I had been in the Carson Shelter since July. The guardian angeles and the wonderful people at the Carson Shelter took real good care of me. They took me to the Super Adoption Event on 11/15. I had lots of people look at me, but I did not find my forever home..

The good people at Best Friends could not let me go back to the Carson Shelter, so I am now in a great foster home in the Santa Clarita Valley. ( north Los Angeles County) I am about 10 years old and a house dog. I love other doggies and I am housebroken. They say I might be a little deaf.

He's come to stay with us and is just beginning to come out of his shell. The amazing thing is that Charla, the angel who works at West LA Shelter was able to protect this boy since July. He was completely terrified of people and still is pretty much. His saving grace is that he loves other dogs so the shelter could put other dogs in with him and he wasn't taking up additional space by needing to occupy a solo run. Still, his likelihood of adoption was next to nil, but Charla just had a feeling. Silva and I had recently lost Milo, a long time semi-feral resident, from our pack so we had room for a dog who might take a long time to come around. We don't mind however long he wants to sit in a corner looking like his head is about to come to a point as long as he is cool with the other dogs which he is. Barney is a really handsome brindle with a white chest. It's such a privilege to be able to give a home to dogs like Milo, above, and Barney.

Watching them come around and become real dogs is amazing and their gratitude, sometimes from a distance, just makes you feel wonderful. Dogs like Milo and Barney make great household companions as long as you are prepared to be patient and give them some space and time. It's best if you have a couple of dogs already that will accept a newcomer and show him the ropes. It's amazing how quickly they learn from each other. Unfortunately, most dogs like Barney don't have guardian angels like Charla and her volunteers to give them the extra help they need to make it through the shelter. We and Barney are fortunate that there are good people like Charla who are committed to the well being of shelter animals despite the pain and disappointment that comes with the job. Thanks Charla

Re: REESE IS STILL MISSING - PLEASE HELP FIND HIM (Venice, CA)

I was unable to attached flyer/picture (is there a way to do that?) - which is why I asked people to contact Kai - if I had your personal email I'd send ...

One of our dogs got away from his foster on Sunday and is still missing. Venice area – if you can help search or put up flyers, please contact Kai – info below. Reese is very sweet but shy and will likely be scared.

THANK YOU

Hello,

Reese is still missing, is there anyone at all that can help us search for him? If you can't yourself, do you know anyone that can? We need people to look under bushes/cars/ ask neighbors, he could be in someone's garage. He went missing with his leash still attached to his collar, he could be stuck somewhere! The last sighting was late Sunday night.

We also need people to help post more flyers.

PLEASE, can anyone help us find Reese?

I was wondering if any of the smaller rescues had any luck by banning together in order to find a facility or outdoor location in order to show their adoptables on either a weekly or monthly basis? This would allow a lot more to be shown as opposed to smaller amounts at Petco, which does allow this, yet in a smaller indoor fashion. I was thinking of a larger venue if possible that folks would know about and utilize for finding Forever Homes for animals needing them here on Oahu.

It is understandable there may be insurance issues, however I wonder if anyone has obtained the permission from owners of even any parking areas to set up fencing and have the adoptables shown to the public. What about your swap meets and farmers markets each week there. I ask in CA because you have year round good weather like we do here in Hawaii. Please email me directly if you could with any sugestions or stories of what worked and what did not as learning from others' experience is always a good starting point.

The prevalence of small dogs in the city and county shelters has been a growing trend over the last couple of years. Blame pet stores, back yard breeders and county puppy mills. Whatever the case, when I was on stage touting shelter dogs from LAAS with "House" star Lisa Edelstein, it was one Chi after another. There are always a few, but yesterday marked a new high or should I say low in the number of small dogs clogging the shelters.

The good news is that all but two of 65 - 70 dogs that came to the event from the 6 LA city shelters went home with new families or were placed with rescue groups. The two that still need a home are from the Harbor Shelter but the are on the networking radar of local rescue and the consensus opinion was that they will be taken care of very soon. One, a beautiful young dog named Carter, is particularly handsome. He looks like a Kirelian Bear dog - black with white on his chest. Cool dog, likes to sit in a chair. Neither of the two dogs that back to Harbor have any issues. There just wasn't enough room with the rescues to handle them yesterday and these were regarded as the ones in safest circumstances.

Props to the local rescue community who stepped forward big time to take in some of the shelter dogs that needed a chance. Karma Rescue pulled 5 purebred Bloodhounds. Very social and sweet. Also a few really adorable staffies. Nancy Heigl, Katherine's mom who runs the Heigl's Hounds of Hope rescue pulled a bunch including some older dogs that just need a some TLC. The Heigles also offered funds to other rescues that stepped forward for shelter dogs. And, of course, there was Pnina Gerston, a local legend who organizes the last minute distribution of shelter dogs to local rescue. Seven dogs, including 5 seniors are headed for Best Friends sanctuary. One, a very people shy young pit bull terrier type male will be coming to stay with Silva and me.

The next such LA Adoption Festival will be in the spring of 2010. Keep an eye/ear out for the date and location TBD.

Adoption Festival This Sunday

My favorite event, The Best Friends Pet Adoption Festival, is happening this Sunday starting at 11AM at the Tar Pits park on Wilshire 1 block east of Fairfax. This is going to be huge. Seventy-two organizations including the city and county shelters and probably over 1000 pets looking for homes. We've been producing the festival since April of 1999 and as a result literally thousands of dogs, cats, bunnies and birds have been placed in new homes.

Like any collection of animal people, this promises to be as wonderfully eccentric as any you can imagine, but with a passionately serious mission to save lives, so if you or anyone you know is looking for a new best friend, be there when the things get going at 11AM.

When we started what has become a much anticipated biannual event, there was a fair amount of skepticism about bringing the fractious animal community together for anything other than an argument, but the Chinatown principle prevailed. The Chinatown principle is this: if one Chinese restaurant opens up for business across the street from another Chinese restaurant, that's competition. But if twenty Chinese restaurants open within a few blocks of each other, that's a whole different thing. That's Chinatown and its a special attraction. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts and the same goes for the Adoption Festival. It's a great family destination that draws thousands of people who, in this this case, are not look for a great plate of mu shu, but rather a great pet and there are plenty to choose from.

I'll be there and I hope you will be too.

As a result, they are now available for rescue only, not regular adoption. (The third one--a kitten--is closely bonded to the 8-month old) Their 10-day period is up Tuesday Nov. 10. The Jason Heigl Foundation has offered $100 per cat to a rescue group that can take them. Others have offered additional donations. None are fixed. Only a rescue group can help get them out. These are young, healthy cats who have shown no aggression.

She can check the 'information and resources' section of the Los angeles and California golocals to find groups she might be interested in contacting. Best Friends posts some positions on its main site, www.bestfriends.org, but those positions may be in Kanab Utah.

Many shelters are operated by city/county entities that might sometimes post positions, too.

If she is looking for additional volunteer opportunities, there is a need for more volunteers to staff our informational tables for the Puppies Aren't products campaign in orange County--Mission Viejo and in Brea. she can go to the puppies aren't products campaign and sign up or email gregandbarb@cox.net or jkrause@bestfriends.org or kari5@mac.com to volunteer with this campaign. One of the California writers also lives in Huntington Beach. If she'd like to contact us directly, she can contact me at teamcal@cox.net for more ideas.

Thanks!
