I am a geology professor at the University of New Mexico's branch campus in Gallup, NM, but I live in Albuquerque. Each week I drive back and forth on I-40. Two weeks ago I saw a dog laying in the median of the highway. When I stopped, I saw that she had been hit. I took her to a veterinary hospital in ABQ, where they found she had a shattered back leg and pelvis on her left side, and the other back leg was out of the socket. She is extremely malnourished, had just had a litter of puppies, was covered in fleas, etc. I decided to try to save her. The vet amputated her left leg and surgically set the right back leg. She is now recovering in a kennel at my home, but the bill was almost $7,000. If anyone is able/interested in helping her, please send any amount of money you can to:

"Stray" (we call her "Estrella" now)

I'm a big girl, 75 lbs., and the vet says I am Great Pyrenees and Shepherd. I am being cared for by a lady with seven pets. I don't like her cats -- or rather I like them too much -- so I'm in the yard. She runs the sprinkler all day so I don't get too hot. I'm young and frisky, too frisky for her. I am well behaved in the car; I know "sit" and "stay." She saw me interact with some young kids and a puppy. I am an angel (Oh, did I tell you I'm all white?). My foster mom will drive me to a safe new home even in TX or CO.; she loves me that much.

RE: Transport needed weekend of Aug 1-2

How many legs is is going to be? He has been with 11th Hour Rescue for over 2 years. He is currently at our shelter, but is occasionally fostered by a volunteer with 6 other dogs. If you want a buddy for your dogs, Smokey’s the best! You can see a video of Smokey at: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11162966

Smokey LOVES other dogs (he knows to be gentle with smaller ones) and is great with his foster parents, however he has “guarding issues”. Trying to “protect” his home and owners has lead to biting. He has NEVER gone after his fosterers and trusts them 100%. His caregiver can take food away from him; check his teeth, paws, mouth; give him a bath…pretty much handle him however they want. He is also crate-trained and housebroken.

Smokey is a “big puppy” who lives to play with and meet new dogs. Yard time is fun time for Smokey! His wariness about trusting people stems from low self-esteem and past abandonment. He does not show outwardly aggressive body language when nervous, which means that he would require a dog savvy home. Once Smokey bonds with you, he would never go after you – and he bonds quickly. His forever family would increase his confidence and trust as a “nervous aggression” dog. Someone who knows when company visits, he must be crated or put in another room to avoid the “guarding” behavior.

He is a great dog that deserves a chance at having a loving home, because he has so much love and loyalty to give to you!

Smokey is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccinations.

Please contact his fosterer tammy.probst.smith@gmail.com for more info.

Animals Needing Homes or Help : If this guy could talk

If Jon Jon could talk I think he would tell us that he would rather be blind, deaf, have a missing limb, or any other disability that is physical; and not his disability, which is mental. The obvious physical disability of many dogs actually helps get them adopted by very loving people whose hearts go out to special needs. But, Jon Jon's mental condition analogous to OCD or maybe ADD in humans, makes it more difficult to find that loving adopter who vows to take Jon Jon as a family member forever... no matter what. Jon Jon has taken Clomitramine in the past, but if he is not in a home environment, it is not effective (his previous fosters report that they think it made him more anxious to even take this medication). He has just been returned by his latest adopter, #6 now, and is in the worst place he could be... an indoor kennel... which exacerbates his problem. We all know, we've seen it happen to him many times. Indeed, it must be as hard in the canine world as in the human world to control or combat mental maladies and seek out patient, loving and caring souls to help you through life. If he could talk he would tell you he does not know why he feels compelled to chase small objects, animate or inanimate, but that he does so when he is aggravated by stress or when he becomes frustrated and excited. If he could talk he would most certainly be repeatedly saying, get me out of here; I cannot cope!

Please circulate the message that New Mexico Animal Friends in Albuquerque, NM is desperate to find a home for Jon Jon. Please call Linda @ 505-275-7414 or e-mail jlainsw@msn.com or Cathy @ 505-379-7844 or e-mail nmwoofer@gmail.com.

Here's all the wonderful, wonderful stuff on Jon Jon... and there is a lot! He is a very sweet, 3.5 year old neutered male Lab-Hound mix, medium-sized guy. He is great in the house with excellent manners. He is eager to please, well-behaved, house and crate-trained. He knows how to sit, come, lay down and wait. He ADORES children of all ages, especially small children 3 years or older. He is in excellent physical health and should have daily exercise. He gets along with other nice dogs, enjoys playing fetch, ball, Frisbee, and tug of war with you or another dog. He is gentle and considerate with older dogs as well. Because of his tendency to chase small things, cats are out of course. Someone with fenced acreage where he can run and play with other dogs would be excellent. he loves to play in water (pools, sprinklers, etc.).... go figure he lives in the desert...maybe he would be a good "beach dog"? Jon Jon is a very loving dog.

He is going to lose it all if something is not done soon. Please help.

Animals Needing Homes or Help : Oswald wants to retire

12 year old American Bulldog, Oswald, was rescued by me three years ago from his original family. Oswald has never been exposed to children nor other animals. His original family was going to put him down for threatening their newborn baby. I've been attempting to work with him to break him of these bad habits to no avail. Unfortunately he is still the loner dog he has always been. Every attempt at introducing him to new dogs (be it in private, public, or even out in the middle of nowhere) has escalated to the point of a snapping dominant male hulk of muscle trying to be over protective. He is easily controlled with the right harnesses but that's not enough to warrant free time with other dogs. I have never seen him snap at children, every time I get the opportunity I would introduce him to kids. Sometimes him between my legs, holding his harness. He would always allow the kids to pet him, but only briefly. He will begin to growl, low and deep no matter the tone I used or the discipline I tried.

