The adoptable cats were usually stray or relinquished by owner. A month ago, I accepted 5 cats from one single household. Two of them were diagnosed FIV positive through my routine FeLV and FIV screening. I work in a veterinary clinic as a vet tech, so I know the details about the route of cross infection and the long term prognosis of FIV cats. That's the reason I insist to find homes for them instead of euthanized them. They are approximately 8 years old, in good body condition, they should still have some good years ahead of them. I heard several happy endings for some FIV positive cats, I sure hope that will happen to Trouble and Blackie too. They are housed in an outdoor enclosure right now, with a warm sheep skin bed. However, winter is coming and pretty soon the bed is not going to be warm enough for Montana harsh weather. I really would love to hear from somebody, who is willing give them a warm inside home. Not just that, but lots of love and care for the rest of their lives. By the way, they are very affectionate, would love to have tons of tummy rub.

For all the Best Friends Fans, please help me to spread out the words. If anyone wants to meet these 2 very lovable cats, please e-mail me at eutopia@bresnan.net or call Ivy at 406-465-7246. I am sure we can set up a time for your visit.

Sadly, our list of trapped pet incidents continues to grow. Traps do not discriminate. Landmines await year round on our public land for any poor creature unlucky enough to get caught. Footloose Montana offers Trapped Pet Release Workshops to educate the public to try to reduce their pet's potential injury or even its tragic death from a trap. Footloose Montana is working on an inititative to ban trapping on public land in Montana. Chapters are forming across the state to help end this cruel, unnecessary and inhumane practice. He has been with 11th Hour Rescue for over 2 years. He is currently at our shelter, but is occasionally fostered by a volunteer with 6 other dogs. If you want a buddy for your dogs, Smokey’s the best! You can see a video of Smokey at: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11162966

Smokey LOVES other dogs (he knows to be gentle with smaller ones) and is great with his foster parents, however he has “guarding issues”. Trying to “protect” his home and owners has lead to biting. He has NEVER gone after his fosterers and trusts them 100%. His caregiver can take food away from him; check his teeth, paws, mouth; give him a bath…pretty much handle him however they want. He is also crate-trained and housebroken.

Smokey is a “big puppy” who lives to play with and meet new dogs. Yard time is fun time for Smokey! His wariness about trusting people stems from low self-esteem and past abandonment. He does not show outwardly aggressive body language when nervous, which means that he would require a dog savvy home. Once Smokey bonds with you, he would never go after you – and he bonds quickly. His forever family would increase his confidence and trust as a “nervous aggression” dog. Someone who knows when company visits, he must be crated or put in another room to avoid the “guarding” behavior.

He is a great dog that deserves a chance at having a loving home, because he has so much love and loyalty to give to you!

Smokey is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccinations.

Please contact his fosterer tammy.probst.smith@gmail.com for more info.

Working together for Montana animals : Dogs to be put down on Friday

Any rescues wanting to assist in taking dogs, but have not worked with me before, will need to supply me with info. on their rescue. They were pulled from people who abandoned them last summer in their trailer without food or water. They were gone for a few weeks and wanted to have them to breed to their other pit bull. They are about 1-11/2 years old. Very loving. One is spayed and the other is soon to be spayed. They are both current on their shots. Both very loving and want so much to please. Only problem is that they like to chase livestock so they should not be around any livestock. I am a foster "mom" for a vet clinic here in town who rehomes the dogs from the pound. So I would like to find new homes for these two girls. Adoption fee is $75.00 each to qualified people. Please call 406-951-2100 if you are interested or can help with these two wonderful dogs. Photos of the dogs are on Petfinders under zipcode 59301 or East Main Vet Clinic Miles City. Thanks, Janet

Heading to Browning this summer and need help with the feral dogs!

I am trying to gather information about helping the wild dogs of the Blackfeet Reservation in East Glacier. I spent the summer in East Glacier last year and plan on returning again to help the dog community there. What I saw last year was heartbreaking and has haunted me since I left Montana. In the streets of East Glacier and Browning there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of dogs that run the streets in the most horrible condition. They are starving, injured and aggressive. While I was there I saw so many starving dogs attacking each other for food, being hit by cars and often laying near the town dump waiting to die from their injuries. It was so very sick to see this happening in a high profile "tourist" area. I have since called or emailed every animal rescue league on the Blackfeet reservation's website. Not ONE, not one organization is still functioning on the reservation as of 2009. The phones were disconnected and the one agency I did speak with was going out of business due to finances.
I would like to start raising money to begin a neuter/spay program this summer and I need help getting started. I need to find a vet who will work on the cheap for a good cause and raise money for cages, food and other equiptment. I am not sure if I can start a non-profit organization because it sounds difficult? Any help would be great.

