Have you ever learned about some awful abuse or neglect and wondered “How can that be legal? Isn’t there a law against that?” If you answered "YES" then the Humane Society Legislative Fund is running a contest that you DEFINITELY want to join! It's called the "There Oughta Be a Law" contest and with a click of the mouse and only a few key strokes, you can recommend that piece of legislation you always wanted to see enacted. There's no legislative background needed, you don't even need to know who your congress people are (but we know all Best Friend Network Members do!).
The HSLF believes personal compelling stories often result in some of the best legislation. As Best Friends Network Members, we are all more engaged and aware of the abuses than most. What a great opportunity to use our awareness and make a difference. Up to 31 August 2009, 1200 entries have been received (yes, I submitted 2!). Please add yours to the contest before 5 October 2009.
The winning entry will be selected by a panel of judges including legislators and lobbyists, and will be announced on October 25th. The winner will receive an exciting two-day trip to the nation’s capital that will include a meeting with Mike Markarian, President Humane Society Legislative Fund and the rest of the HSLF staff to discuss his or her proposed bill, a visit to Capitol Hill to lobby federal lawmakers and congressional staff with us, a special feature in an upcoming edition of the bimonthly newsletter “Humane Activist,” and an opportunity to see the sights of Washington, D.C What could be more exciting?
