I have been made aware of 2 young lab x brothers who came into a local shelter as strays. I am told by someone who works very closely with them that they are very sweet and smart dogs, but they had an incident with someone who was interested in adopting them and nipped at him.

They are facing an evaluation this week, and if they do not pass with flying colors they will be killed this week or next. They have been diagnosed with heartworm, for which they are not currently being treated with. If we are able to find them a foster home, Pack Life might be able to help with some of the cost of their treatment.

I have more infomormation if you or someone you know might be able to help. I would really like to keep these 2 guys together as they are inseperable, but if it means their life, we might consider splitting them up.

PLEASE let me know ASAP if there is ANYTHING you can do to save these 2 boys from death. Please don't hesitate to shoot me an email if you think you might have SOMETHING to offer! I will gladly forward any information I have to you to help these boys live.

Thank you so much in advance!

Scooter is a handsome young lab/pitbull mix who is a glass-half-full, energetic young guy with good instincts but little training. He likes people, and has a “Hiya, how YOU doin’?” attitude towards all. Scooter isn’t at all possessive of his favorite things, and will give them up readily. He is seeking an active family who will take him jogging, play ball with him in the yard, and teach him all kinds of fun tricks along with basic manners. Adopters will receive a discounted rate at our training classes, a great way to build a bond quickly and get off to a great start as life companions.

If he sounds like the guy for you, stop by the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook for an introduction today. If you have questions, please call (207) 854-9771.

Suggestions for placing FeLv cat?

Does anyone out there have any suggestions for placing a FeLv cat? We've recently taken in a foster that tested positive for FeLv. He's sweet and healthy and ready for a good home placement, but given the general misconceptions about FeLv cats, we know that finding a home will be a challenge. Any special shelters or rescues that take in FeLv cats? He's kept separate from 2 other non-FeLv fosters, and is a social guy who doesn't enjoy his isolation!

Tyson gets along fabulously with her three male dogs and a female puppy. Check out the great photos of Tyson running around with his new pals and having a ball! Tyson has done pretty well with his foster mom’s cats and was able to ignore the slow moving felines completely, although he did enjoy a friendly game of “chase” with one of the spunkier family cats. We think Tyson could live with a dog-savvy cat and would enjoy sharing his home with another dog. Extra smart, eager to please, and the ultimate cuddler, Tyson deserves a loving family that will allow him to be the super star we know he can be!

Are you looking for a jogging companion? Then Tyson may be your guy. Tyson is an American Bulldog. This breed is a member of the mastiff family, and they were created to be athletic guard dogs and working hunters of large game. An American Bulldog’s job description is protection of its property and family with fearless determination. They can and will think for themselves, are obstinate and dominant, and want to be the boss in any situation. While Tyson takes his job seriously, he also has a very sweet, loving side with his special people. At two-and-a-half years old he is now fully an adult, and is seeking new owners who have experience with this or similar breeds. Tyson has successfully completed Basic Manners training and knows many commands. After some bonding time with his new owners, Tyson would excel in the shelter’s Advanced Manners class and has all the makings of a AKC Canine Good Citizen. He responds well to confident leadership and positive reinforcement. Tyson’s new home must be one with kids over 12 years of age and a securely fenced yard. He’s been known to chase neighborhood cats and gets along well with some female dogs. He needs a grain-free diet due to allergies. Tyson is an impressive and temperamentally appropriate representative of his breed. If American Bulldogs are your breed, and you have experience, come in for an introduction in our play yard.

Please contact the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland at (207) 854-9771 to make a date you can meet Tyson in person or if you would like more information. Don't let this special guy pass you by.

He has been with 11th Hour Rescue for over 2 years. He is currently at our shelter, but is occasionally fostered by a volunteer with 6 other dogs. If you want a buddy for your dogs, Smokey’s the best! You can see a video of Smokey at: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11162966

Smokey LOVES other dogs (he knows to be gentle with smaller ones) and is great with his foster parents, however he has “guarding issues”. Trying to “protect” his home and owners has lead to biting. He has NEVER gone after his fosterers and trusts them 100%. His caregiver can take food away from him; check his teeth, paws, mouth; give him a bath…pretty much handle him however they want. He is also crate-trained and housebroken.

Smokey is a “big puppy” who lives to play with and meet new dogs. Yard time is fun time for Smokey! His wariness about trusting people stems from low self-esteem and past abandonment. He does not show outwardly aggressive body language when nervous, which means that he would require a dog savvy home. Once Smokey bonds with you, he would never go after you – and he bonds quickly. His forever family would increase his confidence and trust as a “nervous aggression” dog. Someone who knows when company visits, he must be crated or put in another room to avoid the “guarding” behavior.

He is a great dog that deserves a chance at having a loving home, because he has so much love and loyalty to give to you!

Smokey is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccinations.

Please contact his fosterer tammy.probst.smith@gmail.com for more info.

