Dodger is in relatively good health, weighs 88lbs and just received his parvo, distemper and corona vacinations. Ruger on the other hand is very over weight. He weighs 110 lbs and has just recieved his parvo, corona and distemper vacinations. They go back on September 14th for their rabies vacinations. They like taking walks on the leash and really settle down once the walk begins. My neighbor comes over three tiimes a week to help walk them and they do well with her also They really need permanent homes. Please let me know if you know of anyone who can give them a permanent home.

So funny to see this now. We'd sooner give up our kidneys then any one of the loves of our lives. We have worked it all out and can't imagine life without 1 of our 9 babies. But now we've acquired 2 very large black labs that need a forever home. (9 cats and 3 dogs may be too much for us to handle long term. )

I pulled a lovely young coonhound boy from the euth list at a local shelter in Utah. Angie Brainard, founder of the North Idaho Coonhound Rescue, will take him in if he can get to her. I have a ride for him from Salt Lake City to Boise on Friday, July 10th, arriving about 2:00 pm.

Can anyone get him from Boise Kennels to safety with Angie? He's been in a shelter for a very long time.

Shadow and Sheba are FIV positive 17 week old kittens. Male and female. They can be retested in 2 months to see if they are a true positive. We only have temporary foster home for them and we won't keep them in a kennel for 6 months. That's not fair to them. If you know someone who doesn't have other cats and maybe has dogs, these two would make a great new family addition. They will do great with kids also. They are only contagious to other cats so people and other animals aren't at risk. FIV is mostly spread thru deep bite wounds from one cat to another.

We also have a petitie 9 month old adorable little "Cassie Cow Girl" who is also FIV positive. Her mom and half of her siblings tested positive and Cassie tested negative. But when we retested her 2 months later, she was positive. She is too adorable and healthy to euthanize. She's a character. She drools when she is happy and gives gentle kisses and love bites. Who ever adopts her will be one lucky family! She wouldn't do well with children or super hyper dogs.

We are willing to transport them to new, screened approved homes.

Smokey is an active and healthy 6-years-young Chow/Shepherd/Rotti mix. He has been with 11th Hour Rescue for over 2 years. He is currently at our shelter, but is occasionally fostered by a volunteer with 6 other dogs. If you want a buddy for your dogs, Smokey’s the best! Smokey LOVES other dogs (he knows to be gentle with smaller ones) and is great with his foster parents, however he has “guarding issues”. Trying to “protect” his home and owners has lead to biting. He has NEVER gone after his fosterers and trusts them 100%. His caregiver can take food away from him; check his teeth, paws, mouth; give him a bath…pretty much handle him however they want. He is also crate-trained and housebroken.

Smokey is a “big puppy” who lives to play with and meet new dogs. Yard time is fun time for Smokey! His wariness about trusting people stems from low self-esteem and past abandonment. He does not show outwardly aggressive body language when nervous, which means that he would require a dog savvy home. Once Smokey bonds with you, he would never go after you – and he bonds quickly. His forever family would increase his confidence and trust as a “nervous aggression” dog. Someone who knows when company visits, he must be crated or put in another room to avoid the “guarding” behavior.

He is a great dog that deserves a chance at having a loving home, because he has so much love and loyalty to give to you!

Smokey is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccinations.

99% Save Rate for McPaws!!!

In spite of the economic down turn and more animals being abandoned and surrendered, the last quarter of 2008 was a great for the animals at McPaws. 99% were adopted or returned to owners. And this wasn't just a point in time, for the year, 2008, 93% were saved. The atmosphere at McPaws of care and compassion for animals and people by staff and volunteeers makes it "the place" to visit, volunteer and adopt.

These successes should be shouted from the roof tops to inspire others that we can reach the goal of no more homeless pets.

Just seven days after Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) launched its public effort to end the use of live dogs from a local animal shelter for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) training at Idaho State University (ISU), the school announced it would end the practice!

PCRM Research Program Coordinator Ryan Merkley says, "We couldn’t have done it without your calls, e-mails, and letters to the school’s president."

An Idaho State Journal article published yesterday stated that ISU “announced Friday it has suspended the use of live dogs . . .” In the future, the course will use “high-tech mannequins that simulate human functions.” PCRM’s campaign against ISU’s use of dogs sparked other media coverage in Pocatello, Boise, and elsewhere, raising awareness of this issue among people in Idaho and across the region.

Advocates' swift work has helped end animal suffering and improve medical education in Idaho.

Now PCRM needs your help to do the same thing in New York.

While over 90 percent of U.S. and Canadian facilities no longer use animals for ATLS training, Albany Medical Center (AMC) continues to use live pigs for these courses, despite the availability of nonanimal alternatives like the TraumaMan System from Simulab.

Please e-mail, call, or write to AMC president and CEO James J. Barba and politely ask him to end animal use in the institution’s ATLS courses. Being polite is the most effective way to help these animals.

