They were tested positive for Feline Leukemia about a week ago. They're currently being fostered, but they need a permanent home with someone who will give them love and tend to their medical needs. They are adorable, rambunctious, normal little kitties that love to wrestle, snuggle, and sleep. And eat, that's a big one too.

If you are a fan of the DogTown series on National Geographic, you will find this book to be the perfect companion.

The book focuses on many dogs who have been featured on the series and tells their stories in detail. Some stories, such as the tale of Wiggles, a dog with neurological problems and incontinence, are joyful, ending with his adoption by a loving family. Some, like the story of Bruno a dog who came to DogTown severely ill and lived his last days under the care of veterinarian Mike Dix, are tearful. And some, like the saga of former Michael Vick dog Georgia, are still developing. What all these stories have in common is that they are uplifting and speak to the Best Friends Animal Society's goal of a world of no more homeless pets. None of the dogs who come to DogTown are bad dogs, they are simply dogs that need love, attention and training.

What the book adds to the television series, is a focus on the staff members who make DogTown tic. In addition to their role in each dog's stories, the staff members are profiled. A reader learns which dogs influenced each staff member's life and how they found their way to working at DogTown. For example, you'll learn about how John Garcia brought home rescued animals as a adolescent in Arizona and how Dr. Mike Dix adopted the first dog he ever performed surgery on in veterinary school.

This book is moving without being too touchy feely. While you might cry tears of joy or sadness for these dogs, the book never tries to hard to squeeze emotion out of its reader. The true stories in the book are simply reflective of the wonderful work that DogTown does every day.

You can buy this book on Amazon by clicking here. A portion of each sale goes to Best Friends. I think it would make a perfect holiday gift for the animal lover in your family.

Re: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO BUILD SQUIRREL NEST BOXES!

Aloha:

This is fantastic, way to go. I plan to download your plans and have them on Hawaii Go Local Media Gallery area for others to use. BTW we have plans there an dpix for a feline habitat that can easily be taken apart and also can be used for bird aviary.

Have you contacted local companies Home Depot Lowes etc as well as major lumber and construction companies for donated lumber and tools etc? Would anyone allow a donation bin for your cause to be there with a volunteer explaining what you do or handing out a pamphlet for your group? Show the finished product. Do you have pix of them?

Am sure you have thought and doe all of these and I know you want recycled materials to save trees so what about any demolition companies in your area?

Best of luck and mahalo for the plans.

Take care.

(formerly "Spot" from Brooklyn ACC) was just saved from the kill
shelter, but he has a long rad ahead of him. This EXCEPTIONALLY
TEMPERED American Bulldog - Pit mix is truly a gentle giant. His foster mom even renamed him because he was not a mere "Spot" on the carpet, but a glorious gladiator: SPARTICUS.

Sparticus
had been adopted a year before, and returned to the shelter by uncaring
adopters because they did not want to have to pay his "medical bills"--
we didn't really know what that meant at the time, and neither did the
shelter.

Within 24 hours of arriving at his foster home,
Sparticus was limping and dragging his left rear leg, for no apparent
reason. He had been playing hard with his new friends and foster
brothers, but nothing out of the ordinary had happened---

During
an emergency visit to the vet, x-rays revealed a severe spiral fracture
of the femur, repairable only by surgically inserting pins and re
attaching the bone. The veterinarian's opinion was that he had probably
been hit by a car in his old home, giving him a minor fracture, which
was then forced into a severe fracture after playing with his friends.

Our
hearts break for him. While we don't know what, exactly, happened to
him in his last home, it was clearly not good--- and this sweet gentle
soul has been suffering since with the pain of abandonment and now
this. The estimate for his surgery is approximately $2,500. Please help us put Sparticus' leg back together, while we also rebuild his trust and confidence.

The alternative, the vet said, is to put him to sleep-- which we refuse to do.

