After reading the July/August issue of Best Friends, I became aware of Animal Hospice. Is this available to folks in NW Atlanta or in Atlanta at all? Please respond if you are aware of such and where I could contact them. I would like to be involved as a volunteer.

Cannot keep dogs at vet hospitals much longer!

Bad news, I had to cut into the fence this morning to get the cats out of the shelter. By noon the shelter will have about two feet of water in it. We need rescue to step up and help us get these dogs from Catoosa Veterinary Hospital and East Ridge. Animals Hospital

Rescues can pull our "Guardian Angel" dogs as an adoption on we will pay for the spay/neuter most have has rabies and all have has DA2PP & Bordetella at the shelter.

Health and Safety Tips for Pets : How to tell if your cat is sick

Our cats are notorious for not letting us know when they're sick until they're really sick and can no longer hide it. By that time, medical treatment may be much more involved than if they had given us early warning signs of their illness. This is why it is crucial that you examine your cats regularly and take them to the vet for regular “well cat” check ups. It is worth the cost of the check up and keeps cats healthy and happy. Additionally, it is usually less costly than treating an illness after it becomes well established.

The following are some warning signs that your cat may not be feeling well:
• Changes in chewing, eating and drinking habits
• Noticeable weight gain or loss in an adult cat
• Withdrawal from interaction with the family and other pets
• Changes in activity level
• Increased or decreased vocalization
• Changes in litter box habits
• Changes in grooming habits – either grooms less or excessively

If your cat shows any of the above signs, contact your veterinarian immediately and schedule an appointment.

Can I bring my dog? : Piedmont Park Dog Park

Piedmont Park is undergoing a 53-acre expansion, and the dog park is moving to a temporary location. It is now located near the Park Drive bridge, which is just south of the original spot. The stand-in location features about 11 acres of play space. Like its predecessor, it is separated into spaces for small dogs and large dogs. Within the dog park, dogs are allowed to run free as long as owners abide by the posted rules. Park representatives say they’re going to keep it as close to the original as possible. The renovated dog park is expected to open some time in 2010.

The dog park is free and is open from 6 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. Located at the corner of Monroe Drive and Park Drive, Atlanta. 404-875-7275, www.piedmontpark.org.

Internet Resources for Pets : DogsInDanger.com – Saving Dogs on Death Row

DogsInDanger.com is a nonprofit national shelter outreach program to help shelters save the lives of millions of innocent dogs. It is the brain child of Alex Aliksanyan, an animal advocate who made his fortune in the Internet travel business. He spent $500,000 of his own funds to start The Buddy Fund, Inc., a nonprofit organization that operates the website. The organization works with more than 120 shelters across the country that euthanize dogs when they no longer have space to keep them.
This website is an “in-your-face” site. Only dogs that are expected to be put to death are posted on the site along with a countdown clock with the estimated number of days of life remaining for the dog. The site includes success stories as well as a memorial page with photos of the dogs who could not be saved. This site provides a much-needed voice for innocent dogs who are simply homeless, unwanted or abandoned by their owners.
DogsInDanger.com is a technological breakthrough for connecting scared and abandoned shelter dogs with loving families who want them. According to the website, those involved in the organization “seek no other gain except for the happiness we see in the face of a dog as he faithfully walks out through the shelter doors, in perfect step with his loving new family.”

Health and Safety Tips for Pets : Do you have a fat cat or a pudgy pooch?

The media focused the animal welfare community’s attention on overweight pets several months ago when it covered the plight of “Princess Chunk,” (later determined to be a male cat named Powder) a 44 pound cat in New Jersey whose owner could no longer afford to care for her.
Our pets, just like us, suffer significant health problems and risks when they carry too much weight. Overweight pets have increased stress on their joints and vital organs, are more prone to injury, and are at a higher risk during surgery. They also have lower energy levels and are not as playful as their leaner counterparts.
Here are a few tips for determining if your pet could stand to lose a few pounds:
• Check your pet’s ribs – you should be able to feel them
• Check your pet’s breathing – if your dog huffs and puffs after running up the stairs or takes a while to recover from a short walk, he or she may have a weigh problem that needs your attention
• Check the base of the tail – although there should be a little fat there, too much is a bad sign
• Look down at your pet – check his or her silhouette from above – do you see a waist, can you see where the ribs end and the hips begin
It is up to pet owners to control their animals’ food intake and exercise level. If you think your pet needs to lose a few pounds, make an appointment with your vet who can help you build a realistic and low risk weight loss plan. And just like with humans, pet weight loss is a long term goal and will not happen overnight.

