The McKee Project has put together a manual in Spanish on how to organize low-cost spay and neuter campaigns. The pupose of this manual is to help communities solve the problem of pet overpopulation.

Help Aruba Dogs

Aruba has the problem of neglected street dogs and other animals just as many of the Caribbean islands do. They currently have a small shelter/group called Animal Rights Aruba. This group has been trying hard to care for the neglected and abused animals and they also have been trying to start up a spay/neuter program. They have run out of money and the government will not help them as they do not feel there is a problem.

We are hoping that this petition will show the government that the residents and tourists want some help with the situation by supporting the education the residents on proper animal care to stop the unnecessary suffering.

Two vets plus two assistants plus three volunteers equals more than 100 sterilized dogs and some cats in one day. This is one of McKee Project's formulas to solve the overpopulation problem of “stray” dogs in the poor neighborhoods of San Jose, Costa Rica.

Colombia: A haven from the streets

Dizzying traffic circles on the avenida just a block away and the warm sun sifts through the thick humid air. We jump in the car and make a beeline for the traffic jam. The diesel exhaust is heavy on the hot streets where horse-pulled carts compete with hundreds of little European cars for footing in the narrow lanes.

We are en route to check out a sanctuary for street dogs here in Cali that is run by sisters Stella Gomez and Jamileth Ramirez and Fundacion Vidanimal.

Primera Clinica de Castracion de perros y gatos

Merida y Comunidades Vecinas del Yucatan

Quizas no suene muy importante a la gente aqui en Canada. La mayoria de nosotros automaticamente castramos a nuestros gatos y perros a la edad apropiada.

En el Yucatan, estas son noticias extraordinarias.

Se han planeado mil operaciones de castracion de animales. Cuarenta veterinarios mas enfermeras veterinarias, voluntarios vienen de los Estados Unidos, Eslovaquia, Rumania, Mexico.

Planned Pethood Mexico, La Alcaldia de Merida, El Estado de Salud del Yucatan, Evolucion y el AFAD estan dando apoyo en forma de servicios de cirugias, logística, instrumentos quirúrgicos, medicinas y alojamiento para los voluntarios. Burger King, al igual que otros negocios locales proveeran comida y bebidas a los diferentes grupos de voluntarios.

Y todo esto tomara lugar en Enero del 2010

Que maravilloso comienzo de la nueva decada, una manifestación concreta de la compasión y el cuidado de los animales. Esto es el comienzo de una cambio tangible en la cultura y la filosofia hacia los animales. Es algo inevitable y maravilloso.

Felicidades a todos los involucrados.

He escrito, hasta el momento, dos artículos en el boletín informativo RDOC sobre la situacion de los animales en el Yucatan y el trabajo terrifico que ha logrado el AFAD. No puedo esperar la Primavera para darles mas informacion.

Merida And Neighboring Communities In The Yucatan

It may not sound like much to people here in Canada. Most of us automatically get our cats and dogs spayed or neutered at the appropriate age.

In the Yucatan, this is extraordinary news.

One thousand spay and neutering surgeries are planned. Forty vets plus vet nurses, volunteers are coming in from the USA, Slovaquia, Romania, Mexico.

Planned Pethood Mexico, Planned Pethood Plus, Merida City Hall, Yucatan’s State Health, “Evolucion” and AFAD are each providing support whether it be in the form of surgical services, logistics, surgical implements, medicine, lodging for the volunteers. Burger King as well as other local businesses will be supplying food and drinks to the different volunteer crews.

And this is all happening in January 2010

What a wonderful start to the new decade, a concrete demonstration of compassion and care for animals. This is the beginning of a tangible change in culture and philosophy towards animals. It’s unavoidable and wonderful.

Bravo to all involved.

I have written, so far, two articles in the RDOC newsletter about the situation of animals in the Yucatan and the terrific work accomplished by AFAD. I cannot wait till Spring to tell you more.