THANK YOU to Friends of Animal Rescue which has already donated $500 toward his care!
Empty Cages Collective, an Alliance Participating Organization, was inundated with orphaned baby gray squirrels this fall. These babies were orphaned when their nest trees were cut down, their mother were hit by cars or indiscriminately poisoned with poison intended for rats. Most of these babies were "pulled" from Animal Care & Control where they were at risk of being unnecessarily killed. Others were rescued by the general public. Through timeless dedication, most of the babies survived and thrived and it is now overdue to prepare for their eventual fall (and for the younger ones, spring) release.

When rehabilitated grey squirrels are released back into the wild, a nest box needs to be placed in the area (per squirrel) where the release is happening so as to help them adjust to living the wild life. This is especially important with autumn babies who will not have the whole summer to find food in warmer weather. We really need to get some squirrel nest boxes made as buying them (about $60-75 a pop plus shipping) is completely unfeasible for ECC's modest budget.

I hope everyone is well. This
is a super URGENT email to try to save the life of an adorable pit bull
Charlie, who has nowhere to live - and he needs a foster or someone to
adopt him by this Saturday - 48 hours from now. Tom, the guy who
has been taking care of Charlie since April, saved his life when he was
going to be euthanized by the shelter after being found as a stray in
Rockaway Beach. Tom originally planned to keep Charlie forever - but he
himself has run into a terrible living situation, and will be staying
with a friend whose building doesn't allow dogs. I've already
recommended the "Safety Net" program at the AC&C - but Tom doesn't
feel that he can take care of a dog anymore, because his life is too
unpredictable, and he plans to take a job where he will be traveling
the world. Is there anyone in our group - or anybody who knows a friend
- that can take Charlie in, so he doesn't have to go back to the
shelter? This poor guy finally knew the comfort of a home and has been
well trained and was enjoying his life. It would be a travesty to have
him wind up back at the shelter, with little chance of finding a home
again. I don't send out these pleas for help too often, as I know there
are a billion pit bulls that need help at the moment...But let's at
least try to help Charlie!

He's only three years old, white and brindle, and is a "very lovable and cuddly dog". Tom says "He loves attention and would be content cuddling all day.
He is completely house broken and doesn't chew on furniture or items
left around the house. Due to his previous circumstances, I actually
believe he is afraid of chewing anything as he still to this day hasn't
chewed a bone I had bought him." Charlie loves women and most men, but
he will growl at men who enter the home - if he doesn't know them.
(Like almost all dogs, i would say). View photos of Charlie here...
http://www.meetup.com/NYC-Pitbull/photos/

Please email me IMMEDIATELY if you can help!! Thanks and hope you have a lovely day, Amy (and Patti Smith the pit bull)

2 Beagles Need Home--Owner Passed Away

Fritz 38 pounds beagle mix

To some people, this seems shocking. Turkeys are the mascot of this holiday and many people cannot picture celebrating without one on the table.

For me, Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for all that I have in life and to be compassionate toward all living things. Every year, millions of turkeys are slaughtered in factory farms, living in horrid conditions. (To learn more about how turkeys are treated on factory farms, click on Compassion Over Killing's report: Animal Suffering in the Turkey Industry. Please be warned that report is disturbing.)

Even when you are very strong in your beliefs, it can be alienating to be the only one at a table not participating in a tradition. Here are some survival tips on how vegans and vegetarians can survive a holiday meal with minimal conflict from unsupportive or confused relatives. My family, while completely omnivorous, supports our vegan lifestyle. My mother is even making vegan pumpkin pie.

So if I'm not eating a turkey this Thanksgiving, then what am I eating? The answer to that is lots of things. Many vegetarians and vegans choose to substitute their turkey with Tofurkey, this vegan soy meat roast is filled with stuffing and can be bought at most major grocery stores. Another roast on the market is the Field Roast Celebration Roast. Field Roast products are vegan meat made from grain and the Celebration Roast is filled with a vegan sausage and apple stuffing. In past years, my husband and I have opted to bring the Tofurkey roast, but we might be trying the Celebration Roast instead this year, just to mix it up.

