Have A Heart for Chained Dogs 2007

Happy Valentines Day to Chained Dogs!

February 14 Update

As Valentines Day approached, the Have a Heart campaign revved into overdrive. The goal for this fifth annual event was to send out 8,000 valentines to chained or penned dogs. (Last year DDB sent out approximatley 5,000 valentines.)

In an update from DDB founder Tammy Grimes, she says, “Our target IS within reach, not 100% sure we've reached it, but we just may do so. We have been taking straggler addresses all week, so if anyone can find even one or two more, tell them to send them over ASAP to info@dogsdeservebetter.org

We've also had a remarkable increase in Valentine contributions over last year! Last year we had 118 separate contributors, this year we are already in the neighborhood of 250 contributors!

This year we gave out 2 valentines per address even if there was only one dog there so we could use the most Valentines possible, since people worked so hard to make them for us. The valentines are beautiful! People which include so many students have put so much work and thought into them.

Also, we had two stuffing parties this weekend, and over 50 local people showed up to help stuff Valentines, which was an amazing turnout and show of support from our local community.”

Dogs Deserve Better is also having a special Valentines fundraising promotion: Love is…a Day Without Chains, has artwork for sale by Tammy Grimes, and specialty items from Gabriel’s Aunt All Natural Candles – where you can get your special someone something special and help out animals in need!

You can check it out at: http://www.dogsdeservebetter.com/Valentines2007.html

There is still time for DDB to get valentines out. Remember If the sweet dogs receive a valentine in February it will still demonstrate the love. You can still email addressses of chained or penned dogs in your area to info@dogsdeservebetter.com

Chained dogs everywhere are counting on us to be their voice. Please see Tammy Grimes pictured with a once-chained dog who now lives without chains.

Original Story Jan 4, 2007

Join Dogs Deserve Better February 7-14th for Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week. OUR GOAL in our 5th Season is to SEND OUT 8000 VALENTINES TO CHAINED or PENNED DOGS.

Best Friends Animal Society is the proud sponsor for this year's campaign which will help create awareness and build relationships on behalf of chained dogs everywhere.

Dogs Deserve Better is striving to raise awareness for chained and penned dogs in a positive way...by delivering Valentines, a brochure and a treat coupon to dogs living outside all over the U.S. and into other countries where we have representation, such as Canada and Australia.

Here's what we need:

1. Make Valentines Teachers, Students, Scout Leaders, Group Leaders, Individuals please make Valentines! To see what others have done, visit our website.

The valentines can say anything along the lines of 'Bring us into the home and family.'

Please send them in by February 5th to P.O. Box 23, Tipton, PA 16684.

2. Mail Coupons for Free Treats This year we’d like to receive coupons for free or low cost treats to mail to the dogs...if you have any, please mail them to us.

3. Send Addresses for Chained or Penned Dogs This is so needed! To make our goal, we need to mail at least 8000 Valentines.

Send address via mail, call 877.636.1408 to report addresses, or e-mail them to info@dogsdeservebetter.org. You remain anonymous!

4. Sponsor Valentines The cost of this campaign is quite high, due to material and mailing fees, but it is well-worth it! You may either sponsor Valentines for addresses you provide, or sponsor Valentines for others who provide us with addresses.

In 2006 we delivered over 4500 Valentines to chained or penned dogs. Tammy S. Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, states, “We were thrilled in 2006 to see an incredible response to our plea. Some students were so motivated that they actually made multiple cards!

By participating in this program, many of the children felt like they were helping others instead of always being on the receiving end. This helped tremendously to boost their self-esteem. The students and groups gain a sense of accomplishment from creating for the dogs, and our hope is that more and more dog caretakers are educated as a result of the children’s efforts.”

Valentines and coupons are needed at the Dogs Deserve Better headquarters in Tipton, PA.

E-mail info@dogsdeservebetter.org, or call 814.941.7447 for more.

If you sponsor a Valentine for a Chained or Penned Dog during this time, we will do one of two things: Mail a valentine, brochure and treat coupon out to a chained or penned dog of your choice, please provide the address in the message area; or, mail and/or hand deliver to another dog who needs a Valentine and treats.

We would also be thrilled to have volunteers in other areas who would deliver some to chained dogs.

All valentines will be sent anonymously, unless you specifically ask for your first or full name to be included. And any information that is sent out with the valentine will include only the name of the Dogs Deserve Better organization. Therefore, any information you give us is strictly confidential, unless you direct otherwise.

