They pulled over to see if it was a stray animal when the badly mangled dog walked right up to them, wagging his tail. They were easily able to get the dog into their car and then rushed to the Humane Society of Indianapolis (HSI) at Michigan Road and 79th Street.

The experienced staff at HSI recognized that the dog had been in a serious fight with another dog and immediately began to clean and flush his wounds. The caring citizens decided upon the name, Valor.

During the triage examination, more than 50 recent puncture wounds were counted. A large number more were evident but in various stages of healing – some days old, some weeks old and still others were months old. HSI staff soon realized that Valor had extensive injuries to both of his forelegs and was losing large amounts of blood from a gaping wound in his chest.

They sedated Valor and began taking radio graphs to determine the depth of the injuries to his forelegs. One foreleg was so seriously fractured that it would require amputation.

Unfortunately, the other foreleg had a long-healed (never treated) and serious fracture, which prohibited Valor from being able to bear weight on either of his forelegs.

Due to these horrific and unfortunate findings, Valor was humanely euthanized while under anesthetic.

Valor’s scars covered his ears, face, muzzle, head, legs, shoulders and chest. Of the most recent wounds, the most significant and severe were on his head and chest. One serious wound on his muzzle went practically right through the thick lip.

Given the apparent history of similar injuries, it was deducted that Valor was the innocent victim of the sickening blood-sport of organized dog fighting. Organized dog fighting is illegal in all 50 states due to the cruel and inhumane manner in which domesticated dogs are forced into a pit to fight to their death against another dog.

One might assume that all the victims of this crime are athletic dogs like Valor, but this is not the truth. Dog fighters often use stray dogs as training “bait” for the dogs like Valor. These stray, but sometimes stolen, dogs are often beloved family pets. The citizens of neighborhoods where dog fights are held are also the victims in this “faceless” crime – along with the illegal dog fighting come illegal gambling, guns and drugs. Children in these neighborhoods hear the dying cries of these poor canine victims and must wonder where the line of humanity lies between human and canine.

While many in Indianapolis choose to believe that organized dog fighting is not a “problem” for the Circle City, the breed advocates of Indy Pit Crew know differently.

The members of Indy Pit Crew work side-by-side with the animal welfare community in Indianapolis on a daily basis dealing with the results of dog fighting and the cowards who engage in this practice and turn the losing dogs out into the streets for the citizens to deal with.

Valor was five years old, never neutered or micro-chipped. His injuries told a story that he could not. This is a story of years of trauma, starvation, torture and neglect. All for the sick enjoyment of the humans who forced valor to fight their battles for them. The same humans who Valor looked to for care, companionship and loyalty.

What we learn from faithful dogs such as Valor is that often, in this world, the cowardly humans around us are the monsters we should fear. The only wrong thing that Valor ever did was be born a dog…and end up in the hands of the wrong human.

May we each remember Valor and the many dogs like him who live and die each day in the back alleys of our great City at the hands of our neighbors and fellow citizens.

Please do not let Valor’s death be in vain.

Anyone with information leading to the conviction of a dog fighter can receive a $1,000 reward by reporting information to (317) 262-8477.

For the citizens of Indianapolis who understand the epidemic of abuse and prejudice against dogs like Valor, I encourage you to get involved with your local humane society, breed rescue group or breed advocacy organization.
To the citizens who do not believe that dog fighting happens right here in Indianapolis or that it is a crime with a victim and a face, I encourage you to view the graphic pictures of Valor and be your own judge.

For pictures, visit http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t311/lexgaither/Valor/?albumview=slideshow

Indy Pit Crew is raising funds to pay for a Billboard in the area where Valor was found. They are also raising funds so that a LARGE reward (hopefully greater than $3000) can be offered to tipster's whose information leads to a conviction of the people responsible for Valor's torture.

I work for the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Indiana. Like all rescue organizations, we see our share of sad cases. Sheridan’s story, however, is one that I lose sleep over. After you read this, I believe you will agree that she deserves the chance that only your organization can give her.

