Celebrating the animals in our lives

The first annual Mississippi Week for the Animals will kick off on Saturday November 7, 2009. During this week of celebration of Mississippi’s loving animals there will be lots of fun and educational animal–oriented events for both children and adults taking place across the State. This is a unique opportunity to bring together animal advocates, shelters, rescue organizations, animal health care workers, educators, students, businesses, artists, musicians, community leaders and caring citizens for the purpose saving lives and transforming communities.

Click here to see the events that are already scheduled for this special week. Events and activities will be added to the website right up to the beginning of the week of celebration so you will want to check back often to see what has been added.

Throughout the week, shelters, rescue groups, and humane organizations across the State will be hosting special events including adoption fairs, spay/neuter awareness events, health clinics (offering free or low cost spay/neuter, microchipping and vaccinations) shelter clean-up days, special seminars, storytelling events and book signings and displays in public libraries, walks for the animals and blessings for the animals. Operation Mississippi Horses will sponsor a 2-day event on November 6-7 at the Canton Multipurpose and Equine Center which will feature an adoption program, training clinics, pony rides and educational events. There is also a training event sponsored by the Gulf Coast Search and Rescue Team for search and rescue dogs scheduled for November 14 at the County Farm Arena in Harrison County.

Event planners are asking Mississippi animal lovers to participate in one or more event or to plan their own special event and make a difference in the lives of animals during this special week. Click here to see how you can become involved.

Mississippi Week for the Animals is presented by Animal World USA, an organization that was established in 2003 and is dedicated to the welfare of animals. Animal World USA developed the State Weeks Campaign in 2005 in an effort to bring communities together on behalf of the animals.