I pet sit for a friend quite often and from his upstairs bedroom window I can see into his neighbors backyards. One neighbor, I noticed, had a large dog tied to a tree with several over turned food/water bowls scattered out of his reach. This infuriated me, so I downloaded one of the "dogs deserve better" flyers and sent it to her address along with a personal note offering to walk her dog for her free of charge during the day if she wished and gave her my email address. The only response I received from her was her demand to know how I knew her dog was tied up in the backyard. Since I was pet sitting for a month, I was able to keep track of the outcome after she received my flyer. Several days went by and the dog reamined on a chain with no food or water. I then contacted the Houston SPCA about the situation and a few days later, they obviously visited the location, because I saw the dog off the chain and a bowl of food/water on the patio. I felt better about the situation. A few months later, I pet sat for my friend again and looked out the upstairs window to check on the neighbor dog. I was disappointed to see that he was once again tied to a tree and this time, his chain was wrapped around the tree so short that he was unable to reach his dog house or the food/water bowls. I contacted SPCA a second time and a few days later, the dog was off chain again! That was about 6 months ago and I am sitting for my friend again this week and I checked on the neighbor dog from his upstairs window and am pleased to report that this dog is STILL off chain!

One person might not always be able to make a difference, but as a team, we can bring about changes to better animals lives.....one backyard at a time.

The second grade class I was working with loved making the Valentines and all had stories to tell! It was a great project to do with children and really brought an emphasis to the character trait they were learning about -compassion.

Between two different schools and three classrooms, I was able to send close to 75 cards. You just have to love what kids write.
Here are some examples:
"Animals are special because they have a family just like us."
"Puppys need love. And big dogs need love to."
"I love dogs. Dogs are pretty and so sweet. My dog will not bite me."
"Play with a dog. Feed a dog. Love a dog."
"Happy Valentines. Dogs need family and love to."
"Puppies have red noses. They are sweet. We should care for them because they are nice."

My favorite one is:
"Dogs need atinton."

These kids seem to get it, lets hope the recipients get it too.

My 2 daughters and I heard about this campaign a few weeks ago and got to work, between the 3 of us we made 140 valentines and sent them on there way. I am so glad to see support of this issue from all over. Utah does not have chaining laws or weight restriction on the chains, I am hoping through awareness such as this there will come a time when this changes.
It would be nice to get an update when this month is over. thanks for including us in this.

Well, I will check on that. What DDB really needs are addresses of the chained or penned dogs. If you have anytime this weekend to gather some in your area, that would be so appreciated. You can email to info@dogsdeservebetter.com

I live in Arizona and many of the dogs that are chained here are in the low income and/or Hispanic communities. Are cards being made or the attached info bilingual so that the cards don't get tossed because someone doesn't know what it says?

About 35 Valentines cards came home in my son's backpack today! How could I have missed the Valentine's party at my sons school? It's still January. Then I realized that some of the cards read: Happy Dog Day.

Several weeks ago, I mentioned to my sons teacher, the Have A Heart for Chained Dogs campaign and asked if some of the kids could make cards. I sent copies of The Animal World newspaper which included an article about Dogs Deserve Better to school too. It worked. DDB will be receiving 35 cards made by the kids in grades K through 5th from Ms. Fultz students at Farmington Elementary in Tennessee.

My nephew attends a grade school in the Memphis City School System. I contacted the Principal and told her about the campaign too. Again, I sent The Animal World as back up, and I received a call today that there are cards waiting for me to pick up.

So lots of cool cards will be coming your way soon!

How fun to read this story, scroll down and see that someone has used a photo of my buddy, Seven, for their Valentine! (He's on the red card in the last photo.) This weekend is his first anniversary with us, so how cool is that!?! Seven survived Hurricane Katrina (with 7 broken bones) and has such a big heart, it's only appropriate that he is someone's Valentine! :0) Dawn

What a wonderful campaign. I'm going to pass it on to my childrens' teachers and volunteer to bring in the supplies. The kids will love the activity and can feel proud that they are helping.

This is a wonderful campaign and Dogs Deserve Better is a great organization. Awareness and empathy are essential for a healthy society and It is never to early to bring either into a childs life. Children are naturally sensitive to the difficulties that animals face. Allowing a child to know about the plight of chained dogs and giving them an opportunity to make a difference is an invaluable experience.

Tammy Grimes, founder of DDB, started this campaign to help chained dogs.... by having the young people/students being involved. The young people have shown they can communicate the message in remarkable and heart touching ways that adults cannot.

What this campaign is doing for the chained dogs and communities is amazing. Please urge educators and schools in your state (there is a state-by-state participation breakdown of previous year) to become involved so this can be the best year yet. There is a true awareness and energy that is building and growing for the chained dogs. Let's keep the momentum growing!
