Since this is a budget issue and they are looking to save money I have stressed the issue in each of my letters that it will end up costing the state MORE money if we let these commercial kennels go uncheck.

This special session is all about money. For you and I is an issue of heart and morality but not for them. For them it is all about MONEY. Talk about how they will end up spending more!!!

I volunteered to testify on Monday if they wish me to do so!

The Animals Need Nebraska Pet Lovers to Act Now

A new law has been introduced in the Nebraska Legislature that will no longer
require regular inspections of commercial kennels. Instead the inspection of
puppy mills will go back to being complaint driven only. Thousands of dogs and
puppies will suffer horribly if this is allowed to happen. All too often, puppy
mills sell their puppies only through the internet. That means no one ever sees
the hell where the breeding dogs live. No one can see the horrors that the dogs
or cats are forced to endure - tiny cages, wire floors, living in their own
***, filthy water too thick to drink, never seeing the sun, never feeling
grass to run in, never getting the most basic care. WE SIMPLY MUST ACT
NOW. The hearing for this bill is Monday. THERE IS NO TIME TO
WASTE.

LB 6 was introduced by Senator Tom Carlson. It will make the regular
inspection of puppy mills go away. Inspection prior to obtaining a license --
gone. Horrible pain and suffering -- here to stay! Please contact (e-mail or
by phone) the members of the Agriculture Committee listed below. Ask them to
kill LB 6 now - do not let it get out of committee. Because the special
session is so short, there is no time to waste! The animals need you. Be
polite, thank their staff members who answer the phone for their time, but ask
that LB 6 be killed in committee.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU
KNOW! IF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US CONTACTS THE MEMBERS OF THIS COMMITTEE, WE
CAN GET IT KILLED. Now is the time to show the legislature that the animal
lovers of Nebraska do not want Nebraska to become known as a puppy mill state
ever again - ACT RIGHT NOW! PLEASE!

From the thousands of animals
whose lives have been made better by the State inspectors --Thank you!

My veterinarian recently had a client bring her a stray cat that he had found on his front porch from over in Council Bluffs. The cat was injured and he offered to pay for all her medical expenses. I agreed to foster her. They attempted to cast the leg in the hopes that the swelling would go down and the infection could be treated thus only worrying about the crushed "wrist" bones the cat had.

I took her back one week later to reexamine and at that time the infection had worsened and basically when she took the cast off it the leg and the bones were still horribly damaged so she amputated.

The injuries were caused by some kind of animal attacking the cat (who I named Cassidy) and who knows what other traumas this cat suffered prior to her rescuer finding her.

The main problem is not that this is now a 3 legged cat. She is learning to get around ok and is extremely friendly when she is not terrified. The problem is that she is terrified of almost anything. I have her in a small room here and she is quite content to live in that small room with no interaction from other cats. She was very frightened of my "herd" at first but pretty much now just ignores them and tries to pretend they do not exist. When my husband enters the room, she ducks and hides and tries to make herself small until he sweet talks her and then convinces her he is a nice person. Kids - don't get me started.....

If you just hang with her or bring her wet food she is just the sweetest cat and will spend hours rolling on the floor, loving on me, purring and just can't get enough of the attention I give her.

Sadly she is NOT a candidate for adoption through any of the regular channels as she is just too nervous out in public. What she needs is someone that has a quiet loving home that she can just be a bug on the wall in while she learns to adapt to her new situation.

The vet estimates that she is just under 1 year old. She is all up to date medically and just looking for a great new home.

If you know anyone out there looking for a great cat that is a bit of a fixer upper, please let me know!

I have heard people say things like "I just don't have the time." or "I don't have the money to donate right now." or even "I am ready to help, but I don't know how!"

Ginger Luke of Ginger's Pet Rescue has complied a great list of 102 ways that you can support shelters and rescues.

If you cannot adopt or foster a dog, could you help:

1. An additional 74 animals were confirmed dead. Necropsy results on a number of these animals revealed significant fat and muscle atrophy, which is consistent with starvation.

Jason Maduna, the ranch's owner, was arrested on one count of felony animal cruelty, but additional charges are expected. The animals are now recuperating at their temporary home at the Bridgeport Rodeo Grounds. The Humane Society of the United States, Habitat for Horses and Front Range Equine Rescue have been working alongside the Bureau of Land Management and area veterinarians to feed, treat, and assess the 220 animals, including a number of foals born since the seizure. According to Jerry Finch of Habitat for Horses, "the outpouring of support from the local community is humbling. From home-cooked meals for the volunteers, to hay provided by the local Farm Bureaus, we could not ask for more
or better support."

Of the 220 animals at the Fairgrounds, 22 have been identified by their owners and will be returned to them. The remaining animals are available for placement with qualified individuals or groups. Those interested, should contact Hillary Wood of Front Range Equine Rescue at 719-481-1490. The horses have all received a negative Coggins and have been dewormed, vaccinated and microchipped. Finch strongly cautions that they are looking for those with experience in handling and training wild mustangs. According to Finch, "these are not back yard ponies."

A dedicated website has been setup which includes photographs and descriptions of the available animals, as well as forms and contact numbers. He has been with 11th Hour Rescue for over 2 years. He is currently at our shelter, but is occasionally fostered by a volunteer with 6 other dogs. If you want a buddy for your dogs, Smokey’s the best! You can see a video of Smokey at: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11162966

Smokey LOVES other dogs (he knows to be gentle with smaller ones) and is great with his foster parents, however he has “guarding issues”. Trying to “protect” his home and owners has lead to biting. He has NEVER gone after his fosterers and trusts them 100%. His caregiver can take food away from him; check his teeth, paws, mouth; give him a bath…pretty much handle him however they want. He is also crate-trained and housebroken.

