Then Tyson may be your guy. Tyson is an American Bulldog. This breed is a member of the mastiff family, and they were created to be athletic guard dogs and working hunters of large game. An American Bulldog’s job description is protection of its property and family with fearless determination. They can and will think for themselves, are obstinate and dominant, and want to be the boss in any situation. While Tyson takes his job seriously, he also has a very sweet, loving side with his special people. At two-and-a-half years old he is now fully an adult, and is seeking new owners who have experience with this or similar breeds. Tyson has successfully completed Basic Manners training and knows many commands. After some bonding time with his new owners, Tyson would excel in the shelter’s Advanced Manners class and has all the makings of a AKC Canine Good Citizen. He responds well to confident leadership and positive reinforcement. Tyson’s new home must be one with kids over 12 years of age and a securely fenced yard. He’s been known to chase neighborhood cats and gets along well with some female dogs. He needs a grain-free diet due to allergies. Tyson is an impressive and temperamentally appropriate representative of his breed. If American Bulldogs are your breed, and you have experience, come in for an introduction in our play yard.

Since mid July, Tyson has been living in a foster home, as he was deteriorating at the shelter. Here is an update: Handsome Tyson scored a foster mom this past week and has been enjoying himself during their afternoon outings together. Tyson gets along fabulously with her three male dogs and a female puppy. Check out the great photos of Tyson running around with his new pals and having a ball! Tyson has done pretty well with his foster mom’s cats and was able to ignore the slow moving felines completely, although he did enjoy a friendly game of “chase” with one of the spunkier family cats. We think Tyson could live with a dog-savvy cat and would enjoy sharing his home with another dog. Extra smart, eager to please, and the ultimate cuddler, Tyson deserves a loving family that will allow him to be the super star we know he can be!

For more information, please contact the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland at (207) 854-9771 or email me at pbeattie@arlgp.org. Don't let this special guy pass you by.

Shara and I have been working hard; we have made a valiant effort to help our neighborhood shelter the Cocheco Valley Humane Society win a desperately needed makeover, and well, it did not work out. They did not win a makeover, but we made allot of wonderful new friends who are animal lovers, and hopefully we can take the momentum from the makeover contest and run with it.

NHSPCA is just buzzing; they are doing absolutely marvelous work with aiding in closing shelters and rescue dogs. The annual PAWS Walk is in full gear and participation is looking really good. This is a great annual event that helps raise desperately needed funds for the animals and it is just a plain great day to be with some of the wonderful staff and volunteers of the NHSPCA, as well as its supporters and best of all, their DOGS!

In these ever challenging times, I was trying to think of another creative way to raise funds for the NHSPCA. Well I am very blessed and I thought, what would motivate people to give back to the animals and came up with.....Give them something back.

So Shara and I are part of a Silent Auction for Mothers Day, I am attaching a link if you would like to check it out. All proceeds will go straight to the animals at the NHSPCA and it's just a fun way to fundraise....Here is the link

http://www.nhspca.org/events/MothersDayAuction.htm

So if you would like to take a chance and help the animals at the same time, make a bid. Go on, it's fun........Do you feel lucky?

Working together for New Hampshire animals : Dog-Friendly Chow Mix Seeks Forever Home – Please Cross-Post!

Smokey is an active and healthy 6-years-young Chow/Shepherd/Rotti mix. He has been with 11th Hour Rescue for over 2 years. He is currently at our shelter, but is occasionally fostered by a volunteer with 6 other dogs. If you want a buddy for your dogs, Smokey’s the best! You can see a video of Smokey at: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11162966

Smokey LOVES other dogs (he knows to be gentle with smaller ones) and is great with his foster parents, however he has “guarding issues”. Trying to “protect” his home and owners has lead to biting. He has NEVER gone after his fosterers and trusts them 100%. His caregiver can take food away from him; check his teeth, paws, mouth; give him a bath…pretty much handle him however they want. He is also crate-trained and housebroken.

Smokey is a “big puppy” who lives to play with and meet new dogs. Yard time is fun time for Smokey! His wariness about trusting people stems from low self-esteem and past abandonment. He does not show outwardly aggressive body language when nervous, which means that he would require a dog savvy home. Once Smokey bonds with you, he would never go after you – and he bonds quickly. His forever family would increase his confidence and trust as a “nervous aggression” dog. Someone who knows when company visits, he must be crated or put in another room to avoid the “guarding” behavior.

