Pet photography in LA

Hi, does anybody have a recommendation for a good pet photographer in Los Angeles? The area would be Culver City/Westwood, more or less. Are there photographers that would come to a home to photograph pets? Or do a photo shoot in a park? Our animal family includes 2 cats and 2 dogs, so it would be GREAT to get a family portrait for the holidays!

I the media gallery section of Hawaii Go Local there are plans and pix for a feline habitat and it can also be made into a bird aviary and taken apart for relocation if ever needed.

Have you contacted any horse and agricultural associations locally to help get the word out or for a list of locations?

How about growers at local farmers markets with farms?

Horse vets and farrier also have contacts.

Most likely you have thought of these already, however just wanted to add them as you were asking for assistance.

Found baby kitten. Hit by a car , now has a broken jaw and nerve damage to front paw. i can only afford the $,1000.00 that it wil take to fix her jaw?? Please help us. Contact me at michelep@astaintl.com. Her name is Buttons ( shes as cute as a button) She just had surgery and is doing well. We might be able to save her paw. Thanks to Animal Bird Clinic in Mission Viejo CA. Dr. Block and Dr. Coward who are splitting the bill with me. What a great day it is.

Hello!

Many of us have asked ourselves and each other, how can we be more efficient and effective in our TNR and rescue work? How can we help more people who call in to our rescue groups and shelters needing advice or other assistance, but without burning ourselves out? How can we get more people involved in rescue work? We need new blood as well as helping to re-inspire those that are finding it difficult to volunteer because they can't do an entire trapping job from A to Z and would like to do a "portion" of a trapping job, or other type of rescue work. How can we effect change in the attitudes of our governmental bodies, as well as the laws and ordinances that govern feral cat policy in our county?

We thought what better time than now, as kitten season starts to wind down and the holidays approach, to get together and talk about two exciting tools that we think can change the way we work and change how we are able to respond to the public:

1. Cat Resource Center (CRC): Scott Hamilton built a website called the CRC (www.catcenter.org), that was born from an idea that Rosi and others brought to the SBHCC quite some time ago. Scott will introduce the CRC to us, and explain how we can use it as a tool for getting trapping and other jobs done more efficiently and effectively. Specifically, (1) how the CRC can allow us to start working in territories or "Community Cat Zones" for focused trapping efforts, and (2) how it can streamline volunteering for specific aspects of a trapping job or other rescue work, rather than taking on an entire job from A to Z.

Scott built the CRC as a tool for the trapping and rescue community, as well as an information source and central request center for the public. It is ours to mold into what works best for us to get things done for the cats. This will be an interactive session for us to learn what the CRC can do, to ask questions, and to make suggestions.

2. We'd like to explore forming small groups of people to brainstorm ideas for improving the lives of feral cats in Santa Clara County. There is no pressure here! People can choose to work with a team on an issue or not. We want you at this meeting even if you are not able to work in a subgroup, because you will likely have some great ideas to contribute! Will we tackle these ideas in 6 months, a year, 5 years? Who knows, but we want to get started because there are some great ideas out there and some have already been implemented and are working pretty well, but could use some adjustments and improvements!

On the list so far are:

1) Feral Reclaim programs at shelters

2) Feral Freedom program at shelters

3) Microchipping ferals and how to have chips available for all trappers

4) Educating animal control officers on TNR and arming them with materials to hand out to the public

5) Legal issues - approaching Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors to get TNR officially written into county ordinances as the preferred method of feral cat management on county property

We want to add other topics that you think need to be addressed - please email your ideas when you RSVP!

California Team Updates November 2009

Here are your team tidbits for November! Remember, if you add me to your friend list (I’m sdrd1031), you can get additional updates now and then directly to your inbox! We’re now more than 1,100 strong on the California golocal and still growing!