If you'd rather stay away from the mock meat route, why not just make a bunch of delicious vegetable dishes? You can find a plethora of vegan Thanksgiving recipes on VegWeb.

Don't feel like cooking at all? How about ordering a Holiday Dinner Platter from Veggie Brothers? All you have to do is heat it up. You might even be able to win a dinner of vegetable and seitan puff pastry from Native Foods and an Apple Crumb Cake from Babycakes by entering this contest before November 18. If all else fails, you can also take a swig of Tofurkey and Gravy soda by Jones soda. It's festive and a lot less filling.

If you don't want to stay in for Thanskgiving, there are plenty of vegan friendly places to dine. Farm Sanctuary is holding Celebrations for the Turkeys in Waktins Glen, NY and at Tavern on the Green in New York City the weekend before Thanksgiving. I will be attending the celebration at Tavern on the Green with my husband and omnivore parents Maybe I'll see you there? Please note that reservations for these events must be made by November 13th. The day of Thanksgiving, why not dine at a vegan restaurant? Candle Cafe is offering this menu and Sacred Chow is offering this menu for pre-order takeout or to eat in.

Even if you're still not ready to give up that turkey, why not at least sponsor one? Farm Sanctuary's Adopt-A-Turkey Project allows you to sponsor one of six turkeys currently residing in their New York or California shelters. Your one time $25 donation will help Farm Sanctuary continue to rescue farm animals and share the message of compassion for all creatures. You can also help turkeys by signing this petition asking President Obama to ensure that the turkey pardoned by the White House this November goes to a proper farm sanctuary where it can be cared for.

I wish you all a wonderful and compassionate early Thanksgiving.

Nova,
(as in "SUPER-Nova" because he is breathtakingly gorgeous AND
mind-blowingly sweet) is a 1 year old orange tabby boy with amber
eyes
who was brought to the shelter by an owner who was moving out of state,
and was unable to take Nova with him for whatever reason. The shelter
was overflowing, Nova found himself on the euthanasia list...SIX nights
in a row!!! WHY?...because six nights in a row, he was given a reprieve
by shelter staff and volunteers who kept hoping that someone would see
how special he was and take him out of there. Finally, we received an
email about him, and it really was love at first sight. The minute i
got him home and lifted him out of his box, he started purring like
mad. He curled up on my shoulder and closed his eyes. "Impressed" would
be an understatement to describe how we feel about this guy. He is so
gentle and trusting and really just wants to be petted and talked to
and loved. In fact, I have rarely seen a cat trust complete strangers
so easily (especially after the shelter environment, which can be
terrifying to any animal).

Other
things i have learned about Nova in the time he has been with us...Nova
is one of the gentlest cats i've met...he is a quiet boy; i would say he invites attention rather than demands
it...he has the itty-bittiest meow ever, and he starts purring the
minute you walk in the room. he loves his belly stroked, and will
usually flop down and roll over as soon as you start petting him. He
likes to sit on the edge of the bathroom sink and play with the stream
of water from the faucet, and he adores his jingly ball...he will bat
it back to you if you roll it to him. If you pick him up and put him
over your shoulder, he will relax on you like a rag doll. He also does
this really cute thing with his tail where he curls it up in the shape
of an "O" - you have to see it...I've never seen a cat do that
before...bizarre and adorable...he's just an awesome, special, gorgeous
boy all round - and i know Orange guys are usually handsome, but he is
breathtaking, he has a face like no other cat i know, his markings are
incredible...sometimes it looks like he's wearing a crown.

he uses his scratching post and board faithfully, and has always been perfect in the box...

