I'm so happy you want to volunteer for the animals. I'm not sure where you are located in Michigan, but I have a few suggestions.

I think the easiest way to start is by finding a group that matches your interests and beliefs and volunteering with them.

I know you can find a listing of rescues and shelters on petfinder.com by choosing "Animal Shelters" and then sorting by state or distance. I'm sure you can find it on the Best Friends website too, I just haven't had the chance to look around the new site too much, so I couldn't tell you where the info is located.

If you live anywhere near Novi, the Michigan Pet Expo is going on this weekend and there will be lots of rescues that will be there who you could talk to in person http://www.petmichigan.com/

If you live in Southeast Michigan, my group, Basil's Buddies, just obtained its 501(c)3 status. At the present time, our focus is helping keep pets with their people by providing resources. We are in the process of setting up a food bank. We will need volunteers very soon! I also know many of the different rescues in the SE Michigan area, so if you email me privately, I can offer you suggestions to help you decide which group best suits your needs.

I've been wanting to volunteer and help animals (specifically dogs/cats) but I have no idea where to start! Im looking into volunteering at the local animal shelter at the moment but it saddens me with the euthinizations..I would want to bring everyone home! But I feel it would be good for my children to help in some small way also. Im also interested in rescue. I myself have rescued and found homes for dogs and cats.

Im just not sure where is the best place to start since I want to do it all! Please help with any suggestions or info..Thnx!!

Pet Photos With Santa!

Pets in Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio – naughty and nice – will have the chance to visit Santa this holiday season! Humane Ohio’s “Pet Photos with Santa” fundraiser will take place on Saturday, December 5^th from 10 am – 2 pm at Pet Supplies “Plus” Central Ave. (6923 W. Central, Toledo OH 43617) and on Sunday, December 6^th from 10 am – 5 pm at Pet Supplies “Plus” Alexis (849 W. Alexis, Toledo OH 43612). Freeze Frame Photos is donating their time to take the photos and Kohne Camera & Photo is donating the printing, allowing 100% of the proceeds to benefit Humane Ohio!

There are different photo packages to choose from:

$10 – two 5”x7”s and eight wallets

$20 – same as $10 package plus an additional eight wallets OR an 8”x10”

$25 – 24 cards and envelopes

Children and families photos are welcome too (with or without a pet). Photos will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. No appointments.

Proceeds will benefit Humane Ohio’s low-cost spay/neuter clinic which fixes 14,000 animals a year (the organization serves seven counties in Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio)! Humane Ohio can offer low-cost spay/neuter prices to pet owners because, as a 501c3 non-profit organization, it receives private donations and grants – and holds fundraisers like “Pet Photos with Santa” – that help subsidize the true, higher cost of spay/neuter procedures and keep prices low for clients.

Humane Ohio also has a “wish list” available at www.humaneohio.org for anyone who wants to collect items and supplies for the organization this holiday season. People and organizations are also encouraged to hold pet food drives to benefit the Humane Ohio Pet Food Bank, or to bring pet food donations when they come for Santa photos. The pet food bank is a partnership between Humane Ohio, Feed Your Neighbor Ministry (a program of the Toledo Area Ministries), Pet Supplies “Plus” and Petco to make pet food available to pet parents in need.

Humane Ohio operates a low-cost spay/neuter clinic to serve pet owners, stray/feral cat caretakers, animal shelters and rescue groups. Humane Ohio believes that all animals should receive the highest quality veterinary care possible. Their clinic uses state of the art instruments and equipment, all spay/neuter surgeries are performed by qualified, licensed vets (DVMs) and every patient receives a brief physical exam and quality pain medication. Humane Ohio spays/neuters at least 14,000 animals a year and runs the Humane Ohio Pet Food Bank in partnership with Feed Your Neighbor Ministry, a program of the Toledo Area Ministries.

Have you looked into other rescues in your state?

www.muttcats.com has a directory of rescues for all 50 states.