This 4 ½ year old red chow mix first came to our attention in March of 2007. We received a call from Animal Control that the dog they had just seized from its owner was near death and in need of emergency medical care. She was taken to one of our veterinarians, who advised us that this poor dog had a compound fracture of her left front leg. The attached picture will show you the extent of the injury. Here’s the kicker: Sheridan had lived chained outside in the cold with this wound for over a month. She had compensated by walking on the top of her foot. FOR OVER ONE MONTH. The injury was septic, and her immune system was shot. She was given an emergency blood transfusion before they were able to operate on her leg, amputating it at the shoulder. On top of this, Sheridan was heartworm positive.

Given the neglect of her former owners, we were surprised to discover that her faith in humans remained steadfast. This wiggling, 3-legged girl just can’t stop kissing. However, since she had nothing positive before coming to us, she guards everything she cares about. Despite being a love bug, she failed her temperament test due to resource guarding over food and toys. Because she hadn’t given up on life, we didn’t give up on her. Instead, we worked with her in an attempt to overcome this need to defend her resources. She improved, but we have not been able to get her completely past it.

Sheridan went into foster care to begin heartworm treatment, and completed it with no problems. Once she was cleared by the vet, she went up for adoption. The need to guard her resources continued to haunt her, and began to include whichever human she bonded to. She was adopted out on 7/24/07, and returned on 8/2/07 for this very reason. She was adopted again on 8/23/07 and returned on 10/4/07, adopted 1/3/08 and returned on 10/11/09. After all she’s been through; she deserves a chance to finally have some security. Bouncing in and out of homes just makes her more insecure and does nothing to help her resource guarding.

Please, if you can give Sheridan a chance, contact us at animalprograms@hamiltonhumane.com or 317-774-1263. She deserves to have a FOREVER home!

Seven Kokomo, IN Cats need home after they lost of their elderly mom

My mother lost her battle with cancer this spring. I am desperate to find homes for her cats. These cats are all rescue cats and have been neutered or spayed. My mother took all of them in after someone abandoned them on her doorstep. Here is an introduction:

Denver is a 5 year old Malamute/Shepherd mix in need of a forever home. He came to us as a stray back in June with fly bites all over his ears, and we have not been able to place him here. Denver is pacing in the kennel so bad that he breaks his paws open on a regular basis. He has quit eating and is just declining so rapidly, the only way we can help him is to get him out of the shelter. Denver can be dominant, so we recommend an experienced owner and older children. He really is a sweet guy, though, and deserves a second chance! We are looking for a forever home or rescue to take him as soon as possible.

If you can open up your home or can help us place him, please contact the Humane Society for Hamilton County at 317-774-1263 or animalprograms@hamiltonhumane.com.

Unfortunately my brothers apartment does not allow animals and his roomate is not open to allowing him to stay there for much longer! I would take him but due to similar a roomate situation, cannot. The kitty is a bit quirky and is very friendly and engaging but will scratch your heels when you go to walk away from him. We are not sure why he does this! I'm not sure how the kitty feels about other cats, however some evidence exists to imply he may not be fond of them. He was found under a car with another cat who actually belonged to someone and they didn't seem to like each other very much! We are desperately looking for a home before my brother can no longer keep him. We do not want to take him to the shelter as it is not no kill. Is there anyone in the Bloomington area that could adopt or offer him a foster home? As appearance goes he's a pretty handsome kitty despite being a bit underweight and dirty. He's medium haired, all grey, and has a very cute face. Please let me know if you, or someone you know might be interested ASAP! Thank you for your concern!

Re: 6 year old Akita/Shepherd Rescue needs a home

I appreciate all your efforts on Hairy's behalf.

Re: 6 year old Akita/Shepherd Rescue needs a home

Nancy, I have passed this along to all my animal friends, some of whom, like me, are part of rescue groups. Hopefully we can find someone to take Hairy. I certainly feel for you.

You can contact me at RidinThMdntStrm@aol.com. I'm located in southwestern Indiana so we shouldn't be too very far apart.

As I said, I'll try very hard to find Hairy a safe place to go. [I would take him myself but we're not home enough to be good dog parents, and my husband has been very understanding about the 6 cats we have, lol]

Good luck to you honey!

Reneda

Oh! Do you happen to have a picture of him? I'd love to see him and I'm sure others would to. Thanks!

6 year old Akita/Shepherd Rescue needs a home

I rescued Hairy 4 years ago. He was the 7th animal my family has rescued. He had not eaten in days, was dehydrated and had been physically abused. He quickly made friends with other dogs I had rescued. According to the vet, he must have had his back legs pulled on as he does not want them touched. He is now neutered, on regular shot routine and heartworm tested and on preventive meds.

