Alabama Animal Shelter/Pound Reform, NEED STATE MANDATED STANDARDS AND ENFORCEMENT IN ANIMAL SHELTERS

Given the cases of neglect and cruelty, unsanitary conditions and rampant euthanasia occurring within Alabama Animal Shelters, and most of these crimes are going unprosecuted, most not even investigated. Many many, never reported. Shelter Animals need some protection.

Until state legislators enact  a set of Humane Standards for the Protection of impounded animals in Alabama, animals will continue to suffer at the hands of inadequately trained managmt and staff,  exist in filthy conditions and blatant neglect, denied vet care and die without an ounce of compassion from inside or outside of the walls of the facility.

If interested in writing to your legislators who represent your district, asking them to sponsor a bill to ensure inspections of operations of shelters, evaluate the care of the animals and enforce these laws on the animals behalf. They cannot speak, but we can be their voice. Please contact if you care about our state providing TRUE REFUGE AND SHELTER FOR OUR ABANDONED HOMELESS ANIMALS.

THANK YOU KINDLY - FOR THE ANIMALS.

How awful.  I'm right next door in Mississippi and had no idea things were so bad there.  Unfortunately, some people take those jobs just to have a job and don't really give 2 hoots about animals. I know a few people in AL so I'll let them know about your post and urge them to contact their legislator.  So, so sad!  Good luck to you--hope y'all are able to win this one for the animals.

Kelev:  Have you or your alliance contacted the HSUS Alabama State Director, Mindy Gilbert?  According to her profile on their website, one of her duties is to promote animal welfare legislation in your state.  Here's an excerpt from her profile:

Prior to her current position, she was director of Decatur Animal Services and the Walker County Humane Society. She also has worked as an animal cruelty investigator in the Greater Birmingham area.  Gilbert has been involved with the Alabama Humane Federation for more than 10 years, serving as president and as a board member. She has also chaired the legislative committee.  Additionally, she was involved in getting the state’s felony anti-cruelty law passed as well as laws that ban hog-dog fighting spectacles and that require animals to be spayed or neutered before they are adopted.

Probably worth contacting her if you haven't already.

Hi, thanks so much for your interest and concern, and contacting your in laws and friends. I still remember the sad sad case of Buddy, in MS.- usually with a chill and tears for his suffering and terrible death. Its a shame the legislators in MS didn't pass "Buddy's Law" too. Below is an article I wrote On In Defense of Animals, Project Hope in MS. (I hope I didn't send this before, if I did, I apologize) My other articles are listed on site too. Pleasure to "meet" you here and know others are interested in the protection of animals in shelters, stray and abused, abandoned animals. Keep up your good work!

Stay in touch and keep me posted to your activities too.
