Until state legislators enact a set of Humane Standards for the Protection of impounded animals in Alabama, animals will continue to suffer at the hands of inadequately trained managmt and staff, exist in filthy conditions and blatant neglect, denied vet care and die without an ounce of compassion from inside or outside of the walls of the facility.

If so, hello again.

Request for "short version" , as per your post.

I found your post interesting and would like to know more about your stand on this issue. Personally, I think our government should assist all pet guardians/owners in spaying and neutering, instead of condemning unwanted, homeless animals to almost certain death in our so-called "shelters", which are mostly killing facilities (in my opinion). I also lean toward the thinking that MSN would not work with financially strapped citizens, especially those who don't care about their animals.....they would just turn the poor animal over to animal control rather than S or N the animal, therefore, the shelters would have huge intakes of animals with nowhere to go, except to die.

I am starting a "movement" to convince and encourage our state legislators to enact, write and adopt a set of humane standards for which all shelters in Alabama have to live up to, a dept. to evaluate, investigate and enforce these humane standards, etc. Alabama has no such entity, hence -- cruelty, neglect and unsanitary and unsuitable shelters operate without any overseer or agency to keep them in check - no protection for shelter animals.

If the crime of cruelty/neglect occurs within a city/county shelter, it is usually swept under the rug. Sadly, obviously, citizens as well as animal groups have not pro-actively sought a mandated set of standards for the abandoned and homeless animals consigned to a shelter, and probable euthanasia. The animal organizations, such as SPAC, Alabama Humane Federation, or any --have no authority to investigate or bring charges, except through the cooperation and public pressure on law enforcement. These cases are difficult to prosecute, with no willing officials to pursue the criminals within shelters/pounds.

I am convinced that citizens should ban together and demand protection, and a safe shelter and refuge for these helpless, innocent animals, who find themselves homeless through no fault of their own. Its time for our elected officials to step up for the animals in our state through legislation. (If its not a written, adopted law, all the recommendations and pleas are worthless. (Of course this is my opinion, but would be interested in yours and if you and your fellow animal advocates would consider joining in this mission.)

I knoooo, its not the complete answer to the heartbreaking problem of high rate of euthanasia in our state's shelters, but it is a start, a major benefit to the animals who are condemned to be turned over to animal control, shelters/pounds - and the pro-active adoption, spay/neuter and vet. care will have to follow, because it will be a key factor in the Humane Standards for Animal Shelters in Alabama, if it becomes a reality.

Thanks for any input, and information.

The group is in contact with state Senator Del Marsh from Anniston. He has already pre-filed a state-wide MSN bill which is not yet in committee and plans to sponor MSN legislation which is specific to Calhoun County. The pre-filed bill is not yet available for viewing. I'm told by his assistant that he sought similar state-wide MSN last year but he got so many calls and emails that it was essentially allowed to die on the vine, so to speak.

I don't know what those of you in this community know about MSN or feel about MSN. I do not believe Best Friends has a formal position on the subject and is triyng to remain neutral in the fight going on about MSN in California. If you do not know about MSN or do not have a position on it, I'd encourage you to read up about it now in the event that Senator Marsh's proposed bill grows legs and actually goes somewhere.

As a statement of fact, MSN is formally opposed by the HSUS, the ASPCA, Maddie's Fund, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association, among other rescue and animal welfare organizations across the country. Nathan Winograd of the No Kill Advocacy Center speaks to the very issue of MSN in his book, "Redemption: The Myth of Pet Overpopulation and the No Kill Revolution in America," and there is an informative .pdf on the NKAC site which pretty much sums up why MSN is a bad idea. Laura Allen, former Best Friends attorney and founder of the Animal Law Coalition, also wrote a short and informative piece on the subject which is easily available on the Internet.

We all know that animal welfare in Alabama is not sterling. We all know we kill far too many animals in shelters and we know that a large number of counties required by state law to have a shelter don't have a shelter at all. Taking care of animals has not historically been a priority for our state in terms of spending money.