quite simply, i adore him - i always look forward to spending time with
him...he loves to follow you around the room, sometimes doing his teeny
cries to you to pet him...but of course, he needs a place and human of
his own, and belongs in a fantastic forever home with a really gentle,
affectionate, soft spoken and good-hearted person who would like him to
sleep with them and keep them company in whatever they're doing...and
will know what a gem of a cat they have. Nova is essentially an orange
teddy bear...the first day in our home, he was rolling over to give me
his belly and soliciting brushings...even crying to us when we walked
away..."MORE, MORE!!!", he was saying...and he deserves it. Perhaps you
have heard the legend of Orange Tabbies, that they are the friendliest
of feline breeds? Cats like Nova gave rise to the legend, i guarantee
it. Come and meet this gorgeous boy, but be prepared to lose your
heart, as we have already. In return though, Nova will give you all of
his, and a lifetime of furry hugs and devotion. Can you give him the
same? Nova is FIV/FELV NEG, and will come to his new home Neutered, UTD
on vaccinations, thoroughly vetted, and micro chipped. To meet this
feline marvel, contact us at Opt2Adopt@animail.net
I have thought about him a lot every day since he passed away five weeks ago. He is not the first pet I've had pass over the Rainbow Bridge, but his death was sudden and he was a young, healthy cat. Below, I've decided to share a memorial piece I wrote for him, which will appear in the next online newsletter for Zani's Furry Friends in New York City. This is the rescue group I adopted Tre. Working on this memorial piece with Tre's former foster mom Gisella, helped us both in our grieving process.

A Memorial for Tre

I wasn’t looking to adopt another cat. Our cat at home, Anacapri, had been fine as our solo furry resident and I was worried about how she would react to a new addition. But my husband, Chris, kept sending me cats from Petfinder. Finally, I told him, if you can find the most nonthreatening cat out there, then we can go meet him. That’s when he sent me a cat named Kismet.

Kismet had had a tough life. He was declawed as a kitten, suffered a horrible injury to his leg when he had been hit by a car and then was left for dead in the city shelter by his former owners when they didn’t want to pay the bill to have his leg amputated. He was rescued by Zani’s Furry Friends and now a healthy, happy guy. He was a declawed, three-legged cat. What could be less threatening to Anacapri? I agreed to meet him.

We headed over to the Upper East Side to meet Kismet at his foster mom Gisella’s apartment. Once there, a beautiful Maine Coone came into the living room. Immediately I was struck by his docile nature. He seemed not to be phased by the strange visitors. Despite only having the three legs, he hopped up onto the sofa and sat next to me to be petted. Chris and I agreed that night over dinner that Kismet was the right choice for us and contacted Gisella the next day to make arrangements to pick him up.

The day we brought Kismet home, Anacapri was not thrilled. In fact, she commenced to hiss at the visitor. We separated the two between a French door until things calmed down a bit. The whole time Kismet remained calm. He sat on the kitchen floor with us and purred loudly. He kneaded the air and seemed to be in utter contentment. “I already love him.” I said to Chris. “Me too.” Chris replied. That night as we settled in with our new guy, we decided to change Kismet’s name to Tre.

Tre loved everyone. He would gallop full speed to the door whenever someone knocked and proceed to collapse in a fit of purrs at their feet begging to be pet. At parties, he would work the room cruising from lap to lap and snuggling in next to whoever was sitting in the best spot on the sofa. He loved to be petted and held and to always be involved in whatever was going on. If I were cooking in the kitchen, Tre would be lying near my feet watching what was going on. If I were doing Pilates, he would lay at the edge of my yoga mat and roll around until I pet his belly and if I were watching television he would crawl into my lap. He also loved to give kisses. I would cradle him in my arms and he would stare up at me with his huge eyes. He would then place one paw gently on my cheek while closing his eyes and moving in to lick me on the lips. I called it his makeout move.

When Tre wasn’t busy being a lover, he was playing. His handicap did not stop him from being the fastest cat around. We called him a ninja, because if you turned your back for a second he would suddenly have vanished and appeared somewhere else. He used that speed to torment his sister by chasing her around the apartment and also suddenly tackling her in the hallway. While most of the time she seemed annoyed by his actions, we caught her initiating the chase sometimes. He also could not be stopped from learning to climb up on top of the sofas to better view the birds that gathered on the fire escape with Anacapri.

