She had not been adopted, and is too nice of a dog not to be rescued. I already have four dogs of my own, so I cannot keep her forever. I have rescued her with the intention of adopting her out to a loving forever home. She is the friendliest, most affectionate dog I have ever met, and you can see by looking into her eyes that she longs for a human to call her own. She needs continued training with obedience and walking on a leash. She is very intelligent and eager to please, so she learns quickly. She knows several commands, but gets very excited when she sees people, so she sometimes needs some reminders after the initial command. She is approximately two years old, requires lots of exercise and loves to snuggle. If you are looking for a devoted companion dog, there is none that will be more devoted than Shandi. She lives with me and my dogs in Iowa. She is spayed and up-to-date with vaccinations and in good health. I would like for her to be the only dog in her new home. If you would like to meet her or learn more about her, please email me. bdeann@aol.com

Working together for Iowa animals : Dog-Friendly Chow Mix Seeks Forever Home – Please Cross-Post!

Smokey is an active and healthy 6-years-young Chow/Shepherd/Rotti mix. He has been with 11th Hour Rescue for over 2 years. He is currently at our shelter, but is occasionally fostered by a volunteer with 6 other dogs. If you want a buddy for your dogs, Smokey’s the best! You can see a video of Smokey at: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11162966

Smokey LOVES other dogs (he knows to be gentle with smaller ones) and is great with his foster parents, however he has “guarding issues”. Trying to “protect” his home and owners has lead to biting. He has NEVER gone after his fosterers and trusts them 100%. His caregiver can take food away from him; check his teeth, paws, mouth; give him a bath…pretty much handle him however they want. He is also crate-trained and housebroken.

Smokey is a “big puppy” who lives to play with and meet new dogs. Yard time is fun time for Smokey! His wariness about trusting people stems from low self-esteem and past abandonment. He does not show outwardly aggressive body language when nervous, which means that he would require a dog savvy home. Once Smokey bonds with you, he would never go after you – and he bonds quickly. His forever family would increase his confidence and trust as a “nervous aggression” dog. Someone who knows when company visits, he must be crated or put in another room to avoid the “guarding” behavior.

He is a great dog that deserves a chance at having a loving home, because he has so much love and loyalty to give to you!

Smokey is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccinations.

Please contact his fosterer tammy.probst.smith@gmail.com for more info.

Working together for Iowa animals : Rescued

Deleted

Working together for Iowa animals : Rescued

***Cheetah was rescued!!!***

Working together for Iowa animals : 3 pits in need of immediate rescue In Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Hi,

I am a rescue volunteer at the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter in Iowa. We have 3 extremely urgent dogs in our shelter who have been residents for many weeks. These are issue free dogs. Our shelter has suffered a devastating flood in June of 2008. We lost our entire facility but managed to rescue all animals safely, including a parakeet by boat!

The 3 fantastic "kids" have until the end of the week and we are desperate. We will transport, donate food, pay for all vetting, donate for their continued care. We believe in these dogs or we would not request your help with them. Our adoption pool has been decimated by the epic flood. Add the economy on top of it and we are struggling to get our animals into areas where there are adopters. Our temporary shelter is much smaller and lacks over 20 kennels in comparison to the other facility. Can you help us?

Chrome:Extremely urgent

Beautiful little female around a year old. Very well mannered and easy going. Loves everyone and does great with other dogs. No fence fighting...she is a lady. She is a complete Buddy dog.

Goofy: Extremely urgent

This guy is regal and animated at the same time. He is all boy and full of energy. Such a good, fun guy. He needs some manners on a leash and our volunteers have been working with him. We have no outdoor exercise area which is just so hard on these dogs. Even with a lot of confinement, Goofy has settled into the shelter life quite well. He is adaptable, adoptable and resiliant.

Buffy: Extremely urgent

Let's put this in perspective, Buffy a week ago road on top of one of our animal control trucks in a St. Patricks day parade in downtown Cedar Rapids with one of the fun-loving animal control officers! She loved every minute of it. This young girl has been to Petsmart for adoption days. She is a great gal and such a sweetheart.

We are in a race for their lives. Our limited shelter is full and these 3 have been there the longest. Our shelter director has given us until the end of this week (March 23rd). If we can get a commitment on their behalf, we might be able to buy them a bit of extra time or board them until we can coordinate.
If you can not help, we appreciate your thoughts and request your assistance in helping us locate a rescue, shelter or foster.

