas chamber. (I can't believe they use GAS CHAMBERS!) Anyway, I would drive the 13 hour drive to get her but I work at an animal hospital and cannot take tomorrow off, I'll lose my job. Does anyone know of any foster homes that would take her for a night? If anyone does, my plan is to leave work tomorrow at 5 and drive straight down to NC and get there for Thursday morning. The workers at the shelter say she is friendly and happy and young, it breaks my heart to think that just because I live so far away I can't get to her before she is killed. If anyone can help in anyway, I'd be so grateful. Thank you!

Volunteering at Best Friends

We recently attended a convention in Las Vegas and took a tour of some of the national parks in Arizona and Utah and visited the sanctuary in Kanab. What a beautiful location and only a 3-1/2 to 4 hour drive from Las Vegas and right in the middle of three of our national parks, Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce Canyon. Like many of us, my wife and I have been active with local animal welfare organizations for years and have always known about Best Friends and the wonderful accomplishments of the society. However seeing the facility first hand is indeed an experience not to be forgotten and when coupled with the beauty Mother Nature has provided in the parks, it only makes us want to go back. So we are, but this time we’re volunteering as well as sightseeing. We’ve partnered with Best Friends to create an escorted tour that will include two days of volunteering with the animals under the guidance of the expert staff. We’ll have the opportunity to work with the animal group of our choice, cats, dogs, birds, horses even pot-bellied pigs, goats and bunnies.

The one week tour will include Best Friends for two days, a day at Bryce Canyon and two days at Zion National Parks, April 25-May 1, 2010. Sabbath Rescue

Sabbath Dog Rescue needs your signature to help keep this shelter open. They are petitioning the local government to provide them with a license to shelter animals.

" In light of the enormous foreclosure problem we are experiencing here in south Florida, the number of dogs rescued by Sabbath Rescue within the last two years has exploded. These abandoned dogs, most sickly and inhumanely treated, now have a home where they are cared for, loved, and have the possibility of being adopted. Sabbath has been rescuing dogs for the past 9 years. For the first 6 years, Robby Coy has been saving these animals with only his own funds. He has given up his business and spent his life savings just to save these abandoned dogs.

And now, the City of Miami wants to close Sabbath down because of a kennel license violation. Animal Services director, Sara Pizano, has filed a $5,000 lien on the farmland on which Sabbath is located. They have intimidated the owner of the land to such an extent that he refuses to dispute the citation. Sabbath has been ordered off the farm within 12 days. We will fight this, but regardless, if Animal Services finds that we have not moved in time, it is their intention to forcibly take the 150 dogs to their slaughter.

We desperately need your help to convince the City officials to either immediately issue a kennel license to Sabbath, or, in the alternative, to grant a stay for 12 months in order for Sabbath to resolve this situation. The petition letter reads as follows:

"Dear Mayor, Commissioners of Miami-Dade County:

We, the undersigned, have signed a petition in favor of issuing a Kennel License to Sabbath Memorial Rescue and to release the lien pending on the rented property in the Redlands. If a license cannot be obtained by Sabbath immediately, then we ask for a 12 month moratorium for Sabbath to do whatever must be done for the City to grant such license. "

Please help me find Semei a home

I rescued Semei a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, I already have 9 rescues which have become permanent members of my family because they are considered the "undesirable" breeds. As much as I love this beautiful boy, I do not have the time to give him the attention and training that he deserves. Below is his bio:

Hi, my name is Seimei (pronounced Say-May). It means “life” in Japanese. My rescue mom thought it was appropriate since I seem to have gotten a second lease on life – my teeth were so bad I could not eat and probably would have starved without help, and I am barely two years old! Good news, though, I have been to the doctor, and after having 14 damaged teeth removed – a whole bunch of ticks got their eviction notice, too -- I have been given a clean bill of health. Since I cannot speak, I am unable to share my life before being rescued, but my kind, gentle nature needs no words.

I am a male, white shepherd/husky mix, neutered (not happy about it, but I’ll get over it), and up-to-date on shots and heartworm prevention meds. I am very high energy so I will need a fenced yard and a lot of exercise. If you like to run or walk, I promise to be the most dependable and enthusiastic exercise buddy you will ever have.

I am still learning how to act in the house and around other animals, but with patience and work, I can be the best boy ever!

Nyla is a special puppy living in Florida but know that transport will be arranged for her to be with her new

family when they are found. She has been with Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida for 5 of her 7 months

and has taught us a lot about love, determination and life. Nyla has stiffness in her back legs and hips and

with therapy she is doing wonderful. She may look a little different physically, but she is absolutely no

different than any other loving playful puppy. She is completely independent and requires no assistance to

function like a normal puppy. Nyla can swim, run and play. She is a "lap lab" as she is smaller than a

pocket lab (about 35 lbs) and fits perfectly on you lap. She has been around children and cats and has

passed with flying colors. Nyla is very mellow and would do just fine with a family in a condo because of

her small size. Nyla is house trained, crate trained, and knows basic commands. She is not a chewer and

is out of the early puppy phase behaviors. Nyla is one of the sweetest labs we have ever had the

opportunity to meet, learn from and love. Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida would be more than willing
