Miracle in the Making

Patrick is beating the odds and creating a wave of change

The infamous story of Patrick, has not only gained national attention, but also national outrage. How a pit-bull terrier who was tied to a stair railing on the 22nd floor of an apartment building in New Jersey ended up at the bottom of a garbage chute is beyond comprehension. Found emaciated and struggling for air, the 2-year-old pit-bull terrier fought a hard battle and won. To the astonishment of veterinarians and well-wishers alike, the tiny pit-bull terrier made it through St. Patrick’s Day, therefore becoming known as Patrick, the “Miracle Dog.”

For daily updates on Patrick’s condition, visit the Associated Humane Societies and Popcorn Park Zoo website. (Warning early images of Patrick are graphic.)

The accused abuser

Pleading not guilty to all charges of animal cruelty, 28-year-old Kisha Curtis, stated someone gave her the dog, but she was unable to care for the dog. She explained she tied him to the stair railing in hopes that someone would take him. With no regard for his safety, she then left the city, not to return for over a week. She adamantly denies throwing Patrick down the garbage chute, leading investigators to believe that there could be more than one person responsible.

The original charges against Curtis of two counts of abandonment and two counts of failure to provide proper sustenance to an animal carry a maximum sentence of six months in jail and/or $1,000 fine. However, in a surprising turn of events, Colonel Frank Rizzo of the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NJSPCA) stated that the charges were being upgraded. Quoted in the article “Patrick's Abuser's Charge Upgraded and More,” he said:

Please let this serve as an update on the Patrick the pit-bull case against Kisha Curtis. After careful consideration, we have decided to upgrade the charges against Ms. Curtis from disorderly person’s offenses to indictable offense 4:22-17 (b) 1 - torment and torture. The public must know that we will not tolerate this kind of behavior towards animals in the State of NJ and we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.”

The face of change
News of Patrick’s story, fight and survival hit Rachel Wolf, of Burbank, California, particularly hard. A lifelong animal lover, Rachel decided to take action. She founded Patrick’s Law to promote stronger animal abuse legislation in every state. The grassroots campaign received 15,000 hits on the day of its launch, and thousands of supporters continue to follow Patrick’s story.

On the website, Rachel explains the goal of the Patrick’s Law campaign:

“No animal deserves to be abused, abandoned, or neglected. It’s time to encourage and pressure your elected officials to support the upcoming bill called Patrick’s Law, where all animal abuse will be treated as a felony with lengthy prison terms and hefty fines imposed as punishment. … We will not rest until all animal abusers are in prison for their heinous and inexcusable crimes against all animal companions.”

News of Patrick’s abuse has also spurred the mayor of Newark, Cory Booker, into action. For his birthday on April 27, he has asked his family, friends and supportors to donate money to Build an Animal Shelter in Honor of Patrick. He’s employed Causes, the social networking website, to help raise $50,000 for the new facility for Newark.

Speak up against animal cruelty in your state

The first step to taking action against animal cruelty is to find out where your state ranks when it comes to protecting animals. For example, according to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, in 2010 New Jersey ranked 45th out of the 50 states. The state with the fewest number of animal protection laws, Kentucky, ranked 50th.

Another great way to start to change state legislation is through political awareness and involvement. Knowing where your legislators stand on the issues of animal cruelty and abuse is vital. Project Vote Smart, a widely popular organization focused on providing citizens with information about the people they put in office, is just the place to go to get direct answers. On the organization’s website, you can find out if your representatives support initiatives that strengthen laws against animal abusers.

I saw this when it first happened. Thank God Patrick was discovered and now because of what happened to him, it seems like there will be some changes in regard to animal welfare rights. Lots of love & hugs to Patrick and hopes for a wonderful forever home

animal cruelty and neglect have been misdemeanors for too long, we need stronger animals rights and harsher punishments and fines for abusers. Thank goodness someone had the courage to upgrade the charges against this "owner".

Our animal rights laws, are not strict enough. Many states make it a felony to abuse an animal, but that is not enough. They need to make much stricter laws, to try to deter any animal abuse. My heart goes out to Patrick. I would like to see the person who neglected him, and left him for dead-- in prison for life. Although, to me, that would be a light sentence.