Thank you so much.
Jan Erceg
rescue volunteer
Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter
319-350-8295
oskie1@aol.com
Beautiful little female around a year old. They say they get their puppies from Northwest Kennels in Iowa. I have never seen this kennel, but I can't imagine it is anything better than a puppy mill. I am going to try and do some research on this place, and I am wondering if anyone can help me. I want to at least shut down the pet ranch in the mall, but I will need to have some hard evidence to do so. Does anyone want to team up with me?

Working together for Iowa animals : abandoned on the interstate needs foster or forever home.

Hello all,
I recently was traveling home this Sunday and saw a dog in the ditch on the interstate, outside of Chamberlain, South Dakota she was more then ready to be rescued, had no collar, or microchip and I have checked the lost dog postings in the area and even neighboring states with no luck. It appears she has been dumped. She is currently being seperated from my dogs as it appears she may not get along well with other dogs, I am going to try and work with her, I do believe this could be changed with some behavioral help from an expert, but if not done I would suggest she is the only dog in the home. She is a young dog anywhere from 6 months to about 12 months, we took her to the vet yesterday and she is clean, got a dewormer but doesn't appear to have any parasites, she also got her rabies and first distemper shot, & will need another one in 3 weeks but will be up to date on shots after that. It is also possible that she might be spayed the vet wasnt sure she will have to be watched to see if she goes into heat or not. Although she seems more uncertain around animals and dogs she is excellent otherwise and is the biggest lovebug and snuggling lap dog you can find. Not food aggressive. She is the sweetest dog you can find. I can pretty much meet anyone interested in meeting/adopting her in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa and find a place to meet up. I would be keeping her myself but I really can't and have grown very attached to her so want the best home possible. I would also be willing to do a trial home for her. If you are interested or know of someone who is please email me and tell me about yourself at skateboarder_chic04@hotmail.com or you can email me on best friends account.
Thanks!
Olivia

Working together for Iowa animals : Special needs dog in Cedar Rapids Iowa needing a family to love.

I am a rescue volunteer with the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Our shelter was flooded on June 13th 2008. We lost our shelter and everything in it but we rescued approx. 132 animals by boat, including a parakeet. It was a monumental effort by a community facing certain ruin.

Months later we are in a temporary shelter with many fewer kennels for our dogs. We hope in the next few years to build a facility we can be proud of in it's accommodation of our animals. Until then, we make do as best we can.

We have a wonderful dog named Lefty. He came by that name honestly, when our animal control officer found him chained in an apartment, left by uncaring owners. I call them that because we all know "owners" of an animal see themselves as just that, and the animal as nothing more than property. Lefty was skin and bones with no food or water. Know one knows how long he had been there. You folks have heard this story a million times or more and sadly, so have we.

Lefty has never been adopted through our shelter. He is in temporary foster care and we have now been dealt another sad truth. Lefty has been found to have chronic kidney failure. He has significant time left-perhaps 2-4 years, maybe longer, who knows. He is on medication and Science Diet K/d to help slow the process. The vet believes he had come in contact with something that caused damage to his kidneys. They are normal in shape and appearance according to a recent ultrasound.

Lefty is approx. 18 months old and about 60lbs. He is a lab mixed with who knows what and has a spirit and resilience that we just can't let go. He needs our help and we need yours. We don't know if it is Lefty's rough go in life, his joy of having the luxury to leave his horrible circumstance and just enjoy the moments of life. I think dogs have the commodity on perspective, much more than we think. We are the ones left struggling for hope. Any help you can give us and Lefty will be very much appreciated. He needs a family to love him unconditionally.

Working together for Iowa animals : Smiley will DIE in a couple days if someone won't help him!!!!

THis is very URGENT-Smiley is slated to die w/in the next few days if someone doesn't offer to take him in!!! PLEASE HELP~ Please read my letter to Best Friends. Though they were unable to take in Smiley, I'm PRAYING someone out there can take him in!!!! Please contact me IMMEDIATELY!!!
Hello Best Friends Animal Society,

I'm writing to you with the utmost urgency about a rescue dog! Smiley (a.k.a Buddy) is a beautiful, wonderful dog and is desperate for help as he is slated to die by euthanization.