Unfortunately, due to the economy, I have been without a job for a year and losing my home. I can't take Hairy with me and must find him a home within the next month. He is not a good adoption candidate from a shelter because he is 6 years old and I think would not be good with young children who do not understand that they shouldn't touch his back legs or hips. He has still not forgotten what he went through. He is a loving dog and sleeps with me each night. He is a great watch dog!!! He hears and sees everything and lets me know about it. He has stayed home all day when I was working with NO accidents and never chewed anything. This is breaking my heart! I will furnish food for him for a year in return for a loving home. I can't bear the thought of him being put down at a shelter. All the no-kill shelters I have called are over capacity already.

Can anyone help, Please! This is breaking my heart and I need a good home for home. I will drive to anywhere in Indiana, Illinois or Wisconsin to get him a good home

Her and her five puppies were abandoned in a backyard and left to die. We took Chocolate in and with a little love and a lot of food were able to find her puppies safe homes and bring Chocolate back from the brink of death. We are now searching for her new forever family. Chocolate is about three years old and will be spayed and receive her rabies vac next week. She is severely animal aggressive and cannot be in a home where there are other dogs or cats. We believe her life began as a bait dog as her aggression stems from fear and anxiety and not prey drive. She is great with people of all ages and is a happy girl. She loves car rides and is learning how to play fetch. She is non-destructive and house/leash and crate trained. Chocolate is desperately in need of a forever family. Will you give her the chance?

Animals Needing Homes : Sweet Senior Rotti (with one eye) needs a loving retirement home!

Carlos is a 10 year old male senior rotti. He came to us because his former owner couldn't keep him any longer. He is a well-mannered, great dog who loves people a lot. His tested as a Meet Your Match purple "Couch Potato". He longs for an adult home - because of his one eye he is best placed with adults. He would need to be an only pet since other dogs make him nervous and he isn't fond of cats. We recently had him in a foster home and he did very well; was well behaved and bonded quickly with his foster mom. Unfortunately his foster mom had a prior commitment to go out of town so only could keep him a few weeks. Carlos is now back at that shelter. Poor guy is sad : (

He also arrived at our shelter with an entropian eye (his eye was dying and he was in pain). We made a plea to out community and raised $500 to get his painful eye removed which was vet recommended. We have also gotten him neutered and all his vet care and vaccines. He LOVES people but everyone who looks at him has other pets.

Our shelter is in a small community on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We are desperate to get Carlos into a loving home or rescue. We have many many videos on him on our website and other pets for adoption websites. We have made posters and have them around our community. We have paid for ads in our local paper to advertise him, but all with no luck. He is getting stressed here even though we are doing all that our small shelter can for him.

We need to place him! He deserves a loving home. Please don't wait to contact me ASAP at dawn6639@verizon.net if you can help save anyone from being euthanized today....a rescue commitment will be enough to save them from being put down today until transport can be arranged.

Thank you-
Dawn Sutherland
Hi Everyone,

I hope that you are all enjoying a nice Mother's Day! I just wanted to put out an update to let you all know that there are still MANY dogs that are released tomorrow, 5/11/09, that still do not have a rescue commitment to save them :( Please take a look below at all the great dogs that are in need of rescue and have a very short time to find it. The dogs released on Monday include, Sawyer, Tessa, Howie, Marshall and Gina....Gina did have a rescue commitment, but I was told today that they now can not take her so she is in need again. These 5 dogs will all be euthanized at the end of the day tomorrow if a rescue can not save them so please don't wait to contact me if you can help any of them. I also wanted to let you know that a rescue did offer to take Sophie into their group, so she will be safe.

All of these dogs are located at a high-kill animal control facility in NW IN. This facility does not do public adoptions, so their only hope is to be saved by A RESCUE....these dogs can not be released to individuals. If these dogs are not rescued by their release date, they will be PTS! Please take a look at the attached pictures and if you can help any of them, please contact me at parsedEmail parsedEmail parsedEmail parsedEmail parsedEmail

dawn6639@verizon.net as soon as possible. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT THE SHELTER!