I've been following Patrick's story on the website since this happened - his progress has been nothing of a miracle. Thank you so much to the two garbage collectors who found Patrick and called their boss who then called Animal Control, much thanks to the gentleman who identified the sub human who left Patrick to die, and thank you to the staff who has worked so hard to save him. Huge thanks to Rachel Wolf who has taken a tragedy and turned it into a cause and is helping to bring the plight of abused animals and pit bulls to the forefront in the news. As for Kisha Curits, may she rot in hell for all eternity. Patrick, so many love you and are sending you love and prayers every day - grow strong and healthy. There are good people out there and you will find your perfect, safe, and loving home.

I just saw my first picture of Patrick. His abuser should be crucified. No amount of prison time, is enough. How can anyone abuse an innocent animal, it is just beyond my scope of imagination.

This is the first I have heard of this story. I am so glad this sweet dog was saved! Thanks so much to the people who stepped up to the plate and saved him and thanks for the information on how to speak up for tougher laws and penalties for animal abuse.

I am so thankful that this beautiful boy is doing well. Thanks to everyone who made his rescue possible. In Canada we are all reeling from the shock of the horrific murder of 100 dogs in Whistler and are petitioning and marching for tougher legislation on animal cruelty. Our laws are over 100 years old. May we all have success in this critical mission!!

When defenseless infants and toddlers can be abused to death routinely in the U.S., when children are generally considered to be chattels by law, why should we be shocked by this story? This reminds me of the obviously post-partem, hungry young Pit mix female who was left tied to a chain link fence on a street in Yonkers, NY for hours on a winter night several years ago. No food, no water, no shelter, for this thin, obviously nursing mother. Animal Control was closed, the humane society, shelters, & rescues were not available/no help, and the only reason that the police finally came & picked up the poor dog was a neighbor's calls which culminated in her emphasizing that this was a "pit bull!" on the street. Never mind that she was very sweet & grateful for the water & food given to her... no one came to get her out of the cold until the common stereotype was finally used to generate a response.

This story has touched my heart from the second I heard it and I'm just obsessed with this little guy! I check his facebook page every day just to see how he's doing. I think it's great that the country/world seems to be at a place where the welfare of animals is becoming a priority. Thank God for social networking sites and sites such as this one here for Best Friends, where people can come together and get the word out. I think people who see stories like Patrick's for example are horrified and really do want to do something to help. Thankfully in Patrick's case people came out of the wood work and are praying for and loving this deserving little boy! We love you Patrick!

#1} How can anyone be anything but THRILLED that Patrick has somehow found the will to survive this unspeakable, unimagineable horrific abuse, neglect and torture? I am beyond words to describe my happiness at Patrick's recovery.... #2} I am so relieved that the charges against this @&*% have been upgraded {although I don't think the laws anywhere are strict enough}. We must all work to change the laws. Recent stories like Daniel and Snoop and other stories like Mercy and Tiger Lily who have paid the ultimate price for human indecency and ignorance must stop. #3} I'd like to speak directly to everyone {no one who has posted here but I've read other stories on the internet} who has expressed an interest in eventually adopting Patrick: Please go to your local shelter and rescue group today to consider adopting one or two of the hundreds of thousands of animals who are also waiting for their forever homes. I understand that people can be attracted to the hardcore, most agonizing public cases of animal abuse and want to help so desperately {and that is SUCH a wonderful thing to do}, but there are so, so many other animals who are just as deserving.... I read a story not too long ago about a shelter/rescue group that could have adopted out every single animal in their facility if the potential adopters had been told they were Katrina survivors. Of course they could not do that but it underlines peoples desire to help the most hardcore victims of abuse, neglect and torture... #4} Thank you and kudos to EVERYONE involved in saving Patrick.....every single one of them is worth the effort, worth the time and worth saving.........