Health and Safety Tips for Pets : High Rise Syndrome

Cat owners need to be aware of a potentially deadly but easily preventable epidemic. Open windows let in the fresh air but if unscreened they pose a real danger to your cats. There are more and more instances of cats falling through unscreened windows and suffer shattered jaws, broken limbs, punctured lungs and even death. This predominately urban phenomenon is known as “high-rise syndrome.” Installing full window screens is an easy way to prevent your cat from becoming another victim of this syndrome.

Here are a few things to remember –
• Cats have survival instincts and do not generally jump from dangerously high places. Most falls are accidental.
• Cats have the ability to focus their attention on whatever interests them. Something interesting outside of the window, such as a bird or butterfly, may cause them to leap or lose their balance and fall.
• Many cat owners falsely assume that cats can take care of themselves since they have little fear of heights and seek out perches in high places. Although cats can cling to tree trunks, they have difficulty clinging to other surfaces, such as window ledges or bricks.
• Cats that fall from high places don’t land squarely on their fee but land with their feet apart which may cause severe head and pelvic injuries.
• Cats may be at greater risk of injury when falling shorter distances (two stories or less).
• Cats that fall from high places onto streets or sidewalks will be in an unfamiliar and potentially dangerous place. Don’t assume the cat did not survive the fall – immediately retrieve the cat and take it to a veterinarian for medical care. There is a 90% survival rate for cats that fall from windows.

I can send a picture of the beautiful cat Hillary I rescued in April. Her time has run out at the vet's office who has been boarding her. If anyone knows of a loving home, perhaps with other FIV positive cats, please let me know. Hillary is about 3 years old and is otherwise very healthy. She is a calico who loves to sit on your lap!

for two year old deaf Akita mix.. Had a very tramatic beginning in her life as she was thrown out of a moving car window in TN. I came to foster her when she was aprox five mo. old and she so deserves her very own wonderful loving, forever home..

Also , have an Akita/ mastiff mix , two years old... Have been fostering for over a year now and he is a big goofy boy that just wants to be loved.

Would love for these two precious dogs to get their own loving forever homes...

Health and Safety Tips for Pets : 8 week old Shih Tzu nipping

My co~worker just adopted an 8 week old male Shih Tzu last weekend. The puppy is doing the usual nipping and getting into their shoes, chewing on whatever he can get his mouth on, pulling out clothes from the laundry basket and nipping. This is making their 8 year old son, who has never had a pet before, "nervous".

Are there any tips or suggestions on how to literally "nip this nipping in the bud"? I'm going to suggest that she do some on~line research.

The parents have already decided to take him to obedience training.

ParkGrounds, located in Reynoldstown at 142 Flat Shoals Avenue, opened in May 2007 and features a large off-leash shaded dog park adjacent to the patio. Pooches can play with their new buddies while their owners sip coffee and tea and enjoy sweets and free WiFi. Four metro Atlanta locations of Einstein Brothers Bagels (Monroe Drive, Howell Mill Road, Wieuca Road and Hammond Drive) offer doggie treats at the drive-thru. The chain also offers a doggie bagel for $1.27. Dogs are not allowed inside the store but are welcome to join their owners on the patio as long as they are on a leash.

Health and Safety Tips for Pets : Mosquitoes – dangerous to pets

The high temperatures and heavy rains have resulted in increased numbers of mosquitoes in metro Atlanta. Animals as well as humans can contract the West Nile Virus from mosquitoes. These pesky insects can also transmit serious and deadly parasites to your pet resulting in heartworms. It only takes a single bite to transmit this virus and long hair offers no protection. And remember, mosquitoes can also get inside your house so indoor cats are not safe from this danger. If your pet is not on some type of heartworm preventative, ask your veterinarian to prescribe one.
