"Rainy"
(border collie/shepherd mix) joined my home 8 years ago to support my
child, who has severe social anxiety. As a vital family member with
much to give, Rainy took an additional household role two years ago:
Mentoring hard-to-place foster dogs and puppies for a no-kill shelter.

Unfortunately, Rainy sustained knee injuries as a mentor, first to
one and now the other knee, after a foster dog (now adopted) repeatedly
challenged her for the pack leader position and fighting ensued.

Rainy needs TPLO surgery for a damaged ACL, and I’ve already
depleted savings on three surgeries this past year for her other knee
(now fully functioning). Please consider donating to help save Rainy!
Do you know ANYONE else who might take this therapy/mentoring dog's
circumstances to heart and help? Can you please help spread the word?

Rainy has been a godsend since being adopted as a skittish
6-month-old with a hernia from our local animal shelter. She wasn’t
likely to find a home, with her initial fearfulness, surgical need and
anticipated size and color (large black dog). Yet, we couldn't pass her
by! We thought we were doing a good deed; we never imagined how much
she'd give back to our family and foster animals!

Rainy has become an integral member, calming my child during
anxious moments and providing a purpose for him to go into the
community. She is a calming presence for a litter of anxious pups and
their feral mother, and that has only reinforced her importance, with
seven fostered dogs and cats have been adopted.

After repairing her first knee last year, Rainy returned to her
gentle self again, playing with the fosters and modeling appropriate
behavior. This past summer, she even helped an extremely timid foster
dog learn to welcome human touch!
Sadly Rainy is favoring her other knee this time, and she howls
as we walk the foster dogs without her to minimize further knee damage.
She clearly wants to go and has much zest for life! Yet, walking
increases inflammation and pain. She can't go on like this much longer.
Without surgery, she will become lame with painful arthritis.

Please help spare this therapy/mentoring dog from lifelong pain
versus premature euthanasia. She's trim and otherwise in good health.
She has many more years to give, if only we can pool resources to
repair her second knee! Please? She’s worth it! Please email me, or donate through her description on fundable.com ("Therapy dog needing knee surgery").

LOST family dog

We have lost our Gizmo.

He is about 7 years old, and was rescued by my sister in Dodge City , Kansas about 5 years ago. Homeless at 2 years old, he came to her with issues, but they dealt with them as best as possible. As the only dog, he got lots of attention, but never bonded well with the daughter, was never the snuggly companion they envisioned.

A couple years ago, along came Abby, a puppy that was discovered on the front porch one day. Her original home was never found, and she became a member of the family. She WAS the cuddly, happy, loving dog, and poor JC kinda became the second-class citizen. Adding insult to emotional injury, Abby grew into an enormous dog (part rottweiller?), far too rambunctious for JC.

My sister recently married a dog-loving man who brought his own even bigger dog into the mix. Poor JC! The turmoil of moving to a new home, sharing the home with more dogs and people, getting even less personal attention.

The other day, he bit the daughter. I don't know all the details, but she was attempting to make him sit, and she wound up getting bitten. Now my sister, understandably needing to be sure that her daughter (12 years old) is safe, must re-home JC. She is talking about returning him to the shelter he was rescued from.

JC doesn't need to go to a shelter where his chances of being euthanized would be great. He is a loving, sweet dog who loves going for car rides, walks, and getting petted. He is in good health and has been neutered. He doesn't like many men, having lived in a house of females most of his life. He is not normally aggressive, but gets nervous in new situations or when he thinks he is being threatened.

He needs a home where he would be the only dog, perhaps a single woman who would dote on him.

Can you help find a rescue group or a home for him?

He has been with 11th Hour Rescue for over 2 years. He is currently at our shelter, but is occasionally fostered by a volunteer with 6 other dogs. If you want a buddy for your dogs, Smokey’s the best! You can see a video of Smokey at: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11162966

Smokey LOVES other dogs (he knows to be gentle with smaller ones) and is great with his foster parents, however he has “guarding issues”. Trying to “protect” his home and owners has lead to biting. He has NEVER gone after his fosterers and trusts them 100%. His caregiver can take food away from him; check his teeth, paws, mouth; give him a bath…pretty much handle him however they want. He is also crate-trained and housebroken.