great article... just please credit to the proper people... John and Coty at the Patrick Miracle page who brought Patrick to the attention of the world. All of the 60+ Facebook Patrick Movement page admins and worker bees (all volunteers) who are changing laws locally in their states and Giving a Gift from Patrick this weekend (donating and volunteering at local shelters 4 Patrick)... Your HUGE THANKS belong to them... not from this one: who ridicules, insults, calls people names, abuses, harasses, slanders and has elected herself the leader of a movement started without her? who bans, deletes, shuts down other people's comments on a regular basis, refuses to answer ANY questions, lies, and rants and rages about Bill Maher and others for seemingly no reason? who trolls the Internet looking for enemies all day long? who has not done one damn thing to help animals especially NOT Patrick and seeks to garner all sorts of glory, exploit and profit from a poor abused starved dog? who said 3-4 weeks ago that she had a trademark on the name PatricksLaw when she just applied for one this week (and it takes 6-8 months and she may not be approved)? who has said repeatedly that she is starting a non-profit but also wants to BRAND Patrick, sell OFFICIAL MERCHANDISE and own a trademark? who has proven that she knows nothing about laws and how to get them passed? who has not once supported ANYONE in the National Movement and in fact has done everything in her power to distract, obstruct and impede progress, wanting everyone to STOP EVERYTHING and applaud her ? who has a wall of shame of good people who have told the truth about her? who has written vile and hateful blog posts about people in the National Movement? who has admins who work for her for free who she abuses, terrorizes and fires? her most loyal admin got 'fired" (if one can fire someone that they do not pay) because the admin put up a pic badge that had the words National Movement on it. who is on a mission to destroy the spontaneous and beautiful worldwide and national PATRICK MOVEMENT while claiming SHE IS THE ONE doing what exactly and specifically? exactly WHAT HAS SHE DONE for the Patrick Movement besides harass, abuse, torment, lie, slander, insult, wanting everyone else to do the actual WORK so she can waltz in and claim the credit FOR DOING NOTHING CONSTRUCTIVE, and everything DESTRUCTIVE... who is a serial cyberbully who has done all of the above to other animal loving groups before (now why does she pick animal lovers, huh?) who stalks people online at all hours of the day and night? who hates animals and people that love animals and want to help them? who has a criminal record? who is a bankrupt, failed actress, miserable singer, and horrible excuse for a human being? who gets her jollies out of terrorizing people? and why the heck is Facebook allowing her to do all of this to 50,000-100,000+ people on Facebook???? what is her blog about? Rachel Wolf what is her PatricksLawNow Facebook page about? Rachel Wolf

comment from Cathie... I hadn't been following the Patrick saga closely, but a friend posted the Philadelphia Examiner story about the allegations against the Patrick's Law Facebook page moderator. The name Rachel Wolf jumped out immediately. I tangled with her after the Conklin Dairy video from Mercy for Animals came out last summer. About five anti-Conklin pages sprang up, one of which was moderated by Rachel. She asked me to co-moderate, and thank god I said no. Maybe I could sense that while I was a volunteer, she would be treating me like an underling. She bullied and harassed some of the people who posted on the page, but the page never got much attention, and she must have moved on. However, we were Facebook friends for awhile until she got into a huge knock-down drag-out fight with one of my friends on my personal page in a post about the BP oil spill. She lashed out with a bunch of fuck-yous to everyone and unfriended me. I had been nothing but polite to her and was not sorry to see her go.

by The Patrick Movement Calgary, Alberta on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 12:16pm IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING THE PATRICK'S LAW PAGE   I had put up a post about changing display pictures on the Patrick's Law page, and she immediately removed my post. I was only trying to help. Today I went on and I have been removed from their 'like' list. Please join your local "movement' page, and any others. A lot of people are 'unlinking' the Patrick's Law page, due to the administration. I suggest people do the same, and get their information from people who care about animals rather than trying to profit or get into the spotlight for their own personal gain. I have tagged as many of you as I can, but please feel free to tag any others that I have missed.

I have heard many many complaints about the treatment of animal lovers by Rachel Wolf. Thank you for getting involved. Please be cautious and thank you again. Roseann Trezza, Executive Director AHS (Associated Humane Society)