Heading to Browning this summer and need help with the feral dogs!

I am trying to gather information about helping the wild dogs of the Blackfeet Reservation in East Glacier. While the normal testing that Hartz conducts through an independent outside laboratory did not detect the presence of Salmonella in any Hartz rawhide products, sample testing conducted by another laboratory did indicate the presence of the bacteria in a sample bag of the Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips. Hartz is aggressively investigating the difference in test results and the potential source of the problem.

Although Hartz has not received any reports of animals or humans becoming ill as a result of coming into contact with this product, Hartz is taking immediate steps to remove the product from all retail stores and distribution centers. Dog owners who purchased this product should check the lot code on their bag, and, if the code is not visible, or if the bag has lot code JC23282 imprinted thereon, they should immediately discontinue use of the product and discard it in a proper manner.

Consumers can contact Hartz at 1-800-275-1414 with any questions they may have and to obtain reimbursement for purchased product.

http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/hartz10_08.html

Montana's "virtual coffee house"

This is the place to get to know your fellow community members! My elderly owners recently died and I need a new, secure, loving home without children. I'm an indoor kitty only and a special need kitty, loving but shy and wary until I learn to trust you. I need patient, loving care. Six years ago I was feral but I adjusted. Please adopt me before I "re-feral" or my future is scary. I'm clean, love to be petted and brushed, will sit next to you but an not a lap cat...and I have BEAUTIFUL blue eyes and a soft, gorgeous coat. I need a quiet, predictable environment to feel safe. Please e-mail member name meemee if you can offer rescue or a home. Thanks!!

Working together for Montana animals : Looking to Rehome One-Eyed German Shepherd Mix

-Old Topic Please Delete-

Working together for Montana animals : PLEASE HELP, DONATIONS NEEDED FOR A LOW KILL SHELTER

CROSS-POSTED: Please contact kimthompson@ buttehumane.org (@buttehumane.org). Please do not hit reply--I (cross-poster) am all the way across the country and DO NOT KNOW MORE THAN THIS.

PLEASE X POST!!

The Butte Humane Society is a low kill shelter that does NOT ever
euthanize for space. We have been taking dozens of dogs in from high
kill
shelters lately and adopting them out here. Since February alone we
have
pulled 153 animals out of high kill facilities and saved their lives.
It
is our mission to save as many animals as possible. Of course, we put
way
more money into the dogs then we get out. Lately we have been spending
more then usual on vet bills, and this month alone we have spent over
$2600. This is not including routine things like spay/neuter and
vaccinations. Our adoption part of the shelter is run only through
donations. We really want to continue to help out dogs from other
shelters, but we will not be able to afford this if we don’t get some
donations. Please, any amount helps. Here are just a few stories from
this
month that have cost us a lot of money. And attached are a few dogs
that
have been helped by our medical fund.

TO DONATE, GO TO THIS LINK: https://www.buttehumane.org/donations.php
OR MAIL A CHECK TO:
BUTTE HUMANE SOCIETY
MEDICAL FUND
2579 FAIR ST
CHICO CA 95928

Chopper is a beautiful 5 year old pit/lab that was rescued from a
shelter
that was selling dogs to blood banks. This shelter also has to
euthanize
heavily for space, and a black pit/lab would have no chance at
adoption.
Unfortunately Chopper is heartworm positive, and he now has a vet bill
around $300-

Ike and Decker came to us from another shelter were they were having
trouble placing them, so we took them in. Both boys are just SOO sweet
I
cannot even explain, but both have heartworm, and their treatment cost
us
$560

Duke, a lovely German shepherd came in with severe kennel cough which
turned into pneumonia. He was hospitalized and we almost lost him, but
thankfully he pulled through. His vet bill ended up being $518

PICS: Hope, had her eye removed after being shot with a BB (pic is
before
surgery)She is now awaiting adoption

Charles, was attacked by another dog and needed numerous stitches. Now
he
is 100% better and awaiting adoption

Jasper, a senior had to get screened for diabetes and kidney or liver
problems. He is still awaiting adoption