RE: Another Great Place for Pet Transport Needs: Catster & Dogster

Could you put me in touch with someone who can tell me how to get transportation via the "railroad" for a dog I just rescued from Fort Campbell Animal Shelter here in TN. Pet owners should dispose of product in a safe manner (example, a securely covered trash receptacle) and return the empty bag to the store where purchased for a full refund.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Hartz is fully cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration in this voluntary recall.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs, and, if there is cross-contamination caused by handling of the rawhide chips, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The product involved is 4,850 - 2 pound plastic bags of Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips, lot code JC23282, UPC number 3270096463 which were distributed to a national retail customer. While the normal testing that Hartz conducts through an independent outside laboratory did not detect the presence of Salmonella in any Hartz rawhide products, sample testing conducted by another laboratory did indicate the presence of the bacteria in a sample bag of the Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips. Hartz is aggressively investigating the difference in test results and the potential source of the problem.

Although Hartz has not received any reports of animals or humans becoming ill as a result of coming into contact with this product, Hartz is taking immediate steps to remove the product from all retail stores and distribution centers. Dog owners who purchased this product should check the lot code on their bag, and, if the code is not visible, or if the bag has lot code JC23282 imprinted thereon, they should immediately discontinue use of the product and discard it in a proper manner.

Consumers can contact Hartz at 1-800-275-1414 with any questions they may have and to obtain reimbursement for purchased product.

http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/hartz10_08.html

Working together for Maine animals : Diva needs a family (she's been returned 6 times!!)

We are volunteers for the Bangor Humane Society and have been fostering Diva (a 45 lb husky/shepherd mix) since May of this year. What we know about her history is that she and her littermates were surrendered to the Humane Society when they were around 4 - 6 months old. They had had little human contact and no socialization. The description of Diva after she arrived was “cowering”. When we met her she was 10 months old and had been returned to the Bangor Humane Society 3 or 4 times. Her adopters meant well but became frustrated by the fact that they could not get past some behaviors. She was mostly fearful of men, growled at strangers, and would fear bark at her owners even after some adjustment time had passed. Diva has never bitten anyone and is not aggressive.

There have been two more adoptions that failed during our involvement with her. One family returned her because they soon realized that their house was too busy and that Diva played too roughly around small children (6 year olds). The next failed adoption was because she was too pushy with a family dog. Diva will not be placed in a home with small children or with cats. She does quite well with older children – our 11 and 13-year-old grandchildren are very comfortable with her. She really does well with most dogs. We send her to a daycare and she has no problems there. We think that she has done well modeling the behavior of our family dog. She is quite pushy with other dogs, but will respond appropriately when the other dog will not tolerate her behavior.

Since we have had her she has become more confident. She continues to fear bark at us in certain circumstances (coming into a room suddenly – especially after showering). We think the episodes are becoming fewer. But this is a slow process. Any interested adopter should know that this will happen and be able to deal with this behavior. Once she realizes that we are really the same people she knew before, she is a fun and loving dog. We think she has become quite social in our family. One of us has taken her jogging and she is a great partner. We also have had her in a class that combined agility and obedience. She is treat-motivated and learned the basic obedience commands easily. She was not at all reluctant to try the agility components of the class. She would be great at agility. She was initially very shy in situations where there were lots of people – this would be a time when Diva would fear bark also. She wanted to get away. We don’t have a lot of strangers or visitors, but have exposed her to situations where there were a lot of strangers and feel that she is a bit more comfortable.

Except for her quirky barking behavior, she is very much a puppy. She needs a family who will take the time to train her and will accept the fact that she may always have some of these quirks. A dog trainer we consulted reminded us that “none of us perfect.”

We are happy to answer any questions about Diva. Our goal with this posting is to reach out to a wider audience for Diva. We want her to find her forever family.

Working together for Maine animals : Molly - a 6 year old Golden/Lab Needs Help FAST

Molly is a 6 year old Golden/Yellow Lab mix who was allowed by her owners to continue with food possessive/aggressive behavior & now has managed to break the skin on a small child's hand while reaching for food he was holding. Apparently her owners had a habit of feeding her from the table & as the 1 year old was flailing about like they do with food in his hand, Molly thought he was handing it to her & caught him in two spots with her teeth. She did break the skin, but clearly could have easily caused much greater damage if she was truly trying to bit the child, but the owners are in a panic & due to this and a multitude of other issues in their lives feel they need to either give her up or put her down. I spent time with her on Sunday and she was adorable, affectionate, loving and playful. She had no issues with her toys or any of her 'stuff' allowed me to poke and prode her, mess with her feet, and act as a general bother with no aggression whatsoever, but she is definitely protective of her own food so should be in a home with no children. She likes other dogs, but wants to be alpha at least with other females. She's a great dog and it's absolutely insane to even consider destroying her for such a manageable behavior, so I am asking anyone who might be able to help to contact me.

I have two litter mates of Molly's (mine are males) & they are goofy, big, typical Lab/Golden Retriever 'types', but I work full-time and have a very small house so cannot take Molly on. She desperately needs someone who is willing to be consistent and firm with her regarding the rules and will NOT tolerate her possessive behavior and should probably go to a home with no small children because of her food issues. I hate to see this gorgeous girl put down simply because her owners allowed bad behavior for too long. They love Molly, but do not feel capable of handling re-training her even with professional help and quite honestly neither are really 'alpha' people, so I'm putting the word out there asking for anyone who might be able to help this beautiful girl. I've already emailed more than 20 trainers and vets in the area and have a few more calls to make, but time is short because I am afraid once her quarantine period is up next week her owners will put her down, so I'm desperately seeking assistance.