Let me give a real quick rundown of my organization. We are the Animal Welfare Foundation of Iowa (www.wesavepets.org). We are based out of Jones County in Iowa. Jones County does not have an animal shelter so our organization takes in all the strays of the county and vets them and alters them and places them into loving foster homes. Without us, the dogs are held for 7 days than would be euthanized. So far, in our 6 year history, we have never let them put down a dog! Recently, the number of incoming dogs have overwhelmed us and it's getting harder and harder to keep up with them and harder and harder to find them a foster home.
Also in our 6 year history, we have only had to put down 2 dogs that had "aggression" issues and that was because after they had their issues or instances, there wasn't a foster home that would take them!

This brings me to Smiley/Buddy. Smiley came to us in late August. I personally picked Smiley up from the clinic at the end of his 7 day hold time and took him home. He was a ideal doggie-rode great in the car, was quiet, got along with all 12 dogs at my house, barely ever made a peep and once he learned he could hang outside and come and go as he pleased, he was in heaven. I had Smiley for a few days while we searched for another foster home for him.

So, Smiley moved on to another foster home. This foster home had 2 adults, 3 dogs and a cat (all of which he got along with) in the house. Smiley had a issue of pestering/humping their most passive dog and we had a trainer go to the house and gave them some pointers that really helped with Smiley. Smiley was "training" with the woman of the house as she was training for a marathon and got up to running 22 miles a day and loved it! Smiley is high energy but was a great dog for them and was such an angel laying at their feet chewing a bone. The pestering/humping was the only issue the foster family ever told us about. But a couple weeks ago, they contacted us to tell us they did not want to foster Smiley anymore and he needed to go. We had them take him to a vet clinic while we looked for somewhere to move him to.

He has been boarded at the vet clinic for 2 weeks.

Well, at the vet clinic, Smiley has shown some other issues. While Smiley is so great and loves the vet techs that have earned his trust, he appears to be aggressive to some point when you don't have his trust. I went to the clinic to visit him when he first arrived (as I had him at my house when he first arrived w/ us) and when i went to introduce myself by letting him sniff my hand-he would have bitten me if the fence had not been there. He just seems so unsure of himself and is building a wall around himself by scaring people off. Smiley is very, very smart and I think he knows what he's doing. He sits on point and takes treats like a champ and with the girls he knows, he is an awesome dog!!

This brings me to the point of urgency. We can no longer afford to board Smiley at the vet clinic and noone has come forward to want to foster him and work with him. So being the animal lover I am, I went to the clinic today with the intent of bringing him home with me (even though I have 11 dogs there now). He again, acted scared/aggressive in the kennel so we brought him out to the run. He showed the same behavior outside (barking at me and wanting to bite me) and it was clear that I could not take him home as he would need more work than I could offer him. I think it's so important to point out that while he was acting this way with me, he was loving and begging the vet tech to pet him and smooch him!!

After crying for the past 3 hours and knowing that we don't have the resources to place him in to get him trained and adoptable, I decided to try your organization. I know you probably get 100's of requests a day, but I wanted to reach out to you and pray my little heart out that you could take him in and give him the chance to live that he sooooooo very much deserves!!!! I'm just beyond heartbroken that this dog is going to die because we don't have the resources to help him!!!

Here is his Petfinder link, so you can see that he is a one of a kind, beautiful dog with a really great soul that deserves not to die:

http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11767109

If you could get back to me as soon as you possibly could-that would be amazing. I really think Buddy has only a day or two. I think the decision will be made today that we have to have him euthanized, but I'm going to beg for a couple more days to give him the chance of Best Friends maybe saving him.

Thank you so very much!!!!!!!!!

Melissa Aalfs
AWF Vice President
mlaalfs@netzero.com
319-415-1270
www.wesavepets.org

RE: RE: RE: I bought this dog

How can you tell that it has a microchip?it should be under the skin and not be able to be felt.if you can feel it,it is not inserted properly and needs to be looked at and possibly removed and a new chip inserted by a vet or at your local shelter.

I can feel the microchips on two of our four cats, but maybe it's different with cats? I asked the vet and he said it's not unusual to be able to feel the chip. They've had them for nearly 10 years and they're fine. Maybe because I'm a massage therapist and tuned into palpating folks all day?