See how many are in Michigan.

Also is there a school of veterinary medicine, or a college with such courses nearby which might wish to assist in helping out medically as well as any of the vets in your area?

Perhaps your vet may know of someone or some services?

URGENT!! Dog hit by car needs help!!

Truman is a 3 year old pitbull/lab mix sitting in an animal control facility. He was hit by a car about 10 days ago and after being taken to the vet for initial treatment, was diagnosed with Brachial Plexus Avulsion. He can only use 3 of his 4 legs and may need to have the unusable leg amputated. The animal control has done all they can as they lack funds, time and man power to help this poor sweet boy. He is very friendly towards people and handled his treatment at the vet well. If anyone can help this guy, please let me know ASAP. He is facing euthanasia if no one can step up to help him!

Try googling for some or ask other local rescues.

Craigs list gets a lot of readers and there is an animal area.

Female Pit Bull Needs a New Home

Our red red-nose female Pit Bull is in need of a new home. She is the alpha female and has started to show animal aggression to other dogs that show dominance. I say this because she had 2 incidents of animal aggression only, they have been isolated and she has not caused any life threatening harm. However, we are renters and our land lords are forcing us to find her a new home.

Our land lord is not a fan of pit bulls and thus is trying to have her destroyed because of an incident with their dog coming onto our property. They have a shop at the back of our property and bring their dog to work every day. We have lived here for 3 years with no incident. Last week, their dog was out with no leash and no supervision in an unfenced area. She came up to our fence line where our dog Raina was out. The other dog started baring teeth at Raina and was showing aggression towards Raina. Raina jumped the fence and the other dog bit Raina, and it caused a fight. Because their dog was the one that got hurt, even though their dog started this issue, it is our dog that is being punished just because of her breed.

We have 2 small children, 2 other bully breed dogs, and 2 cats. Raina, our female pit bull, is great with the kids, snuggles with the cats, but shows some aggression towards the other dogs who are biding for dominance.

I am giving all of this information, while I know it makes Raina sound not the greatest, because I want people to be informed of the behavior issue. She is not a dangerous dog, but I believe she needs to be in a home with no other dogs, or with someone that has more training time than we do. I do not want to see her destroyed, my family is very heart broken over this situation.

She is an indoor dog, sleeps with us, and is 5 years old. If anyone out there may know of a sanctuary or bully breed friendly environment that could save her life, I would be greatful for any insight. So far every where we have checked is telling us that they are full right now and cannot take her.

Looking for "Best Friends" in Northern Michigan

I'm wondering if any MI "fans" out there live in Northern Michigan. I feel pretty isolated, with all the major events seeming to happen in Utah or California, or even in the Detroit area. I plan to work for the Santa Pics at the Grand Traverse Mall over the holidays. Anyone in this area who cares to communicate, I welcome you.

Looking for home for beautiful FeLV positive kitten

3-1/2 months old, buff tabby, vaccinated, neutered, tested twice and confirmed FeLV positive. I love this kitten ... I found him as a stray and have nursed him to health. He is beautiful and the friendliness kitten I've ever known. He loves my dogs (his only furry playmates). I can't keep him because I have three negative cats. Please help me find a home for this special kitten.

Oh that's great! I'll miss you this trip, but will definitely look you up in May.

I only get back to Lansing to plant relatives at Deepdale, if you get my drift. I left Lansing in 1974 and never looked back. Most of my graduating class did the same. It was a wonderful place to grow up, but not sure I'd want to live there as an adult. I was back two years ago and was aghast that Oldsmobile was a big hole in the ground. I do miss the summers there and would love to have a summer home in Traverse city, but will probably stay in the tropics. And of course I'll always be a Spartan!

Congratulations on your job. What will you be doing at Best Friends? I'm so excited for you. I'll be out there in a little over a week for my semi-annual visit.

I just discovered you are from Lansing. That's where I grew up. Small world. I escaped right after college and moved to Florida.