Starting in October, we started to put upcoming events in a forum topic, an idea I borrowed from another team leader. The monthly forums seem to be getting some attention and we hope you’ll check there first when you’re looking for an adoption event, spay/neuter day or just a fun holiday pet parade! California fans can add events too—just click ‘reply’ to the forum and add the basics (date, time, location, cost and what the event is for) of an upcoming event for that month to let other fans know what’s happening. Team members also will add events as we get them—and there also are volunteer opportunities to be found.

Wondering where those adorable adoptables on our home page come from? In partnership with Petfinder.com, Best Friends is able to pull all Petfinder animals listed in California at shelters and rescues with Petfinder accounts and feature some at random every day. Anyone looking for a pet in San Francisco only need to click on the city and then the type of animal and all the available pets in that city will come up. There’s one catch—take note rescuers and shelters—you must enable your Petfinder account so that third parties can see your animal information. Then people will be able to view them right from the Best Friends Network.

Speaking of good news, Network Charities has now launched (network.bestfriends.org/groups)! Any 501c3 nonprofit (rescue, foundation that raises money for shelters, etc.) can apply on that link. Once approved, the group can have its own micro-site on Best Friends Network, seek volunteers, and seek donations It’s all free (except the processing fee for donations). And it gives them more name recognition to be part of the Best Friends communities, which hopefully will result in more adoptions and fewer homeless pets!

The No More Homeless Pets Conference was a huge success in October and drew more people even than last year. Several Californians (yours truly included) volunteered at the conference and others attended sessions. It’s a great networking opportunity and a great way to learn about the issues of the day and how people have had success addressing those issues. One session focused on the tendency of some groups to make it hard for people to adopt. A comment by one of the panelists (who was denied a dog several years ago even though he works in animal welfare) stayed with me. So, I’ll close from this not-exact quote as food for thought: Rescue groups and shelters should presume that people who make an effort to seek a pet to adopt should be presumed to be good people unless proven otherwise instead of treating them like bad people who have to prove they’re okay.

Good Barn Cat Homes Needed - Southwest Riverside County

Urgent - Help is needed in finding barn homes for healthy, sterilized, and vaccinated feral and undomesticated cats that are destined for the pound. Elderly Perris couple with health issues has been ordered by Animal Control to "get rid of" all but 9 of their beloved cats and, therefore, we are looking to relocate these cats. These cats make ideal residents for stables, barns, farms, or other suitable outdoor environments with shelter because they control mice and rats. Therefore, the advantage of giving these cats a good place to live is a reduction in rodent population. Caretaker responsibilities for new owner include providing daily food and water, protection from the elements, and long-term veterinary care. Moving to a new home is stressful for anyone, including cats, and a period of adjustment is needed. The cats must be confined for at least 3-4 weeks. This confinement is essential for relocation to be successful and for the cats to accept their new home and be chasing mice out of your grain with enthusiasm! No adoption fee required. As of Nov. 7, these cats are out of the hoarder's house but in very temporary quarters. There are 7 males, 5 females and 4 four-month-old kittens. Some are fixed, some aren't yet. All need foster or forever homes. Another kitten was found in the middle of a busy S.F. Valley highway and has joined the others needing a home.

Clavamox for feral cat

I have been feeding and taking care of a feral cat for the past 6 years. He is too wary to retrap, and sometimes he gets an abcess from being in a fight. I can not bring him to my vet because I can't catch him, so I am trying to find someone who is willing to give me some clavamox or other antibiotic used for abcesses. Husky Mix NEEDS a Home

Free Husky Mix to a good home.

"Sky" is a 6yr husky mix, about 50 lbs., that is very calm, shy, and sweet. She simply likes to hang out and be loved. Sky is very low key and well trained.

Sky gets along well with women and children, and most other dogs, but does not do well with men unless she gets warmed up to some. Sky has had two prior litters of adorable puppies and is not spayed.

She has been moved around a lot as she comes from a military family, and just needs a nice loving place to call home with people that have even just a little extra time to care for her. Sky is a great friend to have.

Can anyone help find her a home so she doesn't have to go to the animal shelter/pound?