He is a great dog that deserves a chance at having a loving home, because he has so much love and loyalty to give to you!

Smokey is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccinations.

Please contact his fosterer tammy.probst.smith@gmail.com for more info.

Time to Vote

Lets help Best Friends win first prize this year:

Here is the link http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=3

Here is the deal:

Welcome to The Animal Rescue Site $100,000 Shelter Challenge — together with Petfinder.com.

Now you can help The Animal Rescue Site choose which eligible Petfinder.com animal rescue organizations will receive special funds to help animals! People have asked me why I set our goal so high ($5,000.00), and I tell them, the need for our shelters, rescues and sanctuaries is high, and getting higher every day, so why not $5,000.00. I want to truly thank those who have taken the challenge so far, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

We have also been very busy trying to help another local shelter Cocheco Valley Humane Society, win a $1,000,000 Makeover on Zootoo. When we began (late, I am sad to say) CVHS was ranked at #52. I am proud to say, that at the close of Phase II, we ended in the #30 spot. Some may say, well you did not make the Top 20 so they don't have a chance, they lost. Well, a true enough statement , but I prefer to look at the positive, #30 out of hundreds (close to a thousand) of shelters, from all over the country, some with tens of thousands of supporters all working for their shelter, well #30 is something to be proud of. Also #30 is something we can build on, hopefully, all of us who did try very hard to win CVHS the makeover, will not stop here, but take that #30 and build on it ourselves, and see what we can make happen. After all CVHS still really does need improvements in the building so they can further help the thousands of animals they place each year.

And, I am very happy to say that in my little tiny community and circle of friends, the awareness and support to Best Friends is increasing at a steady rate. I keep handing out the monthly magazine, sharing sanctuary stories, and I have been telling anyone who will listen that the new episodes of Dog Town starts March 20th, hey that's what got me here, so maybe if I can get some more people to watch, promising them they will cry a little but smile allot, who knows we may just get even more new members.

Shara, Pippit and I will keep on thinking positive, keep on doing what we can, and keep on praying for Best Friends to reach their ultimate goal of No More Homeless Pets.... Till next time

This Awareness Stuff Can Be Pretty Difficult

Well Shara and I started our Manicure for Mutts Challenge in November of 2008. We have been working hard trying to spread the word, trying to get our community involved. Our real goal is to promote awareness and motivate people, one individual at a time, to ask themself, is there something I can do.

We were watching the News and learned of a couple shelters not to far from us that had to close due to a lack of funding. We have been working hard to try and win a makeover for our local Cocheco Valley Humane Society, they really need one, they are so dedicated and compassionate, but in a tiny rundown facility. So far it does not look like we will make the cut, but we'll keep going.

We also are spreading the word about a real hardship the NHSPCA has right this very minute with so many rescued horses. If you have been watching the BF Network News and if you watch closely to your own local shelter news you can see the need is as great as ever but sponsorships and donations are down.

It was a fear that I had starting not when the word "Recession" first started being said out loud in the news, but as early as last year at this time.

I am urging all to check the Best Friends Wish list and the Wish List of a local Shelter in your area and if at all possible pick up even one item and send it to Best Friends or bring it to your area shelter, please.

I am planning an outing today myself, it is snowing and freezing here in the Northeast so what better way to warm the soul.

While there bringing items from the wish list I hope to have a sit down with a Director to discuss an idea I have for a raffle to raise funds. Wish me luck and I'll keep you updated on the idea and the progress.

By the way, all my friends gave me nail care products for Christmas so there will be no way I can stop my Manicure for Mutts Challenge.

But the sponsorships and donations they made to the animals means so much more, I sincerely hope they know how much their support means to me and the animals they have helped!

So thank you, thank you, thank you.

Working together for New Hampshire animals : Missing Black Lab (Trigger) - Just Moved from NH to MA

Missing Black Lab (Trigger) in North Andover, MA since 1/2/09
Trigger, a Black Lab, is missing from Salem Street in North Andover, MA (the town borders Middleton, Boxford, Haverhill, Andover and Lawrence).

He has an orange collar on with New Hampshire tags (he just moved from Canterbury, NH to Massachusetts). She has been living alone in an apartment for almost a year. Someone comes and feeds and walks her twice a day and that is it. No companionship, not even television or radio. She was abandoned by a man who was severely
depressed and put his social life before anything. He ended up in a psyche ward and now jail for DUI. By all appearances Maggie has never been to the vet. Her landlord hasn't rented the apartment because Maggie is there, she comes and walks her and feeds her twice a day. She can't live with other dogs and the landlord has two. Maggie has had zero socialization and now a year of no regular companionship.