Even if you can't help....please cross-post to other rescues that you think may be able help. If cross-posting, please include ENTIRE post so that people do not contact the shelter. We have very limited transport resources, but will do our best to help get them to the Chicagoland area.

GINA
Gina looks like she may be a very petite Pointer mix with a very pretty chocolate colored coat. She is a young female that was found as a stray and only appears to be about 8 months old. She is a very tiny girl who is only about knee high and about 30-35 pounds. She is a big ball of energy and wants to play, play, play! She is a happy and friendly little girl with people and would like nothing more than for someone to get her the heck out of that place! She does not seem to mind the other dogs.
RELEASED: MONDAY 05/11/09

SAWYER
Sawyer is an orange and white colored Am Staff/Pittie mix. He is a young male that was found as a stray and appears to be about 1 year old. He is medium sized and weighs about 45 pounds. He has beautiful green eyes and an adorable pink nose! He is super sweet and friendly with people. He is a very happy dog that never stops wagging his tail. He does not seem to mind the other dogs.
RELEASED: MONDAY 05/11/09

TESSA
Tessa is a fawn colored Pittie/Bulldog mix. She is a female that appears to be about 1 year old. This poor girl was found living in an abandoned house with the other inmates Howie and Marshall. It looks as if they have been left on their own for a while as this poor girl is extremely filty dirty and skinny. She is medium sized, about knee high and around 40 pounds. She is an extremely friendly and happy girl that is full of kisses (yes, this dirty girl snuck in kisses on me) and tail wags. Her pictures do not do her justice at all, she is very cute! She does not seem to mind the other dogs, especially her buds Howie and Marshall.
RELEASED: MONDAY 05/11/09

HOWIE
Howis looks like he could be a Shepherd/Hound mix. His markings make him looks like a Shepherd that has been put into a smaller hound body :) He is a male that appears to be about 3-4 years old. He is another one of the dogs that was found living in an abandoned house with Tessa and Marshall. He is also extremely dirty, but is still absolutely adorable. He is medium sized, about knee high and around 40 pounds. He is a very happy and friendly dog with people. He does not seem to mind the other dogs, especially his buds, Tessa and Marshall.
RELEASED: MONDAY 05/11/09

MARSHALL
Marshall looks like he might be a Hound/Terrier possibly Pit Bull mix...he has 2 striking blue eyes, so I am not sure what breed those came from :) He is another one of the dogs that was found living in an abandonded house with Howie and Tessa. He is also extremely dirty and very skinny and he has something wrong with one of the toes on his back foot. One of the toes appears misshaped and almost looks like 1/2 of it is missing? I am not sure what is going on with that, but he was leaving a little blood on the floor when he walked....so he would need immediate vet care to fix that. He is extremely happy and energetic and very happy to visit with people, he is a very nice boy! He does not seem to mind the other dogs, expecially his buds Howie and Tessa.
RELEASED: MONDAY 05/11/09

SAMANTHA....working on a commitment for her, should have confirmation by Monday!
Samantha appears to be a very small Black Lab mix. She is a a female that was found as a stray and she is about 1 to 1-1/2 years old. She is a petite girl that is about knee high, but she is very emaciated and only weighs about 25-30 pounds. She is an energetic girl that is not too happy about being help prisoner at the shelter! She is a happy and friendly girl that just wants someone to take her home! She does not seem to mind the other dogs.
RELEASED: TUESDAY 05/12/09

CHESTER
Chester is a Cocker Spaniel mix. He is a male that was found as a stray and he appears to be a little older, maybe 4-5 years old. He is a medium sized dog that is about knee high and around 35-40 pounds. This little man is so sweet and so mellow! He has such a laid back personality that he would make a great addition to any family. He is currently very dirty, matted and his eyes have some discharge coming from them, but one he is all groomed up and vetted I bet he will be looking and feeling so much better. He does not seem to mind the other dogs....he pretty much just ignores them :)
RELEASED: WEDNESDAY 05/13/09

ALL OF THESE DOGS CAN BE VIEWED BY CLICKING THE LINK BELOW:
http://web.me.com/tendogs/INDIANA/Welcome.html

Thank you-
Dawn Sutherland
Dog Rescue Volunteer
219-730-7526

Animals Needing Homes : Thanks for helping.

Everything was taken care of.....