I firmly oppose MSN for a variety of reasons. If you'd like to have a say on this issue in our state in the future, whether it comes up this year or some other year, please get ready to let yourself be heard.

I have no doubt that the group which is working toward MSN and which set up a web site to garner support for their efforts has the best of intentions. I believe them, however, to be uninformed and ignorant of the true reasons why animals die in shelters and what we can do about it. My personal experience is that they are determined to pursue this course and are not interested in any views contrary to their own. Someone has led them to believe that MSN is the answer so it is their one and only goal. I will do everything I can to oppose MSN and hope that some of you who share my position will consider doing the same.

There are other ways to reduce shelter deaths and we're working on bringing them together in Huntsville. If you want the short version of what we're doing here, drop me a line and I'll give you my take on it.

He has been with 11th Hour Rescue for over 2 years. He is currently at our shelter, but is occasionally fostered by a volunteer with 6 other dogs. If you want a buddy for your dogs, Smokey’s the best! You can see a video of Smokey at: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11162966

Smokey LOVES other dogs (he knows to be gentle with smaller ones) and is great with his foster parents, however he has “guarding issues”. Trying to “protect” his home and owners has lead to biting. He has NEVER gone after his fosterers and trusts them 100%. His caregiver can take food away from him; check his teeth, paws, mouth; give him a bath…pretty much handle him however they want. He is also crate-trained and housebroken.

Smokey is a “big puppy” who lives to play with and meet new dogs. Yard time is fun time for Smokey! His wariness about trusting people stems from low self-esteem and past abandonment. He does not show outwardly aggressive body language when nervous, which means that he would require a dog savvy home. Once Smokey bonds with you, he would never go after you – and he bonds quickly. His forever family would increase his confidence and trust as a “nervous aggression” dog. Someone who knows when company visits, he must be crated or put in another room to avoid the “guarding” behavior.

He is a great dog that deserves a chance at having a loving home, because he has so much love and loyalty to give to you!

Smokey is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccinations.

Please contact his fosterer tammy.probst.smith@gmail.com for more info.

Working together for Alabama animals : at loss...need advice on dogs OCD licking pawy til there RAW

I have a dog question for you. One of my dogs, Little Kon, has this problem with his feet, skin, and ears. He has been on steroids and antibiotics and yeast medicine a lot for it. Basically he breaks out in these itchy scaly patches, gets ear infections, patches around his face. His feet get so bad in between the pads he eventually cannot even put his feet down. Then he licks his feet obsessively and ends up with a yeast infection. One doc just kept doing the steroid/antibiotic/anti fungal thing when he would get pretty bad. Sick of that, I finally went to another vet for another opinion. She thought it was food allergy's. We put him on $100.00 per bag food for about 4 months. He did ok, but that was immediatly following a hefty dose of steroids and antibiotics and antifungal meds. Then he had another sever breakout. So, we finally end up at a Doggie Dermatoligist for $1400 worth of allergy testing. Turns our he is alergic to basically everything...highly to grass. So I gave him allergy shots and he is now through the initial treatment and at the maintenance stage. All of his problems have cleared...accept the feet problem. He still licks the constantly and they end up raw and yeasty. I kind of think it is an old habit because the allergy shots seem to keep him from breaking out. Have you ever seen one lick there paws CONSTANTLY? Do you have any ideas! I spray them with anti fungal, cortisone, and bacitracin. I also wash them in Malseb and soak them in epson salt warm water. That seems to help for a few hours, then he is back to licking and keeps them raw to the point sometimes he will hold one of them up.

