Saving Sin City's Cats Bootcamp

November 03, 2009, 10:57AM MT
By Best Friends staff
Saturday, November 14 in Las Vegas

On November 14, Shelly Kotter, specialist for Best Friends’ Focus on Felines campaign, is holding a camp in Las Vegas for anyone interested in helping free-roaming cats.

Dubbed Saving Sin City’s Cats, this free, one day camp will show people how to help cats by offering individuals and groups the tools and assistance they need to succeed.

Attendees will learn about trap/neuter/return (TNR) techniques, nuisance control, working with neighbors, animal control, feral cat care and management.

Saving Sin City’s Cats includes a trap-trading program that allows individuals to borrow a humane trap by putting a deposit on it and receive training on how to catch community cats. The program also provides referrals to low-cost veterinarians in the area willing to give discounts for spays and neuters.

Says Kotter, “Over 70 people attended the last camp we had.  And more people have contacted us for information.” She adds, “It’s really exciting to see people sign up and then help cats in need.”

So far, the Sin City program has trapped, neutered or spayed, then returned 20 cats to their colonies, says Kotter.

Individuals like Yolanda Cisneros have attended the camp. So far, she’s caught four 5-month-old cats, had them spayed and vaccinated at a low-cost veterinarian, and then found them homes.

“People are utilizing this program and saving lives as we speak,” says Kotter. “They want to help these cats.”

Loved the Boot Camp. It was great to meet lots of individual people (not really with any group) who were looking for information about how to help the cats that they knew about.