On Nov. 12, 2008, PCRM will file an official complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture citing the unlawful use of live animals by AMC. The complaint cites an ongoing 2007-2008 survey by PCRM, which has so far received responses from 193 U.S. facilities offering ATLS courses. The survey has found that 177 of those facilities (more than 90 percent) exclusively use nonanimal models for instruction. In addition, the vast majority of those 177 facilities exclusively use the TraumaMan System.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- October 20, 2008 -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation, Secaucus, NJ is voluntarily recalling one specific lot of Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot are potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Hartz is fully cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration in this voluntary recall.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs, and, if there is cross-contamination caused by handling of the rawhide chips, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The product involved is 4,850 - 2 pound plastic bags of Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips, lot code JC23282, UPC number 3270096463 which were distributed to a national retail customer. While the normal testing that Hartz conducts through an independent outside laboratory did not detect the presence of Salmonella in any Hartz rawhide products, sample testing conducted by another laboratory did indicate the presence of the bacteria in a sample bag of the Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips. Hartz is aggressively investigating the difference in test results and the potential source of the problem.

Although Hartz has not received any reports of animals or humans becoming ill as a result of coming into contact with this product, Hartz is taking immediate steps to remove the product from all retail stores and distribution centers. Dog owners who purchased this product should check the lot code on their bag, and, if the code is not visible, or if the bag has lot code JC23282 imprinted thereon, they should immediately discontinue use of the product and discard it in a proper manner.

Consumers can contact Hartz at 1-800-275-1414 with any questions they may have and to obtain reimbursement for purchased product.

My mother has a sweet little terrier mix dog that is almost completely paralyzed on the back end. She has been that way for many years but has had a good quality of life. My mom has cared for her well and, until recently, taken the responsibility very seriously. My mom's health has taken a turn and the care of a special needs pet has become too much for her. They are considering euthanizing because of their lack of resources. Any suggestions for a place that takes handicapped/special needs pets? Thanks...

Saturdy I found a dog just hit by a car. He was bleeding profusely so I rushed him to my vet. They stopped the bleeding and called the owners. They said they were on their way out of town and to just "put him down." Of course I couldn't. I took him to the Vet hospital and cleaned out my savings to save him. His name is Shep and his a 20 month old male border collie mix (fixed). He has been great with kids and dogs. I plan to keep him for the month until his leg is healed but need to find a permanent home. I could also use some help with the vet bills.

Please help MeeMee! My elderly owners recently died and I need a new, secure, loving home without children. I'm an indoor kitty only and a special need kitty, loving but shy and wary until I learn to trust you. I need patient, loving care. Six years ago I was feral but I adjusted. Please adopt me before I "re-feral" or my future is scary. I'm clean, love to be petted and brushed, will sit next to you but an not a lap cat...and I have BEAUTIFUL blue eyes and a soft, gorgeous coat. I need a quiet, predictable environment to feel safe. Important TimberWolf Organic Dog Food Recall Information
Due to recent reports from some customers, the TimberWolf Organic
company has ordered that two formulas from three specific dates be
pulled from the shelves. These are:

Dakota Bison with 'best by date' of 12 Feb 2009
Ocean Blue with 'best by date' of 20 Feb 2009
Ocean Blue with best by date' of 8 March 2009

The reported symptoms include dogs refusing to eat, diarrhea or
vomiting. TimberWolf Organics says that while the problem is
inconsistent (not every dog eating food from those dates/bag show the
symptoms and not every bag), to err on the side of caution have
decided to pull the formulas produced with the above dates. Initial
testing has come back negative for problems and further testing is
pending results.

TimberWolf Organics states that no other formulas and Ocean Blue and
Dakota Bison with dates other than ones listed above are not affected.

I volunteer over at Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter in Bozeman, MT and I am currently seeking a home for a 3-year-old German Shepherd mix by the name of PJ. PJ had a run in with a tractor before he came to us which resulted in him losing his right eye. He is blind on one side, and also sustained some damage to his hips that may lead to amputating one of his hind legs in the future. PJ is currently scheduled to be put down within the coming weeks, and I am desperately seeking a home for this gentle, fun-loving dog.

PJ is neutered, vaccinated, and knows all his basic obedience commands. He is a very sweet guy who loves people and gets along well with most other dogs. He needs a loving home that will be able to give him the time, patience, and loving care he needs to be a good pet.

I am willing to transport PJ to potential homes within Montana and the surrounding states (Idaho, Washington, South Dakota, ect.). I am also offering to pay for PJ's food and medical costs for the first year.

Please contact me if you think you know of a good home or sanctuary for this beautiful dog!

Hello, I am sending out an SOS to please talk to your friends and family about trying to become a foster parent- Northwest Animal Companions needs YOU in order to help them- here's another example of a person in need.....

Chris has lost his house so he and his dog are living in his car.

Sadie is loving 3-4 yr old spayed female great dane and lab mix - all black in color.

He has tried finding her another good home but since she is a larger dog, has not found anyone yet.

The weather is going to get hot, predicted 90 degrees this Saturday!!

Sadie patiently waits for him in the car while he is at work.

Animals are not allowed in human shelters.

Here is another wonderful dog spayed, house trained, current on her shots and without a foster home to put her in- she will end up at the pound and they both will have broken hearts.

Please, Please talk to people and ask them to give fostering a try- it cost them nothing, NAC takes care of food and vet care if needed- they only need a place to keep a foster and love to give.

Believe me the returns you get from helping other people and these animals find a new loving permanent home is PRICELESS!!