Smokey is a “big puppy” who lives to play with and meet new dogs. Yard time is fun time for Smokey! His wariness about trusting people stems from low self-esteem and past abandonment. He does not show outwardly aggressive body language when nervous, which means that he would require a dog savvy home. Once Smokey bonds with you, he would never go after you – and he bonds quickly. His forever family would increase his confidence and trust as a “nervous aggression” dog. Someone who knows when company visits, he must be crated or put in another room to avoid the “guarding” behavior.

He is a great dog that deserves a chance at having a loving home, because he has so much love and loyalty to give to you!

Smokey is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccinations.

Please contact his fosterer tammy.probst.smith@gmail.com for more info.

Working together for Kansas animals : Pug - 3 Year Old Female Fawn Needs Home

A local Wichita Pug Rescue group has rescued a beautiful 3 year old fawn pug that was going to be euthanized due to the dogs behavior of aggression. The owners of the dog abused/teased the dog into a state of aggression for over three years. While our group has been fostering this pug and attempting to retrain the pug, we are needing someone who is more experience at behavioral training than our foster parent who is currently searching for a sanctuary to take on this 3 year old pug in lieu of being euthanized. If you happen to know of anyone who could help, please email me at crgoodell@cox.net.

Working together for Kansas animals : NEEDING INFORMATION PLEASE

Hi, I live in Colorado and have been protesting a pet store in Denver. Seeking a spot for a little beagle with psycho-somatic seizure disorder

Our rescue group saved a little 20 lb. beagle mix that we believe has psycho-somatic seizure disorder. He has the seizures while he is sleeping which wakes him and causes him to attack. He had some dog on dog fear aggression and a trainer was able to work with that. But no triggers for this aggression have been found other than he will be growling in his sleep and wake abruptly and attack. He had one few days ago and attacked and bit the woman who had adopted him so he's been returned. We are over full in our foster homes and none of them are equipped to work with him. He is an incredibly sweet little guy and is pretty perfect except for these seizures that he seems to have every couple of weeks. It's our understanding that there is seizure medication he could take to help or that there are possibly holistic options but unless we can find a place for him to go where someone can work with him, he will be euthanized next Friday, 2/13.
Precious Purrs & Paws Sanctuary said that they currently have a resident Beagle just like this and he is on Phenobarbital 2 x's a day. She said the med's are "human" prescription, but have nearly stopped the seizures all together. The med's are only about $10.00 a month.

The Best Friends Sanctuary in Utah is of course full but said "From our experience, conditions such as Shiloah’s may take some time to regulate on medicine but are very manageable. I don’t know Shiloah’s details, but for more information on seizure disorders go to: h?t?t?p?:?/?/?w?w?w?.?v?e?t?e?r?i?n?a?r?y?p?a?r?t?n?e?r?.?c?o?m?/?C?o?n?t?e?n?t?.?p?l?x???P?=?A?&?a?m?p?;?A?=?5?6?0?&?a?m?p?;?S?=?1?&?a?m?p?;?S?o?u?r?c?e?I?D?=?4?2?&?q?u?o?t? ; and they suggested to post here in case someone can help.

I would be willing to make a donation to help with any medical expenses he might have. FDA does not endorse either the product or the company.

The Hartz Mountain Corporation Voluntarily Recalls One Specific Lot of Nationwide Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips Because of Possible Health Risk
Contact:
John Mullane
(914) 712 9150

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- October 20, 2008 -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation, Secaucus, NJ is voluntarily recalling one specific lot of Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot are potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Hartz is fully cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration in this voluntary recall.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs, and, if there is cross-contamination caused by handling of the rawhide chips, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The product involved is 4,850 - 2 pound plastic bags of Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips, lot code JC23282, UPC number 3270096463 which were distributed to a national retail customer. While the normal testing that Hartz conducts through an independent outside laboratory did not detect the presence of Salmonella in any Hartz rawhide products, sample testing conducted by another laboratory did indicate the presence of the bacteria in a sample bag of the Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips. Hartz is aggressively investigating the difference in test results and the potential source of the problem.

Although Hartz has not received any reports of animals or humans becoming ill as a result of coming into contact with this product, Hartz is taking immediate steps to remove the product from all retail stores and distribution centers. Dog owners who purchased this product should check the lot code on their bag, and, if the code is not visible, or if the bag has lot code JC23282 imprinted thereon, they should immediately discontinue use of the product and discard it in a proper manner.

Consumers can contact Hartz at 1-800-275-1414 with any questions they may have and to obtain reimbursement for purchased product.

http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/hartz10_08.html