ANY ADVISE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED

Working together for Alabama animals : Pit Bull rescued - needs a home

Breed:	Pit Bull
Size:	150lbs
Location:	Birmingham, Alabama
Age:	1 year
Sex:	Male
Altered
(Spayed, Neutered, etc):	Yes
Description: Casey was rescued from the side of a busy street. She was severely emaciated and neglected, weighing less than half her body weight, and had been abused. She responded beautifully to love and care. She is a beauty, mostly black with white touches, her ears and tail not cropped. Temperament-wise, she is a very docile, loving dog. She is superbly well-behaved, house-broken and crate trained. She is fully vetted. She is content to curl up with cats piled all around her. She gets along great with people

I have been an animal rescuer for many years and am in tune with pack dynamics and dog psychology. As a devout animal lover and preserver of life at extreme costs, it pains me greatly to submit that Madelynne has reached the end of the road in my home due to unpredictable levels of aggression towards my other dogs. I could fill volumes about what all I have done to try and ease pack tensions, to include hugely complicated and time-consuming attention to crating and separation activities. It is with a heavy heart that I have come to the point where Madelynne either needs to be placed with a sanctuary, adopted in a one dog home or be put down. I suspect she may have been a fighting dog or a bait dog at some point in her life although we will never know.

Her history with me for the past two years is as follows:

1. In late 2007, when my now ex, Michael, showed up with his dogs, Maija (my alpha at the time) was attacked twice by Madelynne and Angel (one of Michael's dogs). Each time we were there to immediately intervene. We chalked up these altercations to the volatile pack dynamics unfolding trying to integrate two packs. Extensive crating and supervision were established.

2. In early Dec 2007, I came home to find Baby Love, one of Michael's dogs nearly lifeless in the sunroom. She later died. Some of the other dogs had slight superficial cuts. Madelynne was covered with blood and severe lacerations on her head. Although I did not witness what happened, I concluded that an altercation started among Baby Love and Hannah. Madelynne broke out of her crate to join this altercation and ended up killing Baby Love.

3. Several days later, I came home to find Angel, one of Michael's dogs, dead in the yard. Another one of Michael's dogs, Lucy, was covered in blood and lacerations. I had accidentally left the crate doors to Madelynne and Lucy unlatched that morning. (I'll never forgive myself for this.) None of the other dogs, including Madelynne had any blood or lacerations on them. This appeared to be retribution killing within Michael's pack. Baby Love and Lucy were best buds and Angel may have been involved in the altercation that later took Baby Love's life. The reason I include this in Madelynne’s history is to demonstrate that her aggression and resulting fight-to-kill mode is not predictable. She was not involved in Angel’s death, although had ample opportunity to do so.

Throughout the few months that Michael and I were together, many of the dogs were crated during out absence, or kept inside, or all monitored while we were out in the backyard. Michael then left with his remaining dogs.

4. Several months after Michael left, Madelynne attacked Maija in the sunroom. Again, I was able to intervene before anyone was hurt. (Maija passed away later of natural causes) Nothing futher happened until....

5. November 2008, I rescued Hope. In early December, Madelynne attacked Hope in the sunroom and would have killed her without my intervention. Hope became an inside only dog, and a new and more extensive crating and activity schedule was established to manage pack dynamics.

6. March 30, 2009, Madelynne attacked Hannah and would have killed her had it not been for incessant warning barks from Courtney, my doxie. In trying to separate Madelynne, she tried to attack Hannah three more times before I was able to get her back to her crate.

Before this last incident, I had concluded that Hannah was vying for the alpha spot and was posturing against Cale. Hope may have gotten in the way, she was new to the pack, and Madelynne felt she needed to realigned. With Hannah's near death, it is now possible that Madelynne is vying for top spot.

I am basically at a loss as to the actual pack dynamics, but clearly the pack's instability is fluid, a moving target, if you will. For a fact, regardless of pack dynamics, Madelynne has become dangerous. When her aggression ignites it's lethal.

Madelynne is currently crated in my absence and will remain isolated from the other dogs until her future has been decided. I cannot have her in the house, as that is where I have Hope. I cannot leave her outside unsupervised with the other dogs. I have no idea what ignites her aggression and cannot chance another death or even near death. I have run out of ideas and the crating and activity schedule, and variations thereof, no longer works. It basically leaves Madelynne crated unless I am there to supervise.

Again, Madelynne, without reservation, is supremely intelligent, sweet, docile and well-behaved when it comes to people and animals, including dogs, except when something snaps in her and aggression turns her into a killer of her own kind.

I need help. Any suggestions/resolution/rehoming options would be greatly appreciated.