Smokey is a “big puppy” who lives to play with and meet new dogs. Yard time is fun time for Smokey! His wariness about trusting people stems from low self-esteem and past abandonment. He does not show outwardly aggressive body language when nervous, which means that he would require a dog savvy home. Once Smokey bonds with you, he would never go after you – and he bonds quickly. His forever family would increase his confidence and trust as a “nervous aggression” dog. Someone who knows when company visits, he must be crated or put in another room to avoid the “guarding” behavior.

He is a great dog that deserves a chance at having a loving home, because he has so much love and loyalty to give to you!

Smokey is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccinations.

Please contact his fosterer tammy.probst.smith@gmail.com for more info.

RE: Donation Drive in Bellevue

I would love to be part of that effort. My name is Wendy Kluball and I live in LaVista, NE (A hop and skip down the road from you). My husband is also in the military. I am an animal lover and have two dogs of my own. I am a new member to the Yappy Pack. This is a volunteer group that hosts fundraising events for animal groups. We mainly work with raising money for the local Nebraska Human Society. They do not have a website, but on Saturdays from 10:30am-1:30pm we gather together along with those that aren’t members at the Ralston Veterinary Clinic and allow our dogs to run around and socialize with each other as long as they are sociable. 10:30am-12:30pm is for all dogs but there are some pretty big ones, so from 12:30pm -1:30pm it is more small dog oriented. I thought I would share some ideas I had about getting something put together.

- Try and get with a Vet Office/Pet Mart and see if they would allow the use of their parking lot or lobby or something to host the effort.
- Plan to do a Dog/Cat bake sale, wash, maybe see if you are able to find an Office that will host to do free nail trimming for a donation.
- Put out flyers once it is planned out.
- Get volunteers to bake animal treats
- Give an incentive: What I mean by this is my husband has also picked up photography as a hobby and would probably volunteer to take pet photos with enough notice. Or the Free nail clipping example.

Those are just a few, but let me know what you think and I would love to organize with you.

Shelter & Rescue List.xls

Working together for Nebraska animals : Donation Drive in Bellevue

My husband and I would like to do a donation drive for best friends animal society. We have been staying in a wonderful foster home with a nice lady, 2 small dogs, and some adult cats. We would like to stay together, as we have been housemates our entire life. Is your heart big enough to love us both?

This has been a tough year for these 2 and they are just looking for love and a cozy warm lap. FDA does not endorse either the product or the company.

The Hartz Mountain Corporation Voluntarily Recalls One Specific Lot of Nationwide Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips Because of Possible Health Risk
Contact:
John Mullane
(914) 712 9150

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- October 20, 2008 -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation, Secaucus, NJ is voluntarily recalling one specific lot of Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot are potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Hartz is fully cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration in this voluntary recall.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs, and, if there is cross-contamination caused by handling of the rawhide chips, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The product involved is 4,850 - 2 pound plastic bags of Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips, lot code JC23282, UPC number 3270096463 which were distributed to a national retail customer. While the normal testing that Hartz conducts through an independent outside laboratory did not detect the presence of Salmonella in any Hartz rawhide products, sample testing conducted by another laboratory did indicate the presence of the bacteria in a sample bag of the Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips. Hartz is aggressively investigating the difference in test results and the potential source of the problem.

Although Hartz has not received any reports of animals or humans becoming ill as a result of coming into contact with this product, Hartz is taking immediate steps to remove the product from all retail stores and distribution centers. Dog owners who purchased this product should check the lot code on their bag, and, if the code is not visible, or if the bag has lot code JC23282 imprinted thereon, they should immediately discontinue use of the product and discard it in a proper manner.

Consumers can contact Hartz at 1-800-275-1414 with any questions they may have and to obtain reimbursement for purchased product.

http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/hartz10_08.html

Working together for Nebraska animals : Pierre needs a home!

Hi - I'm Pierre! My human mom rescued me as a kitten when I was dumped in the woods with my 4 litter mates. I was lucky enough to go home with her, and have been neutered and front declawed.

The last 10 years have been great, but now my circumstances have changed - we moved, Mom got married, added a dog & baby to our family. I haven't adjusted well and have been "marking" inappropriately.

I need a new home - one where I will get more attention. I've lived with a dog and my brother, but have never been around other cats.

Please won't someone give me a loving home? TJ is a 13-year-old Persian who had pretty much been relegated to living in small bathroom without much human contact. I pulled him out of that house and he is with me now, but my two cats can't deal with him. It's causing lots of tension and fighting. He's in pretty good health, he's neutered and declawed and has rabies and distemper shots. He really is a nice cat - He just wants someone to be nice to him. He should probably be an "only" cat, unless other cats in the household are easy-going. He tends to trail the other cats around and does not know when to back off. He doesn't instigate fights, he's just curious.

Here's the link to his catster profile:
http://www.catster.com/cats/863866

Working together for Nebraska animals : Norfolk Ne rental needed

I am trying to help a family with a small dog find a place to rent in Norfolk. A house, apartment, town house. They need at least 2 bedrooms. They need this as soon as possible. They will be moving from Iowa and want to get there in time for the start of school.

I placed the dog with them 8 months ago. They are really good with the dog. He is just 10 months old, potty trained, friendly, cute as a bug. Even knows some tricks. They love the dog, he is a cairn terrier & miniature poodle mix. If they don't find a place to live I will have to take him back and I am over the city limit now. I don't know how I would explain dog number 7. Plus my husband is having a cow just thinking about having another dog. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

crickettk@mchsi.com

BF volunteer Sac City Iowa
