i don't know anyone near everygreen, but i went to a trainer in ft collins, Julie Yamane at The Canine Learning Center, who worked with me with both of them, the school is on the web under that name and if you contact them they may have suggestions about a trainer closer to you

good luck, i can attest from fostering and rescue work that it is REALLY hard to home a cattle dog, there are many, many in rescue and not that many people who are prepared to give them the life they need, she is beautiful and i hope it works out so the beagle can have a happy life too!

Re: Please help Pita find a new home...

I feel your pain, I had a 130lbs Ridgeback who was absolutely awesome with kids, dogs, cats, in fact he was foster daddy to many kittens and puppies. Then one day I found a toothless 130 lbs giant Boxer running through our neighborhood, and had to take him in, both hated each other, they would fight whenever possible, I did everything, from banning toys, to feeding one outside and one inside. After 2 years of them having at each other, I couldn't take the stress. I would always fear that although I always separated them when I was gone, somehow they would find a way to each other and I would come home and find a tragedy in my house, and of course my Boxer would get the worse of it since he had no teeth, I had to make a heartbreaking decision and put my Boxer "Hurcules" up for adoption. He found a forever home with two little girls which he took care of and believe it or not... Another 130lbs Boxer named "Axel" that actually liked him. Although it was tough letting him go, he was much happier with his new family, he didn't have to worry about getting beat up.

We have had her since she was four months old, and we rescued her from Colorado Puppy Rescue. Pita is a great listener. She wants to serve and obey. She loves a good hike and a belly rub. When you walk into the room she is fast to roll over on her back begging you to rub her belly. We have always trusted her to come when she is called. When we take her on walks in our mountain neighborhood she always goes without a leash because we know that she will stay close and come running back to you the momment you call her name. I have always felt very safe with her around, she is a great guard dog letting me know whenever there is something alarming outside. But as you know, I would not be writing this if she didn't have a few faults.

Pita needs to be an only dog in the house. We also have a Beagle and Pita has gotten into it with him many times, to the point where she has actually bitten off a chunck of his ear. Due to this I would not trust her with young children as well. We have tried our best to work with her, but we know that she needs a home where she could get all the attention and she wouldn't have to share with another dog. I know she would do the best on a farm or a ranch, where she could be given a job and show off her listening skill.

I hope you could please help me find a new home for Pita. It is going to break my heart when she leaves, and I know I am going to shed a lot of tears, but she deserves the best forever home where she can be the only dog.

Here's some answers to your questions.

1. I became involved with Best Friends because I've always been sympathetic to non-human animals and my mom was a member. She was the one who introduced me to Best Friends.

2. I tell people who've never heard of Best Friends that is a large, successful, and excellent organization for the rescue, rehabilitation, and sanctuary of animals in need.

3. Best Friends has the best kind of social impact and importance because it is a manifestation of the principle of mercy. However, it's impact is very limited compared to the scope of the phenomenon it addresses. Fact is that the vast majority of people don't care that much about animals and never will; and even most members and employees of Best Friends eat and/or wear, and/or use products that are made from animals or tested on animals.

4. Success for Best Friends? It's already achieved that. It is a sizeable, self-sustaining organization for the advancement and practice for animal welfare. Don't think it can do better than that.

5. Biggest obstacle Best Friends faces is the ingrained structure of the human psyche. Most people will never see other forms of animal life as worthy of the same consideration a person deserves. This is an insurmountable obstacle.

Toffles Needs a New Home

Hi Everyone,

Toffles is a two-year-old, neutered, healthy, short hair cat with a friendly, playful personality. His family can't keep him anymore because of moving and allergies.
I have also done a few fund/supply raising events locally and donated some items to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

I think the basis for change is best focused on individuals and groups. While government regulations are needed, they only enforce the 'law', they don't stop the action the individual took. For example, Michael Vick. He knew dog fighting was illegal, but did it anyway. If he had been taught (earlier in life) how to treat dogs, he wouldn't have been involved in dog fighting in the first place.

I never thought about indifference but you make a very good point. Not all people look at animals the way an advocate does. To some people, animals are something created for human use, not a living creature with 'feelings' and love to give. As I write this I think about my boss. She is one of the people that don't think or care about animal welfare and has even poked fun at me for my involvement. It is quite sad to me that she feels this way. I know what joy and unconditional love an animal can bring, so she is missing something very special.

Re: Golden Retriever Freedom Rescue: check our new website!

Hi! I have been researching golden retriever rescue's . I did come across your's. I volunteer with a shelter who has 8 year golden retirever. He is a senior now and has been there for almost 4 years. Could you give me any adivce or can I contact you directly. He really deserves better than an out door gravel run to live our his days in. I would appreciate any information you could give me. Thanks you.

Can you tell me what sorts of things you do as a network volunteer? Do you do local work in CO, or online, or have you been down to the Sanctuary? If you don't mind sharing, I'd love to know.

When I read about the success stories of adoptions and the campaigns, I'm always very inspired by the results. But I'm always curious if 'grassroots' is enough. Do you think its more important to change individual peoples and groups idea about how to treat and care for animals or to try and change animal rights legislature on the nationwide scale? Obviously both is best, but which do you think should or has to come first?

Do you think that indifference is also an obstacle that animal rescue organizations face? You don't mention that in your answers, but I would think that it might be an even more prolific problem than people who mistreat animals (though, maybe not as terrible a problem)?

I appreciate you taking the time.

Re: your thoughts and feedback on Best Friends in CO

1. I saw John and Georgia on the 'Ellen' show and Georgia's story affected me. It was right then that I found BFAS on the internet and applies to be a network volunteer.

2. I tell people that BFAS is a rescue and rehab program for animals that would normally be put down due to health, behavior or lack of housing space issues. I tell people that BFAS offers every animal a second chance.

3. I feel that BFAS shows people that kindness and 'not judging a book by it's cover' is the right way to live. As the BFAS motto states, kindness to animals means a better world for all of us. Kindness to animals can teach that kindness to others (humans) goes hand in hand.

3. BFAS has already acheived success. The rescue and rehab of even one animal is success. The education of one human about how to treat and care for animals is success. BFAS has far surpassed this.

4. I think that all animal rescue organizations are going to face 2 obstacles: people that hurt and abandon animals; and funding. I think that these obstacles are unfortunately not going to go away.