Tre suddenly passed away a few weeks ago. There was no warning. He was not sick when we took him to the emergency vet’s office and told he was having an asthma attack. He was only 2-years-old and we had only had him with us for 10 months. It was the kind of life event that makes you angry at the world. Chris and I remain devastated about it. The only comfort I can take is the knowledge of how much we loved Tre. We not only gave him a home, but we made him a part of our family. He could always make me laugh when I was having a down day and would always let me carry him on my shoulder when I needed a cuddle. He gave companionship to Anacapri.

He also taught me about resilience. Even though the bulk of Tre’s life was not happy, he remained the happiest cat I have ever seen. I never for once saw him scared or upset. He never let his disability stop him from doing something he wanted to do. Even if he had to try several times before he successfully made it up onto the bed, he made it. Even though his sister was sometimes hissy toward him, he still tried to be her friend and never hissed back. He also assumed that everyone was a friend and never met a human he didn’t like.

A week after Tre’s death, I got a tattoo for him on my forearm. It’s a heart with three paw prints and his name. As I look at this throughout the day, I remember all the good times I had with Tre and all the lessons he taught me. I can only hope that Tre is at the Rainbow Bridge, four-legged and anxiously waiting for us to join him.

If you have recently lost a pet, here are some resources I have found to be quite helpful. The Humane Society of the United States offers this guide to coping with the loss of a pet. The guide leads you through common questions about the grieving process and suggests ways to remember your pet. One way you can do this is by giving a memorial donation in your pet's name. You can give a memorial donation to Best Friends here. You can also express your feelings and find support through an online support group. One I stumbled upon is the Rainbow Bridge, which offers members a virtual memorial home where they can "visit" their pet and light a virtual candle for them at a weekly ceremony. We chose to remember Tre through the use of a photo collage and a personalized urn. We found great choices on a web site called Peternity.

This year, my husband, Chris, and I are cutting costs by wearing costumes made up of things we already own or will most likely use again. We are going to be crazy New York Giants fans. Granted, everyday we are crazy New York Giants fans, but we usually only wear one piece of Giants clothing at a time. Now were are basically going to pile on every piece we own all at once and I'm even going to paint my nails red and blue. What are you being for Halloween?

Despite the cuteness factor, I have decided to spare my cat Anacapri from wearing a costume. But she did pose with a pumpkin, as you can see above. Dressing up your pet this Halloween? The ASPCA has posted tips for keeping your pet safe in their costume and also around all the festive activities. This includes making sure your pets stay away from all the sweets, which are bad for their tummies. If you'd like to educate others about how to have a safe Halloween with their animal companion, The First Home Forever Home campaign has created a poster to hang around your neighborhood or at your workplace. You can download it here.

Chris and I will be checking out the Halloween Parade in the Village and leaving Anacapri at home on Saturday, but there are still plenty of pet-friendly Halloween festivities going on around NYC over the next three days. You can check them out in this article, posted on the Go Local NYC News section.

If you're vegan like me and are wondering what cruelty free treats you can indulge in, VegNews has provided a list of mainstream vegan candies. My personal favorites are Sour Patch Kids, Twizzlers and Peanut Chews. Yum.

I hope you and your companion animals all have a spooky weekend.

An Introduction

Hi NYC animal lovers!

My name is Jennifer Parrucci and I am the Best Friends Network Team Leader for the NYC and NY Go Locals. I am here to help. Friend me on the Network and send me your questions, concerns and your news and events to be featured on the Go Local site. Or just drop me a line to tell me a little about yourself.

Here's a little about me. I currently live in Queens with my husband and our rescued cat Anacapri. In addition to my day job and my Best Friends volunteering, I also volunteer as an adoptions counselor at the ASPCA shelter in Manhattan and do volunteer work for Farm Sanctuary. I am vegan and enjoy exploring all of NYC's yummy vegan offerings as well as experimenting with cooking at home.

In this blog, I will share my experiences with animal issues in my everyday life and let you know what I'm excited about. I hope that you will respond and share your experiences, your hopes and dreams for animals as well.

Let the sharing begin.