A wonderful dog trainer, Sean Murphy, came with me to meet her on 12/24/08. He gave her a full temperament evaluation. She is SO much better than I intitially thought. A really trainable dog with a very sweet disposition. Her problems stem from her lack of socialization. She is an older girl, not sure how old, maybe 8ish? She will be getting much needed vet care. Her gums bleed and she has sores on her feet. I'm sure she hasn’t seen a vaccine in years. My hope is that she will be able to go right into foster or forever home right after vet which will probably be 1/14/09. But after weeks of trying she has no home to go to and will go back to the apartment. Starting training with her will be difficult as there won't be anyone with her to keep up her training. Some people have volunteered to spend time with her as they are able. She is currently in Concord, Mass. I am in Boston. I am also accepting donations for all of her care. Maggie will be euthanized if brought to a shelter as she needs a lot of care and rehabilitation as both the landlord and I have been in touch with a few different ones, so it’s up to us to help her. She has suffered enough, she will get her happy ending. If you do not care about your donation being tax-deductible then send a donation to me directly at:

althea mclaughlin
70 jamaica street
jamaica plain, ma 02130

donations can be tax-deductible through my sister's rescue, please note the
donation is for maggie:

via PayPal: www.paypal.com - donation made to woof@animalrescuefront.net

via snail mail:
Animal Rescue Front c/o Chris McLaughlin
103 East Hawley Road
Hawley , MA 01339

you can also donate directly to the veterinarian in RI who is vetting her at a significant discount or to the kennel where maggie will be taken care of after her vetting for a few days before going back to the apartment:

please make it out to the vet or kennel but send to bethany who is coordinating maggie's vetting so that we can keep track of donations on her behalf:
Dr. Michelle Bouliane c/o Bethany Hickey, Po Box 509, Portsmouth, RI 02871
The Barking Lot c/o Bethany Hickey, Po Box 509, Portsmouth, RI 02871

The most important thing I need right now is a home, foster or forever. If there is ANYONE who can help...She cannot go with cats or dogs. Please go to www.pitbuluv.com to read a copy of the official evaluation the trainer performed and feel free to direct people there to see info on Maggie including pix and evaluation. But I do believe 2009 will be filled with challenges. We need to continue efforts for No More Homless Pets, Stop Breed Discrimination and as always continue to keep awareness for Best Friends and all the wonderful work they do.

Let's take the free opportunity on the Animal Rescue Site http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=3

You can make a click each day and provide food for a shelter animal and it is completely FREE! Also, let's show our support and maybe they will do another contest in 2009. Best Friends received $11,000 last year, hopefully we can take first place in 2009 and win them $25,000.

And I would be remiss if I did not ask you all to take my Manicure for Mutts Challenge, sponsor an animal at Best Friends. Pick your favorite, follow their progress, and hope they find their new forever home and family .

I have put my money where my mouth is, and I hope you will join me. God bless and may we all have a healthy, happy and great New Year .

Working together for New Hampshire animals : Rindge NH: 2 Ferrets Seek Home ASAP -- they're cold & lonely!

Please use contact info provided below; contact does not use the Network!

2 Ferrets with recent vet check (October 2008) seek a permanent loving home ASAP.

Anoki ( M) 5 years and Little Girl (F) 3 years are residing in a 3 story condo which has had to be moved to an insulated chicken coop in Rindge.

2 Household members have a severe allergy to the ferrets, thus they cannot remain in the house. It is people like Kara, who care deeply about the welfare of animals who inspire me.

Just think about it for a minute, on Thanksgiving as we all sat and enjoyed spending time with our families and loved ones, staff and volunteers all across the country were spending their time caring for and helping animals at Best Friends, shelters and rescue leagues.

This dedication deserves our support, and all the staff and volunteers at Best Friends, the shelters and rescue leagues have my deepest admiration, so simply Thank You. Thank you for being who you are and doing what you do, you are examples of the best we human kind have to offer.

So please, take the Manicure for Mutts Challenge. Let us together make certain all the helpless, homeless, sick or injured animals at Best Friends and shelters all across the country don't become another statistic in this bad economy. Let's support all of the staff and volunteers who give of themselves to care for these animals, they too deserve our appreciation.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hoping you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving.