That is the reason I need to find him a home for his retirement. My fiance and I are due to have a baby in a few months. And before that we will marry and move into her house. She has three dogs and three cats. I don't want to hide Oswald in a kennel in the back yard. He is an inside dog and requires love and affection daily.

Aside from his obvious dislike of anything that isn't an adult human he is a very well behaved and healthy dog. With adults he is 98% overly affectionate and friendly. He walks well, leashed or unleashed. Can sit or stay or lay with pretty good consistency. He's a cuddler and will gladly chase balls or frisbees. He wont fetch them for you but likes to run and chase almost anything thrown. Around the house he is calm and rarely barks. Usually only if someone pulls into the driveway or knocks unexpectedly at the door. When my fiance comes to the door he excitedly waits for me to let her in. He greets her and me with wet kisses and his pelting tail. Especially if you rub his rump. Oswald has never chewed on something that wasn't his. Never a shoe, a book, or CD....Nothing that wasnt his.

In the three years I've had him he has had no health issues requiring medical attention. Up to date on his shots, I take him yearly for checkups. Oswald does have a slight allergy. The vet gave me pills once but they dont seem to work. The only proof of his allergy is his tendency to lick his feet, which makes them dark. But never enough licking to cause hot spots. The only health condition that is a mild concern is his thyroid. This condition is easily controlled with one pill twice a day. After I rescued him I put him back on the meds and he shed 15 pounds of fat in only a few months. The pills are cheap, however he likes them only wrapped in something else. I use "Greenies brand pill pockets" (One large pocket can be separated for four pills). He is now a steady 95 pounds. I use a self feeder for him and he doesnt overeat. I only feed him high quality senior dog food (like Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul), dry biscuits for his teeth, and the occasional pizza crust. Which reminds me of his gentleness when it comes to hand feeding. If you dont let the food go when he takes food or treats from your hand, he will let go and wait patiently. No pulling or tugging or snapping for treats or food out of your hand.

I can't think of much else to say about him. A wonderful dog for a couple or a single person (with no kids or furry animals). He has been an excellent companion for the last three years and it breaks my heart to leave him.

I am willing to drive him a reasonable distance for a good retirement home (again...NO kids and NO other furry pets). Please contact me with any questions or inquiries or requests for more pictures.

Animals Needing Homes or Help : Candyman needs a home!!!

Hi,
My husband was laid off from work the day before New Years Day. We were told that Candyman has seasonal allergies, and we have tried everything that we could in the past, but the only thing that seemed to be working was the antibiotics and steroids, which I hate to keep him on, since I read it can have some aftereffects on him. Our financial situation right now is really bad. We have two kids and I want Candyman to go to a home where he can be financially taken care of due to his allergies. He is a loving dog, listens very well, he is huge, (but a big baby)!!! He also loves to eat!! If anyone has a loving home for him, please contact me!! I hate not being able to provide fully for him, but I know if someone else can take better care of him, thats all that matters.

I also want to let you know that I am in florida, but I was told by one of the NMHP specialists, that it should try to get him placed in another part of the country due to his allergies. FDA does not endorse either the product or the company.

The Hartz Mountain Corporation Voluntarily Recalls One Specific Lot of Nationwide Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips Because of Possible Health Risk
Contact:
John Mullane
(914) 712 9150

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- October 20, 2008 -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation, Secaucus, NJ is voluntarily recalling one specific lot of Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot are potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Hartz is fully cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration in this voluntary recall.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs, and, if there is cross-contamination caused by handling of the rawhide chips, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The product involved is 4,850 - 2 pound plastic bags of Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips, lot code JC23282, UPC number 3270096463 which were distributed to a national retail customer. While the normal testing that Hartz conducts through an independent outside laboratory did not detect the presence of Salmonella in any Hartz rawhide products, sample testing conducted by another laboratory did indicate the presence of the bacteria in a sample bag of the Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips. Hartz is aggressively investigating the difference in test results and the potential source of the problem.

Although Hartz has not received any reports of animals or humans becoming ill as a result of coming into contact with this product, Hartz is taking immediate steps to remove the product from all retail stores and distribution centers. Dog owners who purchased this product should check the lot code on their bag, and, if the code is not visible, or if the bag has lot code JC23282 imprinted thereon, they should immediately discontinue use of the product and discard it in a proper manner.

Consumers can contact Hartz at 1-800-275-1414 with any questions they may have and to obtain reimbursement for purchased product.

http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/hartz10_08.html

Animals Needing Homes or Help : Help me find border collie last seen at Ship Rock 8/12

Please help me find a border collie last seen 8/12 at the "wing" of Ship Rock, NM itself just off Rt. 13. It has a higher white marking running up its left leg and a white stripe down the face. Very friendly. Please post any info to this site.

I have called shelters and rescues. Farmington, NM Shelter said they had too many dogs to check. I am not in that area now to look myself. If anyone is closer and willing to look I would be very grateful. If there is a network in that area that can guide my search I hope to hear from you.
Thanks!
Maureen

Animals Needing Homes or Help : Mona Lisa the gorgeous Maine Coon needs a HOME

Mona Lisa is a gorgesou Maine Coon kitty.
